Hello All, Being new to this particular list, I thought I would sort of introduce myself. My name is Pamela HOLMES Serda, and I'm researching my fathers family. My gg-grandfather, William F. HOLMES, was born 1836 in TN. I don't know where at in TN. I have located a particular HOLMES family on the Gibson Co., Dist. 08 census, that is very interesting, to say the least. There are a lot of similarities, etc. I'm trying to determine if this family would be the parents of my gg-grandfather. He showed up in Texas in 1857, at the age of 21, married in 1858, remained in TX, and joined the army in 1862. After returning from the war, he remained in TX. All of the documents I can locate, state that he was definitely born in TN, but do not state which county, or names of parents. As far as I know, he had no family prior to coming to TX. If anyone has any info, especially about the family I mentioned, any insight would be most appreciated. 1850 Gibson Co., Dist. 08 census: house # 1371, line #4 thru 14, page. #223a Robert HOLMES, 42 M Tailor, born in GA Polly " , 36 F born in AL James " , 18 M Farmer, born in TN Robert " , 17 M born in TN William " , 14 M born in TN Martha " , 12 F born in TN Nancy " , 08 F born in TN Sarah " , 06 F born in TN Jennimin (sp?) All of the names in this family, have also been repeated numerous times in my HOLMES family line. Milton suggested yesterday that I send all new queries posted on the GenConnect boards to the list. Barry Crocker now has the following surnames divided by cemetery: BROWNING CARR CRIBBS CROCKER HOLMES LEACH MCCARTNEY Swindell/Swindle WILLIAMS WILSON http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/cemeteries/cemeterySurnames.htm A big thank you to Barry! Vicki
I have been transcribing an old newspaper found in a trunk of my grgrandfather's recently. Gainesville was one of the entry points to Texas. So if your ancestor moved from Gibson Co. TN to Texas you might take a look. And bookmark it because I'm not even half done! There are lots of names here besides being a hoot to read! http://www.rootsweb.com/~txclay/GainesvilleRegister/GainesvilleRegister1.htm BTW, so far it's the only one in existence and my grgrandfather saved it! Vicki
There are two new photos posted on the "Who is it" photo page. If you haven't looked at the page recently, you might take a look and see if you can help out these folks! I know we all have photos that are unknown to us. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/who.htm Barry Crocker has also added the surnames Williams to his cemetery surname page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/cemeteries/cemeterySurnames.htm Vicki
The GRADDY family that ended up in Gibson Co., TN is from Duplin Co., NC and Hopkins Co., KY. I noticed this on the Duplin Co., NC Genweb page and saw some familiar surnames. If you haven't figured out where your ancestors came from, you might check out Duplin Co., NC. NEW--KORNEGAY and related families--1930's Article by A. T. Barry Crocker has been working hard and putting together pages for our site where some surnames are separated out by cemeteries. So far he has CARR, CRIBS, CROCKER, McCARTNEY & WILSON. Check it out at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/cemeteries/cemeterySurnames.htm Many thanks to Barry! Vicki
The Knox County TNGenWeb site is pleased to announce a new link to a real mystery. Visit http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/knoxphoto/mystalbum/ This photo album was recently discovered among the rubble of an old house in East Knox County, Tennessee. The album, dated 1866, is filled with photos, names, and genealogical tidbits. Sadly, most of the identified photo slots are empty, and most of the existing photos are unidentified! Many photos are from the 1860-1875 period. Here's a list of surnames and locations from both the album pages and the photos. Please check this page and see if you can help us identify anyone.... Our goal is to reunite photos of Gramma, Grampa, and everyone's favorite aunt with their proper descendants -- who can provide documentation of relationship and show genuine interest in their preservation. Ever wonder why so many of our ancestors used the name "Lafayette" as a name for their children? Here's why: ======================================== LAFAYETTE, THE MARQUIS DE (1757-1834) The Marquis de Lafayette was a French soldier and statesman who aided our country in its fight for independence. He was also a prominent leader in the early stages of the French Revolution. Lafayette's liberal ideas cost him his fortune and his social position, but his bold actions in support of his beliefs won him the respect of Americans and French alike. During the Revolutionary War, Lafayette served without pay, joining the staff of General George Washington. After the war, he made two trips to the U.S. in 1784 and 1824. During the second visit, he came to Nashville in 1825 where he was met by a crowd of thousands, including Revolutionary War veterans from all over the state. A dinner and ball were held in his honor and he went to The Hermitage to spend a day with Andrew Jackson. taken from web page at http://www.nashv.lib.tn.us/who.html
