    3. Madelon: The once removed means the cousin is one generation before you. Twice removed means two generations before you. Your grand or great relatives would not be listed this way, the grand or great determines how many generations they are before you. Hope this helps,,,,,Red Anthony

    1. [TNGIBSON] Once removed?
    2. madlee
    3. Like Forrest Gump, I guess, "I'm not a very smart woman." Could you explain what it means to be second cousins twice removed, or ggg grandparents once removed, etc. Always confuses me. Thank you, Madelon

    1. Re: [TNGIBSON] Once removed?
    2. This is the best explanation I've seen about how to determine cousins and "removed". Jackie The cousin connection The cousin connection (and the nonsense about being "removed") begins with people having a common grandparent. Why grandparents? Because the next common person would be parents and obviously people with common parents are brother and sister! All the grandchildren of a common grandparent are first cousins. All the common great grandchildren are second cousins. Cousins and being removed has to do with counting the number of generations between two people and the common grandparent. First, though, we must review our "G's." The common grandparent = X A grandchild = GC A great grandchild = GGC A great great grandchild = GGGC A great great great grandchild = GGGGC Now, visualize all of these abbreviations in a row: X GC GGC GGGC GGGGC How many "G's" does a GC and another GC have in common? The answer is 1. That makes them first (1) cousins. How many "G's" does a GGGC and another GGGC have in common? The answer is 3. That makes them third (3) cousins. How many "G's" does a GC and a GGC have in common? The answer is 1. So, that puts them in the first cousin category. But, just like in math where you cross out common numbers and still have a remainder, you must count the extra "G's." The number of extra "G's" indicates how many times the cousins are removed. In this case, there is a remainder of 1. So the relationship between a GC and GGC is: first cousin, once removed. How about a GGGGC and a GGC? Remember that the number of common "G's" tells what kind of cousin it is and the remaining number of "G's" tell how far removed it is. In this case, there are 2 common "G's" which means the people are second cousins. With a remainder of 2 "G's" it means they are twice removed. Let's try a GC and a GGGGGGC. These two people only have one common "G" between them so they are in the first cousin range. The remainder of 5 tells us that these first cousins are five times (5X) removed. Well, that's really all there is to cousins and being removed. Now the mystery is gone and you didn't even have to try to figure out one of those hideous relationship charts.

    1. [TNGIBSON] Langa List
    2. Vicki Shaffer
    3. Some of you may have noticed that I placed a link to the Fred Langa list at the bottom of the Gibson page. It is an excellent newsletter to subscribe to! It comes about once or twice a week and is packed with information regarding your computer. I have picked up so many tips from it that I wanted you all to have a chance to subscribe to it, too. It gives the latest info on viruses, patches as well as general tips for just making your computer run better and faster. Fred's instructions are easy and simple to follow. Coming very soon is the new FREE firewall that you all should look in to. It's available now but Fred is waiting for all the bugs to get fixed before recommending downloading it. You can test your computer at: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and see how vulnerable you are. This is Steve Gibson's site and he has excellent tips there, too. After the first time I did, I followed all the instructions on screen to improve my computer's security and then bought BlackIce Defender to protect me from hackers. AND seriously I can't tell you how much of that is going on without you even knowing it when you are on line. When your ports are open and you are on line, your computer is probably being scanned dozens of times a day. I know because my BlackIce records all potential attacks. But, like I said, a new even better FREE firewall program will be here soon and I would urge you all to download it and use it when Fred says it's ready! This is a serious problem now days and I hope you all will take the time to test your computer and take measures to increase your security. There are things you can do now to improve your security by just making some simple adjustments! Sorry to bore you all with computer procedures but your computer might be crashing because of poor security that you aren't aware of. Unfortunately, this problem is only going to get worse so it's time to do something now to protect yourself! Join Fred's list........you won't be sorry! The link is at the bottom of the Gibson page on the left hand side. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson Vicki
