Tomorrow will mark my first full year as Host of The Smith CO Page. We have a long way to go and just doing the queries is a lot of work "You Are Visitor 8354" wow thats a lot of hits for our first year. Thanks for all your support and i have never enjoyed being in such and elite group of Genealogy Experts. We look forward to 1999 and growing with the Tengen Team!!
Your recollection is absolutely correct, George. Johnson County was indeed delinked from the TNGenWeb for a couple of weeks last summer. The basic issue was over CONTROL, just as it is now! We did everything that was asked of us. However, in my heart I knew it was a matter of time before it would happen again to somebody somewhere. Sure enough it happened - only this time with far more reaching affects. You want unkind statements? Some of the most unkind (putting it mildly) statements come from people in the camp for status quo. You know who I'm talking about George. If our banning and speaking out causes just one person to check out what's happening and to research for themselves just what's going on, it will have been worth it. Mary Floy of Johnson County and proud of it and of Pam!! P.S. I do admire the way though, that you turned this situation around to bring up something that was settled months ago. >From the article: "if the city governments computers are programmed not to accept cookie files, then the cookie file should be empty and the suit over the cookie file might be a pointless exercise." What do you bet someone is deleting the cookie files as we speak? Now this is an idea I had never thought of, wow! In my opinion the cookie files are public domain. Chip Union County TnGenWeb
Believe it or not I am going to defend AOL. I can't believe I'm doing this. Most of those dirty e-mails and commercial spam we get from AOL addresses are forged. If you are an AOL subscriber and get the full header you can find where they actually come from. It's buried deep in the header but if you read far enough it's usually hotmail, juno or something. I might also suggest that when you get them from an AOL address, highlight the entire e-mail and forward it to these two addresses: tosemail1@aol.com tosspam@aol.com AOL is very interested in stopping these people and are prosecuting them very often. Sending it to abuse@aol.com gets you a computer generated reply, and I've wondered if anyone actually reads them. Chip Union County TnGenWeb
Dear Nancy and TNGenWeb Coordinators, We have redesigned the Johnson County Genealogy page and we have resigned from the TNGenWeb and the USGenWeb. What with Pam being banned from every list housed on the rootsweb server, including the TNGen-l (required for TN CCs) and TNChat lists, she has been unable to either post or receive any messages. Just to make it clear, the banned four cannot post or receive messages to ANY list on RW. That means surname or county lists. That also means, if their pages were on rootsweb (which they're not) they would not be able to FTP updated pages. I don't know if you're aware of that. As for me the power supply to my computer fried and I'm waiting for it to be fixed. Until then, I'm using my old computer and I know once again why I bought a new one. How many of you who are "list owners" of county and/or surname lists on Rootsweb are aware someone other than you can sub and unsub people without your permission or knowledge? And that you can do absolutely nothing to prevent it? But, please let me make one thing clear...we KNOW that neither Bridgett or Nancy did the unsubbing, it was done either by Brian Levrich, owner of Rootsweb, or he had someone else from Rootsweb do it. On the other hand, a couple of days after the four were banned, a statement from the Advisory Board of USGW was made that they backed Brian's actions. Again, no word, no contact, no nothing. Not even from Bridgett the TNGenWeb State Coordinator who is also on the USGW Advisory Board. Why not, Bridgett, why not?? Nancy, "tiring" is an understatement. Do you have any idea what its like to be tried in a public forum for no reason and not be able to defend yourself? That is exactly what happened to Pam, Carol Dean, Susan Cook and Teresa Lindquist. Several people, including me, have asked on the ALL list to please list the exact reasons for their banning. We received no response at all except negative responses from people who have taken it waaaay beyond anything resembling the truth! As to being with the "wrong people", I don't know what that means or what makes them the "wrong people". Unfortunately most volunteers don't know what really happened. As for the buttons on Johnson County page, they are/were meant to make fun of the whole silly situation. But I guess they can also serve as a warning to other "list owners". It can happen to them too. If anyone from TNGen web management or even SE/ME had sent one e-mail to Pam, to show an ounce of concern over her being banned from project communication, it might have been a whole lot different. The banning of the "Rootsweb 4" was for 30 days. At the end of that time, they MAY be allowed