Dustin, The boundaries are laid out by geographical features such as streams and rivers. I believe they were to encompass a geographical area with a certain number of folks in them. The communities lay as follows today; 1 *Medina,Sitka,Goat City 2 (district between Humboldt and Medina) 3 *Humboldt 4 Gibson Wells 5 Brazil 6 Central, Eaton 7 *Trenton, New Hope, Georgetown 8 *Yorkville, Neboville 9 *Rutherford 10 *Kenton 11 Laneview, Barrons Corner 12 Concorde, Moores Chapel, Vaughns Grove 13 *Milan, Cades, Graball, Sitka 14 *Bradford 15 Whiteway 16 Hickory Grove 17 Skullbone 18 *Gibson, New Enterprise 19 Walnut Grove 20 Edison, Fruitland 21 *Dyer 22 Idlewild 23 Goodluck, China Grove 24 Cool Springs 25 Frog Jump an * indicates an incorporated city As far as I can tell there are no maps at the courthouse that show the old civil districts. Hello everyone, I was at Mom's yesterday looking through some old photos and family treasures and found a Wednesday , November 4, 1936 edition of "The Daily Bulletin" Gibson County's only daily newspaper, published by The Herald-Democrat Publishing Co. Trenton, TN. Headline reads: Roosevelt Re-elected In Landslide Vote. Gibson County Goes Almost 6 to 1 for Pres. Roosevelt. Trenton Gives Roosevelt 495; Landon Only 75. > Hi Everyone, Just a note - if anyone is interested in all known copies of the Rutherford Register - they have been scanned in (very excellent detail) and are available on about 14 or 15 CDs. If you are interested in obtaining these valuable CDs, goto the website www.digital-antiquities.com and look for them there. I forgot the exact price of the CDs but I do know that the CDs are cheaper than the microfilm and its far easier to read. Just thought one or two of you would like to know. Take care everyone, Eddy G. Clark
Hello! Can anyone do a lookup for me in the 1880 census? I am looking for Samuel Parks. b. about 1807. I found him in the 1870 census in District 3. He was married to Mary ----, and had these children: Samuel, David, Benjamin F., and John. I'm also looking for Sam's son Samuel(he would be 28 in 1880). He was born in 1852 and married Katherine Elizabath ----. Their children were Ira Marvin and possibly Samuel. Thanks in advance! Jason Felton
-----Original Message----- From: Alice King <king@hcol.net> Subject: Rutherford Register Fellow Listers.... The Rutherford Register did begin publication in the 1880's but not all of those issues are available on microfilm. As I recall, there was only one issue (year 1899) on microfilm for those earliest years, and most of the issues are missing until the year 1907. They are pretty consistent then until sometime in the year of 1935. Even during those years, sometimes an issue would be missing or unreadable, and at least part of that time they did not publish an issue for a week or two at Christmas time. The Tennessee State Library and Archives should have listed at their website just which issues are available. Checking there might save researchers some time if they are looking for a particular time frame within the years of its publication. Alice King
In response to the question of the earliest newspaper on file at the Tenn Library and Archives, I believe it to be the Rutherford Register which has readable copies from the mid 1880's to about 1935 David Dycus
Madelon, You can find a list of Tennessee newspapers on microfilm at the Tennessee State Library and Archives on the following page of their WWW site: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/tn-paper.htm They will loan newspapers on microfilm to other libraries in Tennessee, but do not loan newspaper microfilms to libraries outside of the state. Their interlibrary loan policies and procedures can be found on their website at: http://www.state.tn.us./sos/statelib/pubsvs/mailill.htm The newspapers and dates included are listed by towns, I believe, with the county the town is located in enclosed in parentheses after the name of the town or city. The index lists the towns or cities alphabetically. Hope this helps. Does anyone have any information on the Grayar family. My great grandfather was James Grayar Wells. In the 1870's he was the editor of the Trenton News. His father was Jesse Iverson Wells who ran a foundry in Trenton. His mother was Sarah Meriwether Grayar. I have been able to find almost no information at all about the Grayar family. Sarah's parents were probably James Grayar and Charlotte Hassel. But that is all I have. The name may have been spelled several ways. Our family bible (originally the Bible of the wife of James Grayar Wells, Mary Ada Currey Wells) has it spelled Grayar and Grayer. Another possible spelling may have been Greer??? If anyone has any clues regarding the Grayar or the Hassel family I would appreciate the help. The family Bible also had several funeral notices pressed in its pages these include: * Mrs. Emma M. Grigsby. Services at the Presbyterian Church, Trenton, Tenn., by the Rev. J. T. Rothrock, June, 8, 1880 * Willie Myers and infant son of Prof. J. C. Myers at the residence of Mrs. A. E. Brown by the Rev. J. W. Anderson, Trenton, Tenn., August 6, 1879 * Mrs. John W. Cox at the Episcopal Church, Trenton, Tenn. By the Rev. C.F. Collins, January 16, 1890 * Infant son of A. G. and Nannie McDearmon by Rev. J. M. Scott, August 3, 1877. * Irma Howard daughter of Mr. And Mrs. S. H. Howard. Services by the Rev. Joseph R. Gray, January 3, 1878. * Mrs. Maybelle Hays wife of R. C. Hayes. Services by Rev. David Leith, January 20, 1889, Trenton, Tenn. * Robert I. Chester at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Hu. Calvin Smith, Brownsville, Tenn. Interred at the Riverside Cemetery, Jackson, Tenn., January 16, 1892. Kenneth Richardson Wells Orlando, Florida
Hello List: I received some nice comments about the Hunt Paper, so I added the other three pages to my family page. The link is below. There are quite a few Gibson county people's names, and also some 1941 news. I also added some more unknown pictures of the Weaver/Harrison family. If anyone has any information on them,,would love to hear from you. You also might like to look at the Mississippi Title for a 1923 Ford Roadster, that my Uncle, John Franklin Anthony, bought in 1928. He moved to Gibson County not long after that,, and probably drove that 22 horsepower machine to Humboldt. Take care,,,,Red Anthony http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/n/t/L-E-Anthony/

I'm looking for anyone with Peacock surname in 1860 Gibson Co. Census. When I used the search engine of the Gibson site for PEACOCK it came up with "1860 Census of Gibson County, TN p.394B" but when I clicked to get to that page, no PEACOCK listed. Would someone have access to the 1860 census and be able to look this up for me - Thanks - Ray _______________________________ Ray and Joyce Horton and family "Horton Family" <sunray@erie.net> 2720 Ellsworth Ave. Erie, PA 16508 814-454-7191 (work) 814-864-2958 (home)
My Gibson County connection is my GG Grandfather Dr. Rufus Wilie PEACOCK m Mary Jane WOODSON (b25 Mar 1832) m on 4 Aug. 1852 in Gibson County. Mary Jane daughter of James P. WOODSON and Nancy GOODWIN. Rufus was in the 1850 Henry County Census. They had a son, James W. Peacock, b. either 1853 or 1864 and buried in the New Hope Cemetery (Milan Arsenal). I tend to believe the earlier date, since by 1860 Mary Jane apparently had died and Rufus remarried Martha Davie in Haywood County. Looking for death dates of Mary Jane and her son James W. Peacock. Also, did James Peacock grow up, marry and have children? Thanks for any input - Ray _______________________________ Ray and Joyce Horton and family "Horton Family" <sunray@erie.net> 2720 Ellsworth Ave. Erie, PA 16508 814-454-7191 (work) 814-864-2958 (home)
