There is an index to deaths at the TN archives. If I remember right, it covers one year at a time. You can check yourself and try different spellings of the surname. We found a relative in the index, after Vital Statistics couldn't find his death certificate. If you have a date of death, you can look for an obituary in the newspaper. It's also possible that the cemetery office will have more information than is found on a tombstone.
