    1. [TNGIBSON] Thanks Re: 1850 Gibson Co census
    2. Thanks to all who responded to my (belated) question re DO in the occupation column of the 1850 census. Unanimously, the DO stands for "ditto" or "same as above." Karla

    1. [TNGIBSON] 1850 Gibson Census
    2. Dennis West
    3. Hi Gibson County: Another volunteer, Marie Kline, has transcribed the 1850 Gibson Co. census for the US GENWEB CENSUS project. If you thought your ancestors were in Gibson Co. in 1850, but could not find them on the transcription that the volunteers completed under the leadership of Vicki and Eddie, then check this one: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/census/tn/ Marie may have a better copy of the microfilm, or been able to interpret handwriting better in some cases, and you may find those missing names here. This will probably be linked on the Gibson Co. Archives page when it is next updated. Dennis West in Knoxville, TN.

    1. [TNGIBSON] Wilson and Court Records
    2. Cheryl Walker
    3. I know there are a couple of Wilson researchers out there who might find this interesting. It seems there was a J. W. Wilson who was brought up on charges more than once for selling whiskey either on election day or within 4 miles of a school! I found this on the circuit court records for 1882-1884. The most common crimes in Gibson County back then seemed to be larceny, whiskey violations, carrying a pistol, or disrupting a church service. My goal is to transcribe the indexes for the rolls I purchased so they can be posted to the Gibson web site. Then if there are lots of folks interested, we can discuss pooling our funds to get the microfilm transferred to CD-ROM. Sort of a try before you buy. It will take at least a month, though, considering I've been snowed in for 3 days now in beautiful Oklahoma Ski country. Here's an illustration of our slopes: ____________ Cheryl (Varner) Walker

Sexton were married in Gibson County TN in 1849. I am trying to locate Sarah J's Sexton family as well as the family members of William Henry Betts. The census states that he was born in NC. William and Sarah had the following children known to me, but there may have been more as there is a big gap between the youngest and the next born. Lodisa Jane (Dicey) b 1851 Gibson Co, TN, William Thomas, b. 1852, Albert Calvin, b 1853, Hardeman Co, TN, Joseph Eugene, b. 1860, Gibson Co, TN, Elizalla Anna, b 1861, Gibson Co, TN. and Samuel, b. 1867. After the Civil War Sarah J. Sexton Betts took her family and moved to Murphysboro, IL. There is no mention made of William Henry Betts in any of the records in IL. My grandmother, daughter of Lodisa Jane, said William H. died at the end of the War. Can find no proof. Why did she go to IL with a brood of kids? Must have had some relatives there? Any information greatly appreciated.
