    1. [TNGIBSON] Press Release: First Families of Tennessee Book and ETHS Genealogy Conference
    2. East Tennessee Historical Society
    3. East Tennessee Historical Society Hosts Genealogy Conference and Family Reunion Celebration The sons and daughters of Tennessee's pioneer founders are heading home this Memorial Day weekend. The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) is hosting a weekend-long genealogy conference and family history fair, May 26-28, in Knoxville, Tennessee. A highlight of the conference will be a "family reunion" of members of the society's family heritage project, First Families of Tennessee (FFT)the debut of a new First Families of Tennessee book. Guests attending the conference will face a wide variety of options and activities, including a two-day genealogy conference featuring national and regional experts, a family history fair and street party in downtown Knoxville, motorcoach tours of historic East Tennessee sites, and a "family reunion" dinner at the home of Tennessee's first governor, John Sevier. The genealogy conference, held at Knoxville's Hilton Hotel, May 26-27, will examine Southeastern "roots and routes" - focusing on our ancestors and their migrations into and out of East Tennessee. Guest speakers will discuss a variety of topics including Scots-Irish research, Cherokee genealogy, Tennessee land records, Tennesseans in the California gold rush, frontier religion, and more. Experts will also discuss research topics in states associated with Tennessee's earliest residents, including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Descendants of Tennessee's first families will celebrate the publication of the East Tennessee Historical Society's newest book, First Families of Tennessee: A Register of Early Settlers and Their Descendants. The book, a tribute to the ancestors enrolled in the FFT project, will include names and vital stats of the more than 2,000 ancestors enrolled in the project, along with a registry of FFT members. The book will be unveiled in a special ceremony and will be available for purchase at the history conference. Guest speakers will include Dr. George K. Schweitzer, Charles Sherrill of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Russell Baker, Robert Davis, historian Walter Durham, and other experts on a variety of genealogical and historical topics. In addition to the multi-track genealogy conference, ETHS will host a genealogy and family history fair featuring mini-workshops for beginners, vendor displays, tours of local historic sites, carriage and trolley rides in downtown Knoxville, and living history demonstrations. The fair will also include a downtown street party outside the historical society's headquarters with live music, dramatic performances, historic reenactments, children's activities and more. While the theme of the weekend will be built around a family reunion of First Families of Tennessee members, attendance at all the events is open to anyone with an interest in history and genealogy. The First Families of Tennessee was founded by the East Tennessee Historical Society in 1993 to honor the state's early residents and to recognize their descendants. The program is open to those who can prove descent from a person living in any part of Tennessee by 1796. Housed in Knoxville's Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, the First Families of Tennessee files provide a one-of-a-kind resource for historical and genealogical research. For additional information about ETHS, the First Families of Tennessee project, or the upcoming genealogy conference and First Families of Tennessee reunion, visit the historical society's website at www.east-tennessee-history.org # # #

    3. Morning Vicki - That is a great idea. I have nothing to contribute, but certainly would like to benefit - don't we all. The Thetfords arrived in Gibson Co. ca 1827 traveling from Trigg/Caldwell, Kentucky, having earlier settled in Ky ca 1810, moving from So. Carolina, and Georgia The Charles, Jeremiah and William Williams families also arrived in that time frame, assertedly from Alabama. Does anybody have suggestions or examples how the two extended families may have traveled: by wagons, by boat, what routes, etc. Tom Davis California

