Happy Thanksgiving to all. Researching: Yates, Bell, Lowrance, Bottoms, Jordan, Word, Crockett.
Ladies & Gentlemen, Another holiday season is upon us and I still do not know the name of my great-great grandmother. She married my great-great grandfather William H. "Sandy" Varner in 1867 or 1868, but not in Gibson County (no marriage recorded). (In the 1880 census, Sandy is listed as widowed and living with his sister, Sarah Marcum and her family.) Why didn't they marry in the county? Sandy was over 30 years old; was his wife too young or perhaps a different religion, maybe of Indian heritage? My great-great grandmother apparently died in childbirth causing Sandy and his father William Varner to sign guardianship papers for my great grandfather in 1869. These Varners arrived in the Laneview/Salem area in 1839-40 from Davidson County, NC. They sold the first plot of land to Salem Baptist Church, which is where the elder William and most of his family are buried. The last living Varner in the area was Odessa Varner (widow of Herbert Varner) who died in 1975, her mother-in-law was Ms. Tennie Varner who died in 1935, sister-in-law to Sandy. Other related lines are the Hastes and Fairless'. Cheryl (Varner) Walker Oklahoma City
