Bridgett, I know I'm dense sometimes, but why are we using USIT instead of Rootsweb, which is also free and doesn't require a graphic (particularly for those county sites already on Rootsweb)?? While everyone is attaching the graphic to their pages, please check out your links to TNGenWeb. We need to get all links to go to www.tngenweb.org. I would like all URL's changed by August 1, so I can let the folks at USIT know, so their server won't be doing double duty with 2 URL's to our site. Thanks !! Received a msg from USIT yesterday. The msg contained a graphic that they wanted on "every page on TNGenWeb". All the graphic is just stating the fact that they are a sponsor of TNGenWeb. This graphic is on the main TNGenWeb page if you would like to see it. This graphic MUST appear on every main TNGenWeb County Page, and every page that is uploaded to the USIT server. So the folks that have sites off USIT only need to install it on your main page. The link to the graphic can be done this way (if you like, this will center it on your page): <p><CENTER><A HREF="http://www.usit.net/"><IMG SRC="../graphics/usitlogo.gif" width="172" height="71" ALT="" border="0"></A></CENTER><p> For those counties with sites other than usit, your best bet would be to right click on the graphic and save it to upload to your site. I don't hand down many edicts, I don't like doing so, but this is not a debatable issue it must be done. USIT doesn't ask that much out of us, while our bill keeps growing and growing. For June our bill was $718.80 -- placing this graphic on our pages is the least we can do to show our appreciation. Thanks for all of you who sent me files a couple of weeks ago. Remember I upgraded to Windows95 and deleted Netscape? It said that four files were missing. You all were good enough to send me the files. UPDATE When I replaced the files Windows then said another two were missing. nwnp32.dll and msnp32.dll I was determined to repair this problem on my own. I started searching message boards and behold, several were having this same problem. The supposed fixes ran from keep adding files to totally delete your harddrive and start again. But I thought with this many people having the same problem something more common must be wrong. SOLUTION After reading enough on Windows95 to become quite the expert I learned two things. Microsoft consists of a bunch of trained monkeys pushing switches and pulling levers. (Bill Gates for some reason reminds me of the Wizard from Wizard of OZ..."Pay no mind to the man behind the curtain.") True the solution came from the Microsoft Knowledge Base but it was nearly a full page. What it boiled down to was opening control panel and unchecking dialup communication. Now it no longer asks for files. (I do not use dialup networking with AOL) The problem came from my faulty installation of Netscape not the deletion of the original Netscape. During installation I made a mistake and checked dial up networking. After unchecking dialup in Control Panel and saying several prayers and promising God I would be a better person I rebooted. Problem solved! Now I don't care to keep my promise to God, I need to be a better person. What I do hate is telling my wife it was my mistake. I though "Tell her it was all Microsofts fault." Then I remembered I had promised to do a better person. Chip Union County TnGenWeb

Does anyone know a reputable researcher close to TSLA that I can contact. Tom Sisco
To the List: A listing of the 4,000 Tennesseans who applied to the Southern Claims Commission in 1871-1873, for restitituion of damages inflicted by the Union Army on their property during the Civil War, has just been posted on the Tenn. State Library & Archives web site. The list provides the claimant's name and county of residence. If you would like to have a copy of the list organized by county, please write me and specify which county you are interested in, and I can send you the information in a Word 6.0 doc file. You may feel free to use data from this page, or from any TSLA web page, on your GenWeb site, but please give us appropriate credit on your page. Instructions regarding how to obtain copies of the claims files are given on the introductory page. I'll be answering Fred Smoot's answers to my questions on the TNChat list later today. For now I'm off to visit a genealogy/historical society in Fargo, ND whose county I host.

Mitzi, two wonderful internet resources for Tennessee researchers would be: Tennessee Genealogy and History WebRing http://funnelweb.utcc.utk.edu/~kizzer/genehist/tghring/ and New River Notes http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm (which overlaps into Va. The Queries have been updated and as always, added to surname helper search. A new section has been added called "Letters of Hawkins County". It will contain letters to and from Hawkins countians. There are a few already up. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhawkin/letter.htm New names have been added to "People researching Hawkins County families" http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhawkin/resear.htm Another branch has been added to the Galbraith Family file http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhawkin/links.html#family files And the Hawkins page has been awarded "The Palmer Award" for "Regions Best Midwestern/South". Many thanks to the volunteers who have made this possible. Hello Everyone, I am giving a presentation at the Campbell County Historical Society this Thursday entitled "Genealogy and the Internet." For a handout for them to keep, I have created an HTML document that I also put online. It will remain online for a while for them to use to easily find the web sites that I talk about. If you have the chance, will you look at it? If there are any good genealogy links that I am missing, please let me know. I will probably be adding to it all this week. It's at http://members.aol.com/setraveler/links.html Thanks, Mitzi
