Bridgett and Nancy are very intelligent people and I am sure they also agree. However, you have stated that they are "at best unethical" which is an unfortunate accusation. You have just called two dedicated, beloved members of TNGenWeb unethical. I think you owe them an apology. You also say they committed copyright violation. That means you are saying they did something illegal. Are you a lawyer? Whether you are right or not, why not take care of this through private correspondence? And instead of dwelling on thoughts like "unethical" or "illegal" why not think of their actions in a positive fashion. 3. Fellow TNGeners, I will agree to disagree with the folks who have written in to thank the elves. Bridgett stated on the ALL list that they realized they could do this late Friday night, and instead of waiting for permission, they dove right in and started adding code to pages. I asked her why she did not wait till morning and ask the CC's if they would like this done. She has not answered me. I would still like an answer. If the elves had asked first, there would be no problem, but as they did not, I am worried they have done something (however well meanning) at best unethical, and at worst illegal. If no permission was given, then it was a copyright violation. MNSHO. If you do not agree, then that is fine too. It is water under the bridge now. 3. I for one am extremely delighted that Nancy and her son did the work on the logos. I am very busy with my pages now and didn't need the extra work. As for my feelings about my copyrighted pages, the copyrights are there to protect against anyone making a monetary gain from them. I know that Nancy, Bridgett or her son do not ever plan to make money from this project and I have no problem whatsoever with them adding a script and making my life easier. 3. Hello Everyone - I just got back from my latest (almost biweekly, sometimes less) visit to the great state of Tennessee. So, I'm slowly picking my way through the various places that I filter my email to... I, (for one) am glad that the USIT logo thingy was updated across all of the files/pages hosted by TNGenWeb. (Yes, I had *not* done mine yet, so 'naturally' I would think that it's OK. Also, I do plan on 'fixing up' all of my pages to add to the work already done). All of us have options regarding our association with TNGenWeb and 'hosting issues'. I think that a lot of consideration went into the decision about how to ensure 'USIT' compliance(in order to keep the 'for free' service(I guess)). For what it's worth, I also maintain a site with KYGenWeb. At this time, they promote an almost exclusive reliance on RootsWeb. Ya' gotta' remember that nothing is for 'free'. And I hope that a lot of consideration is made on your part regarding how you 'feel' about the effort of Jim [Coles?] to (potentially) save most of us a lot of work. I hope that some of the ideas presented above will help TNGenWeb in some small way. Yes but one at a time as they work on things, not all at once. 3. Hi y'all, With the exeception of those efficient folks who had already done their pages and those that preferred to do their own, Jim has downloaded, applied the required logo and uploaded TWO THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED pages, which represents days, perhaps weeks of work that y'all don't have to do. Hopefully this effort saves time that we all can use to continue to make TNGenweb a wonderful place for our visitors. We checked pages as we went along and hopefully did not double up on any pages that had already been done, even if you hadn't notified me. Some people are not using </body> tags. If you are not using them, your pages may have been missed as this is the marker used for placing the logos. All original pages are backed up on Jim'sservers in case of any problems. Some folks will have 2 usit logos the old one and the new one on their main pages, maybe 30 or so of the 2400....your RC or I will be happy to reload these for you. The counters were crunched in the process of changing permission, but will be operative within a couple of hours. Nancy ncole@coffey.com Assistant TNGenweb Coordinator

    3. I vote "yes" on the question of establishing TNGenWeb as a non-profit corporation. I feel a bit sheepish as I cast my vote because although I have given some amount of time to considering this option, I'm sure that not all advantages/disadvantages have occurred to me. Although I could become a more informed voter by subscribing to the TNChat list, the tardiness of my reply to this straw vote demonstrates my severe shortage of "free" time. I choose to spend my meager "free" time resources on genealogy, but ya'll move ahead with my blessings. David Taylor Henderson County

    3. I'd like to make some things a little clearer on the below post. The ISP that is sponsoring the domain name for the TNGenWeb Project, US Internet, has been sponsoring TNGenWeb for a little over 2 years now. Within that 2 years they have requested very little out of us, even though we are now processing over 2000 hits a day, storing over 150 MB (closing in on 200MB) of information and delivering over 350 MB of data per day to our visitors. My ASC and myself have always tried to help the CC's in any way that we feel like it is possible. After adding the logo to the main pages for TNGenWeb and my own county site, I saw that this might be a problem for some of the CC's, so did my ASC. We felt that possibly a script could be written by her son (who is our software engineer) to get the required logos on county pages with little or no effort from the CC's. While waiting to see if this could be done several of the cc's had done their own pages and uploaded them already. When known that a county had been done, those counties were omitted from the script. So the number of double logos are not that great. When it was realized that a script could be written, it was late at night and my ASC and her son went ahead and started on getting the logos in place. They stayed up all night doing this. Before she went to bed at about 5 AM in the morning -- she wrote the cc mailing list what was happening, etc. We are sorry we couldn't notify those who had added the logos already so they could not benefit from this. No county code was tampered with except to add the logo at the bottom of the page. We have not heard any complaints from any county coordinator whose pages we have added the logo to in this fashion. However we are receiving many thanks from those coordinators who benefited from this action. This includes from one county host that would otherwise have had to manually change 800+ pages. We have received only 3 complaints so far, including the one below. One of the others is from Mary's co-host. And the other from the host that had already uploaded 167 pages and had wished we had notified him sooner. I don't know why Mary feels the USGenWeb by-laws not passing would have changed this situation, as it was done at State Level not a National one, and would not have applied in this situation. Not having any bylaws would result in the same situation. It is a State Level decision, not a National one. If I, my ASC and our software engineer are guilty of anything, I think we are guilty of caring about our hosts to the point we would go without sleep to make things easier for them. I am truly sorry that you folks had to be subjected to so called internal problems that a few feel are present within the TNGenWeb Project.