Good Morning All, I have been working on extracting names of my relatives that are buried in Gibson Co. from the transcriptions of cemetery's posted on the Gibson Co. web site. I am doing this for two reasons; (1) to make it easier for my own research and (2) to provide a small service to others that are researching the same surnames. At this time I have done the Crocker's (http://www.jps.net/bcrocker/crocker.html ) and McCartney's (http://www.jps.net/bcrocker/mccartney.html ) If anyone has information about the people listed or has additions I would please let me know. I will be updating those pages as more cemetery's are transcribed so check back often. Let me take this opportunity to say a special THANK YOU to all those folks that are working very hard to provide the cemetery readings. Since I live in California (The Peoples Republic Of) I could never get this valuable information without you. Y'all are great! Barry Crocker bcrocker@jps.net

Seen this posting on another surname list. This site was created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute and it is a searchable database of their Special Collections. Using this database you can see if a photograph exists of your Civil War ancestor. Just enter the surname you're searching and the results page will give any photos of any soldier with that surname, along with (if known) his regiment. Next, you can send an e-mail with the photo ID's that you're interested in. The Army will then send you (for free) a photocopy of the picture, along with instructions on ordering a duplicate photo. An 8x10 photo costs $10.00. No more then ten photos will be produced for any one customer per year. http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html God Bless, Angela Main Tree line Branches WATSON ROBINSON PERRY KIMBRO/UGH ANDREWS BINYON JACKSON MERRIMAN HISER DWYER SMILEY JOHNSON BOYD WEDDLE KINNINGHAM STEPHENS NALL

Vicki, I am sending this to you so that you can post the obituary to the items that I have extracted from the RUTHERFORD REGISTER, and I am sending a Cc to the list in the hopes of contacting some of his descendants who may be researching the Cooper family. When I researched in the BELLS CHAPEL CEMETERY, I noticed that his William Thomas Cooper's grave (listed in the cemetery transcription online as W. T. COOPER, April 24, 1859-) only had a birth date listed. Since W. T. Cooper is a brother of my grandmother, ELIZABETH FRANCIS (COOPER) BROWN FLOWERS NORMAN, (March 26, 1857-September 17, 1932), I was interested in finding a death date for him. I found it recently in an obituary for William T. Cooper in the issue of the RUTHERFORD REGISTER dated February 26, 1926. It reads as follows: OBITUARY WILLIAM T. COOPER was born April 24, 1859, departed this life December 7, (1925) aged 66 years, 8 days; was married to SARAH ALICE BROWN December 2, 1877; to this union 11 children and a number of grandchildren. Later he married Mrs. BESSIE HORNER March 21, 1918, to this union 4 children and 4 stepchildren. Whereas, God in His wisdom and providence saw fit to take from our midst our beloved Brother COOPER who has been so faithful a worker in our church and one whom we all loved for his Christian life in our church and community. He loved his pastor, Rev. Will Zaricor. He would talk so much of his good pastor. He loved him dearly. May his mantle fall on his children that they may be true as he was to the cause of Christ. Since the Angels took my father life has been sad and lonely, but I am trusting in the God he loved and some day I will meet him again. (At this point a poem is inserted, and then this paragraph follows:) Dear children I pray that the hand that led your dear father will lead each and every one of you to the beautiful gate and may father be first to meet you, and may you hear that welcome applause, enter into my joy, sit on my throne. This by one that knew Mr. COOPER well. He loved his neighbors, his church, his friends. May God bless every child he has. Written by Mrs. N. J. Thompson. Also buried in the BELLS CHAPEL CEMETERY are other members of W. T. COOPER's family, as follows: His mother, NANCY J. (SAIN) COOPER, May 1, 1839-July 8, 1903 His sister, ELIZABETH FRANCIS (COOPER) BROWN FLOWERS NORMAN, 1857-1932 His first wife, SARAH A. COOPER, Nov. 14, 1861--Dec. 30, 1902 His daughter, DELLA M. (COOPER) McCAGE-1878-1960 His daughter, JETTIE COOPER-February 16, 1881-April 17, 1901 His son, T. (Tebe) C. COOPER, 1885-1954 His daughter, KATE COOPER, 1887-1958 His son, BUFORD COOPER, 1894-1940 His son, ANDRUE B. COOPER, January 22, 1893-February 2, 1893 Other known children of W. T. COOPER and SARAH A. (BROWN) are: A son, JOHN T. COOPER, June 1889-1964, buried YORKVILLE CEMETERY A daughter, INA LEE COOPER, born April 1891 A daughter, ETTA COOPER, born March 1896 A daughter, MATTIE M. COOPER, born April 1899 A son, MYRT H. COOPER, born July 1883 WILLIAM T. COOPER'S father was JOSSIAH FLETCHER COOPER, March 18, 1828-April 10, 1885, buried NORTH UNION CEMETERY JOSSIAH'S parents were THOMAS and ELIZA C. (WALTON) COOPER, both buried in YORKVILLE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY. If you are descended from and/or researching this family, I would like to hear from you.
