    3. Ruth, I'm sorry that I have no information on any of the individuals you named. What I have on Garrett and Brownlow is copied from the Ancestry Chart below compiled by Beth Nannie Minatra(e) Bryan who wrote a number of letters to Giles County TN individuals as well as to the Giles Co Hist Soc and Old Records Dept in Pulaski during the 1980s. I am fortunate to have recently received copies of some letters, charts and notes that she wrote to members of the local Giles Co TN Minatra family. One very informative marginal note Mrs. Bryan wrote beside the name of her grandfather James David Minatre helped me greatly in setting the timeframe for their migration from Giles Co TN to Ellis Co TX. I quote exactly as written by Mrs. Bryan, "His sister Josephine & his Garrett brother-in-law & came to Ellis Co., Tx. ca 1881-84. Also a 3rd wagon - his bro. Bob (Robert) & wife Matt _?_" At this point I'm not sure if other family members joined the Garrett brother-in-law, or if there was a second wagon of kin from Giles Co. (who should have been named after the second "&" in her note). In my records I have a more complete list of descendants than I've included here. I would like to continue our discussion privately if you are agreeable. Direct Line from Andrew Jackson Minatree (1828) to Beth Nannie Minatre Bryan (1910) Generation No. 1 1. ANDREW JACKSON MINATREE (DAVID MENETREE)was born 06 May 1828 in Bunker Hill, Giles Co. TN, and died 13 May 1912 in Crescent Valley, Victoria Co, TX. He married MARY ABIGALE CLARK 16 Dec 1855. 1. RE: [TNGILES] Dunnavants, Garrett, Brownlow, Minatree, Clark - Giles Co, TN to Texas
    2. I'd very much like to compare the data I've collected with information you have. In particular, I'm interested in seeing records compiled on descendants of MayDay Dunnavant and George Hastings. MayDay's descendants, who have seen her Bible claim her name was spelled Maida not MayDay. They say that Maida was pronounced "Maidee". That whenever she told anyone her name was Maidee, the person receiving that information (census taker, family historian, etc.) would generally spell her name MayDay. Maida (or MayDay as her name is now most commonly spelled) was the great-granddaughter of Peter Dunnavant and Mary Marriott Mitchell. I can't begin to tell you how many hours I've spent trying to identify and locate descendants of George and Maida. Living descendants are estranged and not particularly interested in getting to know their cousins. Most can not even recall the names of their first cousins, much less those removed by more than one generation. Some of George and Maida's g-grandchildren did not even know the names of their grandparents much less great-grandparents. All did know that most of their grandparents and perhaps g-grandparents were buried in a cemetery at Wiley, Dallas Co., TX. Most could only recall being to the cemetery once or twice in their lives. I am a descendant of Able Burton Dunnavant and Sarah Marriott Mitchell through their oldest child, Elizabeth "Betsy" who married Ezekiel "Gid" Hastings. Expanding on research initially compiled by Loraine Story, I have compiled an extensive documented record on Ezekiel and Betsy's descendants. Expanding upon research initially compiled by Nellie Smith, I've collected an extensive documented record Able's daughter, Sarah Ann "Sallie" Dunnavant who married Joseph "Joe" Hastings. Intermarriages between descendants of both girls have not been uncommon. Intermarriages between descendants of both girls with descendants of Able Burton Dunnavant's siblings have not been uncommon; -- as evidenced by marriage between MayDay and George. Some information found in their records has been either disproved or changed simply because there are records available to me that were not readily available to either Loraine or Nellie. Having their records certainly made my research efforts much easier. It will be interesting to compare the data you have with the data I've collected, especially pertaining to MayDay and George. Ruth P.S. Some of MayDay and George's descendants lived in the east Texas areas affected by Hurricane Rita's flooding. -----Original Message----- From: Leland or Nancy Carter [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 6:48 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNGILES] Dunnavants, Garrett, Brownlow, Minatree, Clark - Giles Co, TN to Texas My messages to this post keep bouncing back. The Tennessee State Library and Archives has state-wide birth records for the years 1908-1912. Instructions & forms for