I meant Maypearl,TX,not Maypeal,TX . Mary Goats and James Bluff Goats lived in Maypearl,TX. I believe Mary Goats to be Mary Stephenson age 18 in 1850 and from the photo copy of an old message by Hattie May Smith Auburn Cemetery in Maypearl Goats Mary 09/15/1833 04/01/1906 Goats J.B. 04/26/1826 05/27/1902 Goats Ross 1876 1907 Goats Lillie 1881 1948 1850 US Census for District 9, Giles, TN Samuel Stephenson, 53, 1797, SC Mary Stephenson, 53, 1797, SC Mary Stephenson, daughter, 18, AL John Stephenson, son, 16, AL Silvester B Stephenson, son, 13, AL
I wish my Sylvester Brown Stephenson had stayed in Limestone Co,Al,so I could read his Civil War experiences. Sylvester Brown Stephenson is on the 1850 census of Giles Co,TN,son of Samuel Stephenson b. 1796 in York Co,S.C. and Mary Shields. He married Mary Holt in Limestone Co,Alabama in 1857. In 1861, He joined Captain John James Ward's Alabama Battery of Light Artillery in Huntsville,Alabama. It served with the Army of Mississippi until the summer of '64 when it was assigned to George S. Storr's Battery in the Army of Tennessee and took part in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign and the Battle of Kennessaw Mountain. I could only imagine what he went through until I discovered this website on George S. Storr which includes his almost day-to-day correspondence as the army moved through Georgia. http://www.aug.edu/~liblsc/Grant/Storrs/Storrs_description.html John James Ward, mayor of Huntsville, was mortally wounded in 1864 and Ward's Battery was captured at the Battle of Selma in 1865. Sylvester seems to have escaped to fight to the end. Sylvester Brown Stephenson joined Camp Winnie Davis in Waxahachie,TX, Ellis Co. His application for the Southern Cross is at the Giles Co,TN website as well as his picture. He died in the home of his daughter Rosa Stephenson in 1908. She had married William Herschel Smith b. 1860 in Giles Co,TN,son of Charles D. Smith and Julia McCracken. Sylvester B. Stephenson is buried in an unmarked grave in the Waxahachie,TX Cemetery. The daughter of Rosa Stephenson and W.H. Smith,Hattie May Smith 1918-1980, wrote on a sheet of paper that Sylvester had a brother Harvey and a sister Mary Stephenson Goats. There is a Mary Goats, wife of James Bluff Goats buried in the Auburn Cemetery in Maypeal,TX,Ellis Co. I believe James Bluff Goats was from Giles Co,TN. Sylvester Brown Stephenson was probably born in Limestone Co,Al in 1837 as his brother George Alexander Stephenson was born in Limestone in 1822. George Alexander Stephenson married Elizabeth Perry in Giles in 1849. I hope Sylvester got his Southern Cross. From what I have read he earned it.

My descent is through the Lindsey and Davis lines, but the name Holland has been used in various branches of my Lindsey line for at least 4 generations now, including Holland Lindsey, Bazel Holland Lindsey, James Holland Lindsey. We believe Holland Lindsey may have been born in Giles County (in 1807) before his father Micajah C Lindsey moved on to north Alabama and later Mississippi. Micajah and his wife Elizabeth McClurkin were in Rutherford County North Carolina, Spartanburg County South Carolina and probably Christian County Kentucky before moving to middle Tennessee for a few years before and after 1810.

I am a descendant of John William Hargrove and Jeronia Elmira Holland (twin to your Sophronia). From their line I go with John William and Louemma J. Davis. My grandfather was born to them in Pulaski, Giles County, TN Dec. 23, 1888, but they had moved to Ellis County, Texas by 1900 as they show up on the census there. I know that John William(#1) died in TN sometime after 1872, as he is not on the 1880 census with Jeronia and the children. Tillman was 2 on that census. From there I lose Jeronia - have some info on Robert Lafayette and Henry, but nothing on Thomas C., Josephene, and Tillman. Also does anyone have anything on a Marcella Hargrove - father Louis - probably born ca. 1910. They were supposed to have a farm near Windom, Fannin County, TX in 1936 that was being "looked after" by younger brother, Frank, who was @20 years. She married an Odell ? and they had a two year old boy in 1936. My e-mail is! [email protected] I would appreciate anything you have on anyone. Betty
Ginny, I saw your previous post about the above surnames. I am stuck on these 2. I have a Phoebe Webb living in the household of my GGG Grandmother Mary Kennedy in the 1850 census. Phoebe is 94 years old at the time. I have been told that she is the wife of Morris Webb and that she is somehow related to Elizabeth the wife of Mary's brother John. Do you know who she is? Also, I am looking for info on Martha Jane House, daughter of Green House (Houze) born abt. 1781. I have determined that they had children Martha Jane, Nicholas and Julia but don't know of any other children. Can you help on any of these? Julie

Hi list, I'm interested in learning more about the Butler family, specifically, Samuel Warring and Mary Emely (Keeling) Butler. I have not yet found Samuel in the 1860 Giles (or any other) census. He did not marry Mary Emely Keeling until 1865, so would not be with her, but he is also not with his parents, Henry T. and Amusedora (McNairy) Butler. Samuel was b. 25 Dec., 1839, so he could have been off on his own by 1860, but where? Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. Greg Keeling Manchester, TN
