Surnames: RUST, LANGFORD, COOK Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ReB.2ACE/2318.1.2 Message Board Post: Thanks for your posting, Linda. Here's what I have: My great-great grandmother was Mary Rust, who married James Elias Langford in Gibson, Tennessee in 1848. Family in the area say she was born about 28 March 1828 in Hawkins, Tennessee. She died 17 Sept. 1911 in Gibson County. I could find no information on her parents, and no information on Rusts in Hawkins county. So I started speculating. I found John and Nancy Rust in the same civil district in the 1850 census as my Mary (about 20 houses away). John and Nancy had a son named Atlas - and my Mary named one of her sons Atlas. John Rust was in the 1840 census in Gibson County. His listing was 1110001-111001. This indicates they possibly had one son and one daughter not listed in the 1850 census as they were already of age by then. That's the right age to be my Mary. John Rust was not in Gibson Co in 1830... and my Mary was born in 1828, NOT in Gibson County. In 1830 I found John Rust in Weakley County, which is right next door to Gibson. Although family says Mary was born in Hawkins Co., I've found no trace of any Rusts in Hawkins Co. In addition, Hawkins is on the other side of the state. John Rust is a hard name to research as there's only about a million of 'em. I did find this posting online: "John Rust, born 1801 was living with his son John in the 1880 census in Heaths, Gibson, Tennessee. The son John was born 1840 and was married to Ellen. Their children were Atlas, Fannie, Jennie, Nara, Estilla, Herman and John, ages 15 to one and all born in Tennessee. John the father was born in North Carolina (John the son and John the grandson b. tenn) with parents born in North Carolina" John Rust and Nancy Cook were married in Granville, NC on 31 March 1823 according to the online marriage records for Granville County on the NC/Graville usgenweb site. Marriage date from Granville County North Carolina marriages online on the NC/Granville Co USGENWEB site. A John Rust is located on page 215 of the Occupant Entry Book, located in the Register of Deeds office in Dresden, TN (from index on Weakley Co. genweb page)The page mentions something about a Weakley/Gibson Land swap in 1837 - is this how John Rust got to Gibson Co? That's all I have so far. I have a copy of a marriage certificate for my James Langford and Mary Rust but there's no indication on it as to who her parents were. I'm now looking for a will for John Rust to see if it would possibly mention a daughter, Mary. Please let me know if you have any information that would shed any light on this. Thanks again for your posting, Trish

John S. and Nancy Cooke Rust did have a James N. but I regret to say that my information on him is cloudy. Did your James marry secondly a Jane Heath? The information that was given to me was that his first wife was Mary Jane Pemberton but this could be mixed with John Rust who married Lucy Pemberton, 29 Sept. 1853,and your information of a Mary Jane Walker could be correct. Please give me your reason for the Walker marriage.

He left Gibson Co. and went to IL where I believe he is buried. He remarried here, but it obviously didn't work out, because Polly Glasscock is buried at Salem Methodist Cemetery near Trenton. He married again in IL to another Sarah ?? - I believe his first wife was named Sarah also. I am no relation, but looked up some things about him for another person.S. I agree that the information from the Latter Day Saints that is on ancestry.com has to be wrong. I do know Moses Joshua Harley is in the 1830 Census in Gibson Co. and that would jive okay with the dates you gave me for the county formation. He married and had a child there in 1839 and he and his wife and child are in the 1840 census in Gibson Co. as well. He then moved to Mississippi. I think his parents lived and died in another county in TN. They may have died in 1815 when he was only three, but it would have to be in a county like Smith. I will check there.... you gave me the only lead I have yet on finding his parents from that early in the 1800's. Thanks for your time and good luck with your family searches. I really appreciate you spending so much time answering my questions! Take care, Amy : ) P.S. I'll let you know if I find anything about his parents!

I did find John Harley on the road crews with John Rust. In those days people who lived on the road were assigned sections and kept it up. I think you may be in error or we are dealing with two generations. Gibson County was not formed until 1823 out of what was known as the Western District, so the information that Moses parents died there in 1815 is not correct. Many of these people came to Gibson from Smith County TN formed in 1799 from Sumner. Try looking for them there.

I truly appreciate your quick responses and hope to only have a few more questions for you. So Martha Harley and possibly Moses father was a John Harley? Who is Robert? Was he a brother of John's? When did John die? I have Moses and Martha's father dying in 1815. Where is John buried? Any info. on John's wife Martha Moses (Moses was her maiden name) Martha Harley is their daughter. Thanks again for any info! Sorry for the additional questions. To find out Martha and Moses father's name is John once and for all would mean so much to our family. We are planning a trip to that area soon and would love to have the answer before we come. Thanks again Alice! Amy : )

If it's the Martha Harley that was born in 1809. She is Moses's older sister. I just wish I knew her father's name. Her mother's name was Martha Moses. Moses was named after his mother's last name. Martha was named after her mother's first name of course. Martha Moses was married to somebody Harley... we don't have a first name... Martha Harley and Moses Harley's parents supposedly both died in 1815. We don't know if it was disease or what. Moses would have been only 3 years old. Perhaps Robert Harley was an uncle that raised them perhaps... or maybe he is the father, and didn't really die in 1815. What year did Robert Harley die and what were the names of his offspring? Any additional information I would be forever grateful. Amy Harley : )

I have a Christopher Williams that was born in 1815 in Smith Co, TN. Think his mother was Jane "Jenny" Robinson, dau/o Stephen Robinson and Elizabeth Holland. Jenny and her husband had both died by 1828. Their children were James, Isaac, Christopher, Lucy, Betsy (probably Elizabeth) and Jane. Have no idea which Williams was the father of this bunch. There must have been Braswell connections--Evans and Avant! Christopher's children had these middle names. Christopher and his wife, Elizabeth Rebecca Evans Wms left Gibpson Co, TN, for Texas in 1854. Any help at this brickwall would be much appreciated. MJ