    3. Marilyn Stroh has written a great migration pattern for her Wilson's (not mine..but we are trying to connect). She just sent it to me. It gave me the idea that a "Migrations" page would be great on the Gibson site. I'm going to post Marilyn's to a new site called MIRGRATIONS and hope the rest of you will try and compose one, too. Just write whatever you know so far. You never know......it might help you make a connection!!! Here's Marilyn's essay she wrote: A WAY BILL FROM SAMPSON CO., NORTH CAROLINA TO GIBSON CO., TN For me, the fascination with genealogy is, not putting lists of names on a computer, but rather absorbing the flavor of the times, and understanding of the history of our country from the personal stories of our relatives. So when I came across this copy of the early 1800's version of a AAA ‘trip-tick’, I did a back flip. It was used by my children’s ancestor, James Wilson, to make the trek from Sampson Co to Gibson Co in 1839. I had wondered how they found their way unless they hired a guide, as was done on the much longer trips made by pioneers going out to Texas or California. James Wilson brought his family, consisting of his wife Elizabeth Ward Wilson and children ranging in age from 13 - 1. ( Shadrack, Horace, Bryant Becton, Judith Ann, John James, Susan Jane and Delilah Catherine). Along with them came other wagons including Kings, Wards, and Kornegays and probably others. It wasn’t unusual for wagon trains to number 50 wagons. If you have relatives who made the trip from Sampson Co to one of the counties surrounding Gibson, get your Atlas out and follow their route. He was in the 1850 Henry County Census, Gibson County marriage records (1852), the 1860 Haywood Cnty census, 1860 Haywood Cnty marriages. I have all that info. He remarried a third time in Montgomery Cnty. in 1870, then moved to NJ in 1871. He should be somewhere in TN in 1870. If someone could locate him in 1870 I'd be very appreciative. - Ray _______________________________ Ray and Joyce Horton and family "Horton Family" <sunray@erie.net> 2720 Ellsworth Ave. Erie, PA 16508 814-454-7191 (work) 814-864-2958 (home)

2. Hello, Can anyone help me with a search for information on Walter Wood Mosley? Walter Wood Mosley was born in Gibson County on June 29, 1880 in Dyersburg, TN. He had an older brother, Alonzo Washington Mosley, born in Gibson County, in 1878, and another sibling named Vasilear born abt. 1876. I can find nothing to indicate who the parents of these children were. I can't find any info on birth certificates or anything on Vasilear. Possible parents may have been JM Mosley and Ellnorah Mosley. Can anyone find a marriage record for JM or Ellnorah? Thanks, Suzanne

    3. I'm looking for information on the descendants of Reuben Biggs (1775- ca1858), who came to Gibson County around 1825. He was born in Martin Co NC and lived in Beaufort Co NC before coming to Stewart Co TN in 1818. He's listed as a head of household in the Stewart County 1820 census. Reuben's first wife, Sally Watson, died sometime after the birth of her last child, who was born around 1811. If she's the oldest female in Reuben's household in 1820 and her age is recorded correctly on the census, she would have been born before 1775. Reuben's second wife, Matilda, was born in NC around 1783, according to the 1850 Gibson County census. Her maiden name may have been Fletcher or she may have had a daughter who married a Fletcher. Listed in Reuben's 1850 household with him and Matilda were Lucy Fletcher 37 NC and Martha Fletcher 18 TN. In listing Reuben's children, "History of Tennessee and Tennesseans" states "The maiden name of his first wife was Watson, who was the mother of all his children, his sons being James, Kader, Luke, Amariah, Nehemiah, Zach and William." All were evidently born in North Carolina. The book lists no daughters, but census records suggest Reuben may have had at least three, born between 1794 and 1810. The sons: 1. James, b ca 1796 2. Kader, b ca 1797, married Mary Morgan 3. Luke, b ca 1798, married Marina Bennett 4. Amariah, b ca 1802 5. Nehemiah, b ca 1808, married Jemima Ringgold in Gibson Co in 1842 6. Zachariah, b ca 1809, appears to have been married 1st to Sally Dunnagen in 1829, 2nd to Martha Penney in 1837, 3rd to Elizabeth Perteat or Partiel in 1840. 7. William, b ca 1811, married Elizabeth Sellers in 1830. Would like to hear from descendants, and to learn anything about Sally Watson or her ancestors. Her parents may have been from Beaufort Co or Martin Co NC. Does anyone know of a connection between the Fletchers of Stewart Co and Gibson Co? Where and when did Reuben marry Matilda? Where are they buried? Does anyone know who might have Reuben's family bible? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Andy Anderson
