I hate to tell you this, but Gibson Co. didn't exist in 1799. If I remember right, the area didn't open up for settlement until 1823. If your family were early settlers in Gibson Co., they may be listed in Goodspeeds History (published in the 1800s), and I believe a copy is on the Gibson Co. TN Genweb page. And also listed in some of the other Gibson Co. family history books. How do you fit into the Matthews family? We're trying to find parents of Samuel S. MATHIS, b. 1801 in NC. He was in Wilson Co. TN when he married in 1822, Cannon Co., TN in 1850, and Gibson Co., TN by 1853 when his son was named as guardian of his minor children.
