    1. [TNGIBSON] Re COX CHAPEL CHURCH CEMETERY
    2. Noticed posting of Cox Chapel Church Cemetery. Have been unable to find any information in connection with my great grandparents William D. SELPH and Mary LONG SELPH, or their children. William D. SELPH and Mary LONG SELPH were in the 1880 Gibson County TN census, Coxville Community, at age 72 and 68 respectively, which is the last record that have been able to find. Their son Sydney SELPH and wife Martha J. were in 1880 Census living next to William D. SELPH. A microfilm record on a single separate sheet of the Coxville Church indicates Sydney as a member and indicates his date of death as 5 April 1885 and Martha J. Selph date of death as 31 August 1882. Due to transportation constraints in the 1880's it is believed that William D., Mary L., Sydney and Martha J. Selph were all probably buried in the Cox Chapel Cemetery but have been unable to find any record or stones to verify. Any information as to where any records of the Cox Chapel Church membership, deaths, etc. during the 1880's might be found would be appreciated. Also if anyone has any knowledge or suggestion of where we might look for the graves of these ancestors we would appreciate the help. J. A.

    1. [TNGIBSON] 1830 Census & 1830 Sheriff's List of Residents
    2. Thomas W Davis
    3. Hello - First an expression of appreciation for all the effort that has been expended on making the Gibson County web site so outstanding. It's one of the best I've had the pleasure of using in my family research. Re the latter, can anyone give me the dates the 1830 census was taken in Gibson County? And, can anyone put a date to the Sheriff's List of Residents? Although a family I'm researching was not enumerated for the census, the family head is listed in the Sheriff's report. Thanks for any related information Tom Davis

    2. Joan Mendelson
    3. I am looking for the Birth certificate/info from said document on the GGrandfather of my children (Dad's side). All I have on him, is his name: JAKE MENDELSON, that he was born in MEMPHIS, TN around 1873. He apparently was a Truck Driver, was married to someone in or around Memphis & had 5 children (4 girls, DOROTHY-HELENE-RUTH-LORRAINE/1 boy, HARRY). Either divorced or a widow, went to Chicago, where he met a girl by the name of AMANDA PAPENFUSS, who was about 16 years his junior. They married and had 1 son, MARTIN GEORGE MENDELSON, b: 05 Feb 1909. Any info that can sent will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, pattimm@mindspring.com

    2. PATRICIA J MALONE
    3. Hi List Members, I was born and raised in and around Gibson, Gibson County, Tennessee. My parents, sisters and several other relatives still live in Gibson. I would like to know if any of you on the list might have old photos of the town of Gibson. The town has changed quite a bit over the years with several buildings being torn down. I'm especially interested in photos of Hales' store, the pack shed, the canning factory, depot, bank, drug store, appliance store, the blacksmith shops, the potato house, any of the 3 grocery stores of years ago, beauty shop, and Gibson High School (from which my husband and I graduated). I'm also interested in any information anyone has on the old Harrison Hotel in Milan, Tennessee. My great grandfather, Joseph Newton Wilson, worked at the hotel for quite some time. He was, in fact, tied to a tree behind the hotel and robbed during his employment there as a night watchman. I have my great grandfather's old desk obtained from the hotel when they remodeled and bought new furniture. I would appreciate any information at all concerning the hotel, etc. Thanks in advance. Pat

    1. Re: [TNGIBSON] John W. Williams/Daniel Williams/Sarah Wms Hudson
    2. Thomas W Davis
    3. Hello, Terri - Thanks for responding to my query. John and Daniel's parents were William and Crissy Williams. They and William's brothers, Jeremiah and Charles (and perhaps a James), arrived in Gibson County 1826/27/28, apparently from Alabama. The Alabama stay may have been from 1815/1816, as the children born between those years subsequently reported birth in Alabama, whereas a child born in 1814 reported birth in Tennessee. The family itself apparently came out of Orange County, North Carolina, a few years after the Revolution. The background is the following: Walter Thetford of Orange County left a 1767 will within which he referred to his son-in-law, William William, leaving the latter 200 acres on "Stony Creek". Other Thetford sons were Josiah, William and Simon. Third party deeds dated 1778 and 1779 mention that referenced land was bounded by that held by William Williams and Josiah Thetford. In the early 1780's the Thetford brothers left North Carolina, and moved first to So. Carolina, where Simon settled, followed by a move by Josiah and William to Georgia. About the same time (early 1780's) Wm Williams presumably moved to Kentucky, where my gg grandfather, Wm Williams was born in 1785. Unfortunately, I lose the family until Wm and his brothers arrive in Gibson County, ca 1826/28. However, their parents apparently had left Kentucky sometime before 1795, as one brother, Jeremiah, was born in that year, and subsequently reported his birthplace as Alabama, as did his younger brother, Charles, born in 1800. On the other hand, we know Alabama remained Indian territory until some years later. Because of this, I suspect the Williams' were in northwestern Georgia (near William and Josiah Thetford), rather than in what we today identify as Alabama. Back to the Thetfords - Simon, who had settled in South Carolina in the 1780's, moved to Kentucky in the early 1800's; as did the children of Josias after his death, ca 1810. The latter were the Thetfords who subsequently arrived in Gibson County, at the same time as my Williams'. Upon arrival, the two extended families settled side-by-side (15th census district), and remained in close association for the next couple of generations (thus the presumed link with the earlier N.C. Thetfords/Williams). Terri, I hope the above fits in with your own research, or perhaps that of other readers. Any information relating to Daniel or John, or their father, William, and his brothers certainly would be welcome. Tom
