My ggg grandfather died on February 25, 1873. On the tombstone it says that he was 33 years 10 months and 18 days of age. How do you figure his exact birthdate. I know there is some kind of formula to use, but I don't know what it is. I would appreciate your help. I do not know exactly where the 3rd district is located. Is it in the northeastern section of Gibson? Earleen
I want to make it clear that I'm not offering "look-ups." There's no way that I can do that at this time. What I have is a digitized copy of the 1900 Gibson County census. My family was in District 17 and I'm concentrating on that area for right now. The digitized images are pretty difficult to work with (I'm probably not doing it right). Some of the pages are smudged in the lower left-hand corner - actually, it's more like ink blots - and are unreadable. (As fate would have it - my family seems to always end up in the lower left-hand corner.) Some pages are almost too faint to read. I think that, by using existing cemetery records (provided by our wonderful volunteers) and marriage records (bless Emily Walker) I might be able to figure out who most of the citizens are. So, if you think your family may have been in District 17 (North Gibson / Skullbone?) in 1900, send me their names and any information. I'll tack the information up next to the pc. As I find them, I'll send you a message with what I've found? If you all like, I'll post to the list. I plan to also ask for help from the list, so if you see a message that asks a question like: "29-29 Lan**y, Robert * Nephew in the home of Mary E Marshall" - this could be your ancestor. Karla
If anyone needs a northeastern Gibson Co. Cemetery Lookup, I will try my best to do it. If you want dates, burials around them, or even epitaphs, I will pull out the old chalk and try to read it for you. Adam PS. Well folks, I have finished my final draft of my new book. Now my editor, my wife, can take over. It is 209 pages full of documentation for both Wilson and Rutherford Counties as well as much as I have from Virginia. It is fully indexed for both individuals as well as locations. Most of the information comes from the Bradley Creek and Milton area of Rutherford County and Fall Creed in Wilson County. In a couple of months, I will be starting the second installment which will take me to Gibson County, Tennessee, Logan County, Arkansas, Lawrence County, Arkansas and Boulder County, Colorado. For those who don't know, the lines that I am researching are BOTTOMS, KEAS, ELROD, CROUSE and JORDAN Harvey
Can someone tell me where Halifax county is? Has it ever been relocated by jurisdictional changes? Stan
I would like to have a Marriage Lookup of James or Walter Caldwell to Annie or Ida Parish.I really do appreciate the lookup. Thanks in advance. Alice CALDWELL RUSHING MZ
Ruby, The Cemetery Records of Gibson Co. compiled by Emily B. Walker lists this inscription for Flowers Chapel Cemetery: Johnson, P. G., Eld. September 10, 1840 - July 22, 1905 Joined the Primitive Baptist Church by experience and Baptism June 18, 1871, Ordained to the ministry June 1, 1872 which office he filled faithfully till death. There is a marriage on record in Gibson Co., Tennessee for a P. G. Johnson to Mary A. Williamson on October 5, 1862. Whether this is your Pleasant Greenberry Johnson or not, I do not know, but it gives you an avenue to explore. Good luck in your search. Alice King
You didn't indicate the date on the letter, or the date of the postmark on the letter. With that date, assuming the letter says that he just died recently, that gives you a good approximation of the date of death so you can look for an obituary in the newspaper. You can find out the name of the nearest newspaper at your local library, in a book published about 1935. Ask your reference librarian for help. That book also lists who has copies of the newspaper. You can borrow microfilm copies of the newspapers on interlibrary loan at your local library. Greenfield, TN appears to be across the south fork of the Obion River in Weakley Co., TN. If you want to know who signed permission for her (Nettie Johnson) to marry, you'll need to write to the Weakley Co., TN courthouse and ask. Most likely it was her father, so that wouldn't give you the name of her mother. Another source for the name of her mother is Nettie Johnson's death certificate. But it might not be accurate and it might say unknown. If Nettie Johnson was married at age 14 in 1878 in Greenfield, TN, then she was born in 1864. Her mother should be listed with the family in the 1870 census, and her parents were probably married in the early 1860's, if she was the oldest child. You say her father was Pleasant Greenberry Johnson and he was born in TN. You can find his birth date (Month and Year) in the 1900 census, and it also tells the birth place (State) of his parents and the number of years he has been married, which will give you the year of his second marriage, and the latest date that his first wife died (assuming they weren't divorced). The family should be listed in the 1880 soundex, because it's unlikely that all of those children you listed could be born by 1870. (The 1880 soundex lists only those families with children under the age of 10.) That (or the 1870 census) would give you birth years for all of the children, and a better estimate of when they married. And the first name of their mother. And maybe some of her relatives were living with the family, which would give you some more clues. The father should be listed with his parents in the 1850 and 1860 census. There is an index for those censuses in TN with all household members listed, so you can find out the names of his parents just by looking in the index. You'll have to go through all of the Johnsons, though, because it's ordered by the name of the head of household. If you want someone to look up the marriage(s) of your ggf, then a message like this would be more efficient: Subj: Marriage Lookup of Pleasant Greenberry Johnson please Pleasant Greenberry Johnson married 1st wife about 1860 perhaps in Weakley Co., TN. Need name of 1st wife and date of marriage. 2nd wife was Mattie, and they were married about (get year from 1900 census). Need wife's full name and date of marriage.
