    3. Now, maybe this will help some of you youngsters to know more fully about the life of a poor country boy. Red Anthony and I have been carry on about gathering corn. He thought I should tell the younger generation what we mean by gathering, since some of you wrote him. My description applies to we old timers not the up date city farmers of today, who have an air condition cab to ride in, with music, and two way radios. L O L Gathering corn was done in the following manner. A team and wagon went to the field and would gather five rows at a time, a man on each side gathered two rows each, of course the wagon knocked down a row, this was known as the down row. Most of the time a youngster was assigned to this task. A back breaking job. Take it from one who knows. Now we gather corn and picked cotton. In the old days you had a long sack (Cotton sack) that you drug. You could some times get 75 pounds in that sack. Then you had to throw it over your shoulders and head for the scales, here it was weighed, get a drink of warm water, empty sack and hurry back to the patch and try to catch up. Now, that is if you were getting paid to pick it. I hope this will help you appreciate the way the farmers have it made today. Now you city slickers don't get the idea farming is easy for it isn't.
