REUBEN BIGGS was born 20 Oct 1775 in North Carolina, probably in Martin County. (His name was not Reuben William Biggs, as listed in some online submissions.) He died around 1858 in Gibson County, Tennessee. He married first, probably in Beaufort Co NC around 1795, a woman named Sally. In his household in the 1820 census of Stewart Co TN, Sally is presumed to be the woman over 45. If so, she was born before 1775. She was the mother of all of Reuben's children. The date and place of her death have not yet been learned. Sally's last name was probably Williams, judging from the Beaufort Co NC wills of James Williams (1792) and Thomas Williams (1796). The Biggs family information in Hale & Merritt's 1913 "History of Tennessee and Tennesseans" was ostensibly provided by Dr. Zach Biggs, son of Luke and grandson of Reuben and Sally. In the book it's stated that the maiden name of Reuben's first wife was Watson. This is evidently a mistake, either the informant or the writer having confused Dr. Zach's maternal grandmother with his paternal grandmother. In his Civil War questionnaire Dr. Zach said that the maiden name of his mother's mother (Mrs. Bennett) was Watson. Reuben appears as a head of household in the 1800 and 1810 Beaufort Co censuses. He brought his family from NC to Stewart Co TN in 1818. His son Luke moved on to Trenton, Gibson Co TN around 1820. Reuben followed around 1825, and presumably his other sons except Kader came with him at that time. Whether any married daughters stayed in Stewart or also moved to Gibson is not known. In Reuben's 1850 Gibson Co household was Matilda Biggs, born around 1783 in NC, presumably his second and last wife, whom he evidently married sometime between 1820 and 1830. Also in the household in 1850 were Lucy Fletcher 37 NC and Martha Fletcher 18 TN. Fletcher family researchers advise that, according to their findings, Matilda was a sister of Thomas and William C. Fletcher of Gibson County. So Lucy and Martha would have been related to Matilda rather than descended from Reuben. The Hale & Merritt book lists Reuben's sons as "James, Kader, Luke, Amariah, Nehemiah, Zach and William". The names are in order of birth. Although the book does not name any daughters, census records suggest there were at least three. One is believed to have been Drucilla Biggs (1804-1877), who married Timothy Anderson of Stewart Co TN in 1820. They moved to Cobden, Union Co IL and had children Sally, Cornelius Williams, Alfred, Carol, Newton, Louisa, Lucinda, Magilbra, Reuben Marion, Alzada Matilda and Marshall Alston Anderson. Martha may or may not have been the name of another of Reuben's daughters. It has been claimed that a woman named Martha Biggs married first John Marshall and secondly Edward Hogan in Stewart County and lived at Indian Mound. In the 1820 census John Marshall was listed next to Matthew Morgan, father-in-law of Kader Biggs. However, this Martha ("Biggs") Marshall may actually have been the Martha Marshall named by Matthew Morgan as his daughter in his will. She named her son Matthew, and she was consistently listed on the census as born in Tennessee around 1800. This is several years before Reuben Biggs or his brothers John and Asa moved to Tennessee. 1. James W. Biggs, b ca 1796, m ca 1817 Susannah or Susan Ross in Stewart Co and d 1823 Henry Co TN, leaving three children: Reuben b ca 1818 and Thomas M. b ca 1820, and possibly a daughter Elizabeth b ca 1823. Susan is quite likely the same Susan Ross who married James William Matheny and lived next door to Reuben Biggs in Weakley Co TN in 1840. 1850 Weakley census shows "R. Bigs" with wife Nancy and children Reuben, Susan and James. 1860 Weakley census shows Thomas M. Biggs with wife Elizabeth [Brann] Biggs and children Drucilla, James T., Caroline, Reuben, Lacy and Vincent. 2. Kader Biggs, b ca 1797, m Mary Morgan. Probable or possible children: Sarah (m William A. B. Gately), Matthew, Joseph, Reuben (known son), Mary A. (m William Levi Beasley), William, Nathan and Frances. Frances may have been a daughter-in-law. Further details on Kader and Matthew's family groups are in recent messages to the BIGGS-L list. 3. Luke Biggs, b 19 Nov 1798, d 29 Oct 1858, m in NC ca 1818 Marina Bennett, b 1 Mar 1801 Columbia SC, d 6 May 1860; both buried Gibson Co TN. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/cemeteries/biggs.htm See the will of William Bennett, proved Martin Co NC 1817, in which he names daughter "Merina". http://searches.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/nc/martin/wills/bennettwm1817w.txt . Luke's children: Henry, James B., Martha A. (m Wm. H. Bailey), Mary E. (m Sterling Scott), Zachariah "Zach", Reuben Washington*, Jeremiah R., Elizabeth F. (m Thomas Ray), and Emma J. (m Daniel H. Queries re Jeremiah are at the Biggs Family Genealogy Forum. *The name Reuben Washington Biggs is composed from "Reuben" in the 1850 census and "Washington" in Hale & Merritt's book. 4. Amariah Biggs, b 10 Dec 1802, d 20 May 1889 Howard Co AR, according to a WorldConnect submission. Several children listed there. 5. Nehemiah Biggs, b ca 1808, m Jemima Ringold. Jemima is head of household in 1860, with John, Mary, Matilda, Joseph and Hannah. 6. Zachariah Biggs, b ca 1809, apparently m/1 Sally Dunnagen 1829, m/2 Martha Penney 1837, m/3 Elizabeth Perteat or Parteal 1840. Fourteen children listed in WorldConnect submission. 7. Reuben William Biggs, b ca 1811, m Elizabeth Sellers, moved to Dunklin Co MO by 1860. Children from 1850 and 1860 censuses: Mary, Joel, Nancy, Caroline, Julia, Elizabeth, Barnabas/Barnett B. Wondered if anyone could help me-- I am trying to find additional information on Ollie J (1-28-1889) & Martha NELSON (ca 1890) . There is a book published about 1935, which lists existing copies of newspapers. It also tells you what library has copies of the newspaper. Your reference librarian should know about it. I can't remember the name of the book. My experience with interlibrary loans of newspapers on microfilm is that there is always a cost ($3 to $5 per reel). Our library doesn't charge for interlibrary loans unless the lending library charges for the loan. There is an index to death certificates on microfilm, which starts in 1908, and skips 1913. The early indices have a few years together, but later indices are for a single year at a time. The indices are available at the Tennessee Archives in Nashville, and may be available on interlibrary loan. You can also request a death certificate, and they will check for you. Last time we got one, I believe the cost was only $5.
