    1. [TNGIBSON-L] Transcribing an old Letter
    2. Eddy G. Clark
    3. Hello Everyone, I'm transcribing an old letter I scanned in from Joe Bone of Rutherford. It was written in 1854 and I have scanned in two pages that I'd like to send someone to review and see if I made any mistakes or would just like to try their hand at reading this 1850 handwriting. The letter is one two pages and so far I managed to transcribe the following: April 16th 1854 Dear Daughter I receved your letter of 14th March a few days since and have now set down to try and write you an answer to it but am not sure that I can accomplish it - owing to pains and cramps in my fin -gers it is with great difficulty I can write at all even when I enjoy my but health, but at this time I feel almost too unwill to attempt writing --- I had become very un??? to hear from you and your children, but was glad when I received your letter [to ????] that you were all will at that time --- you inform me that you are still living in Yorkville and will continue there this year having rented out a part of your farm and hired a hand to attend the balance -- You solicit my opinion as to the plan you have p????? thus far and my advice as to what you had better do after this year -- as you were so con??? and discon??? I am not prepared to say that I much disapprove of the course you have persued this far -- but for the future if can still be reconarted? I think it would be much but (better) for you to be at your own Land and home, was you able to have you Ja??? carryed on -- I have learned that one objection you have to living at York ??? home is the Rail road passing through your land -- I must confess that with me that is a pritty strang objection especially in your lonely situation, the damage done to the stode? of those living immoriality on the road is considerable and its vexatious - but your arragments ?? made for tho ??? -sent year, remain as you are and at the close of it perhaps you can better know what caurse will be smart prudent [to persue] - your land is daily advancing value as the railroad progresses, and I am informed you are authorized by Doctor Bones will to sell the land at any time you may feel disposed to do so I have thought that owing to the great advance on the price [of] land ????? di?t?ly on the road that it might be will when it is about as near to be finished for you to sell your land and with proceeds of it you could settle [yourself] in a more ?etired place comfortably and still have part of the price of your land to answer other ?????? -- this is the view I now take of the case after considerable reflection - I am told your land is of excellent quality and in one or two years from this time will sell for a very high price --- I would be pretty grateful to go and see you and your chil =dren but do not suppose that I will even be able to go that distance riding on horseback very much aggravates the disease that I am so much afflicted with (I mean the grav??) and it is continually growing worse, I am part loosing the action or use of any limbs, I have enjoyed very little health since last fall, I have come to see the days I have but little pleasure in, I have found this in???? a world of trouble and did I fool? myself fully and in???? and without any doubt prepared for that good world [would] gladly make the exchange --- Eliza and me are still living here by ourselves, no company but the black people - Eliza has a bad cold and cough for ???? time but it is getting better --- Rhoda appears to have lost her health at most intirely, she is scarcly able to do any Thing I dont calculate on [her] living long - You heard of Patcerios? death last year. Bob is also failing fast - the rest of the Negroes are enjoyin good health I had a letter from Lucius some two months ago, he is married and in good health - Lass ??? and her family were in common health two week ago -- go? and his family were well yesterday evening I heard from them - I am fatiqued and must close I bid you and your children favorable - Write to me again as soon ... Anyone wishing to try and crack the unknowns (anyplace with a ??? next to it), please let me know. I can send the entire image or just parts of it. Take care everyone, Eddy G. Clark