ordering a search of these birth records can be found in Genealogical Services Available by Mail - State Records. TSLA does NOT accept e-mail or telephone request to search the 1908-1912 birth records. State-wide birth records for the years 1914-2004 are held by the Office of Vital Records, Tennessee Department of Health. CITY BIRTH RECORDS The four larger cities in Tennessee -- Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Memphis -- did keep earlier birth records for their specific communities. In most cases, the records cover the cities themselves and do not include suburbs or other communities in the county. The Tennessee State Library and Archives has copies of the early city birth records for Nashville (1881-1907), Knoxville (1881-1907), Chattanooga (1879-1907), and Memphis (1874-1883). Instructions & forms for ordering a search of these birth records can be found in Genealogical Services Available by Mail - State Records. DELAYED BIRTH RECORDS When the Social Security Administration was created in 1935, the agency asked for birth certificates as proof the applicant qualified for entry into the program. Most Tennesseans who wished to apply, however, were born prior to the 1908 law that first required the keeping of birth certificates. Beginning in 1935, Tennessee began to issue Delayed Birth Certificates. These certificates were not issued automatically; the applicant had to request the record from the state, and must supply supporting documents or letters. The Tennessee State Library and Archives has copies of the Delayed Birth Certificates for the birth years 1869-1899. TSLA will accept e-mail requests to search the index to the Delayed Birth Certificates. Please include the name of the individual, an approximate date or year of birth, the county of birth (if known), and (if known) the name of the mother. We also ask that you include your name, city and state with your request. TSLA will accept only one request at a time to search for a single record; once you receive a response to your request, you may send in your next request, and so on. TSLA tries to respond to e-mail requests in ten working days. Delayed Birth Certificates for the birth years 1900 on are held by the Office of Vital Records, Tennessee Department of Health. The records at the Tennessee State Library and Archives are open to the public. You are welcome to come in 8am-6pm Monday through Saturday to search the birth records yourself & make your own copies for research. Please see the TSLA Visitors Page for information on directions, parking, and holiday hours.

(3) Kincaid moves her & children to CA & settles near to her mother & sibling families. (4) Mary's death is at about the same time as we find a [new ] grandson listed in the household of Polly's mother in the 1860 census. If this Mary is "my" Polly she was born 1819 and would have been 27-28 when she married WJ Kincaid, who was born in 1831 so was 16-17 at his marriage to Mary. Going on that basis, Mary most likely have been married before & brought a son to this marriage. This would be Ed Chappell, old enough to leave home, & join up with his maternal grandmother's family, when [his mother?] Mary died. 3. Greetings List Members, This came in to me as a non-subscriber message: -------- Original Message -------- Subject: {not a subscriber} Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 13:02:58 -0600 From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] I do not have much information but I will share .William James Dunavant was born in Mecklenburg Va.in1820,his parents were Peter Dunnavant and Mary Mitchell. You can find the family in Giles co. on the 1850 census. William had eight siblings: Jane W. (born in 1823 at Mecklenburg,Va. married James Milton Brownlow) Benjamin M.(my gr.gr.grandfather born in 1824.) Caroline (born in 1829 at Mecklenburg Va. married Henry Yant), Robert Burton(born 1830 in Tenn.), Albert Archer (born in 1834 in Giles Co and died in 1911 in Harmon Co., Ok.), Peter H. (born in 1838 in Giles), George F. (born in 1840 in Giles) Mary R. (born in 1842 in Giles; Married Daniel Nipp in 1860) One can assume that the family left Va. in 1829 since Robert was born in April of 1830. For some reason most of the brothers and sisters had left Giles Co. by 1870. Some went to Ok., Texas and others moved to other counties in Tenn (Dyer and Lauderdale). Hopefully this little bit of information will help you in your search. Do you know if William James and Narcissa moved to Texas? Where did James Milton and Jane W. settle in Texas?