back on a case to case basis. No criteria has been made as to what they need to do to come back in good stead. They did nothing to apologize for or to retract. What other choice do Pam and I have but to resign! And so, Johnson County has resigned from the USGW/TNGenWeb project. June 1996 was when I started with TNGenWeb and I think my first upload was in July or August 1996. Pam became Co-Coordinator the following year and I bless her every day since. The URL for the pages will remain the same since none are on Rootsweb. The same goes for the Johnson County mail list. The JCT researchers will not lose. They have always been our first priority. We will continue on the same course we've been following all this time. For me its truly sad to see the political direction USGW is going. On the other hand, incorporating Tennessee should go a long way to taking power away from the top or wherever its coming from. Hi Friends, Last Sunday I added new and modified Sumner County TNGenWeb files. But, I never got around to sending out the update. Here it is: Bible Records Project Morris Family Bible - NEW Family Album - bios Morris Family - NEW Rider Family - NEW Published Resouces relating to Sumner Co. TN - UPDATED Reunions - UPDATED Bledsoe Reunion - NEW Dillehay/Veatch Reunion - NEW Wills William Cage - NEW Samuel Morris - NEW Lee Perdue - NEW Additionally, I made another major change. Diane and I will no longer be using the CCHelper system for processing queries. We have received a GenConnect Board that will make this process bundles easier. The old queries, surnames, and researchers are still on the page and can be accessed in their entirity. All new queries and surnames will be handled through the GenConnect Board. For those of you who wish to post new queries, the URL is: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Sumner I think you will really like this new system. Each month the old queries will be archived. But you will be able to seach for any surname (old and new) by using the Search/Personalize the Display option. Thanks again to each of you for all the contributions! Danene and Diane
The below message came through the State Coordinators List. I doubt any of you link to this site, but thought I would pass this information on. It may behoove you to check out your links, I mean actually visit them, to make sure that they actually link to the sites you thought they linked to. Apparently porn sites pick up expired domain names and then use them to their advantage. Apparently several elementary school teachers in the western states, had linked up to this site, had not checked their links in sometime for content and got a very rude awakening when visiting the site. Jane, I probably got the same messages from someone supposedly on AOL, only I got six of them and also got a notice that the Spam Fighter on Rootsweb stopped the same message from getting on my list. Think AOL has been having a lot of problems lately. There was an announcement on the List list the other day that something was wrong. Then this morning I got four messages, none addressed specifically to me, about some off the wall reports I supposedly requested. Not so. Have sent offending messages back to abuse@aol.com. And have also notified the people at my ISP. Seems most of the SPAM is coming from aol addresses these days. Someone must have found a way to bypass the spammola detector. Edgar Edgar D. another way to cut down on any SPAM you might receive is to be sure to click or "unclick" the box that is at the bottom (the very bottom) of any online order form. This is where they get permission to sell your name to list purchasers. And, you never know unless you read it if you need to click or "unclick", so check to make sure! You can, without even knowing it, give permission for your name to be sold! Hi all, Info from microsoft on cookies What you need to know about cookies Some Web sites store information in a small text file, called a "cookie," on your hard disk. Cookies contain information about you and your preferences. For example, if you inquire about a flight schedule at an airline's Web site, the site might create a cookie that contains your itinerary. Or it might only contain a record of which pages within the site you visited, to help the site customize the view for you the next time you visit. Only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while visiting a Web site, can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine your e-mail name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a Web site to create a cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it. Internet Explorer is set up to allow the creation of cookies; however, you can specify that you be prompted before a site puts a cookie on your hard disk, so you can choose to allow or disallow the cookie; or you can prevent Internet Explorer from accepting any cookies. You can specify different settings for different security zones. For example, you might want to allow Web sites to create cookies if they are in your Trusted sites or Local intranet zone, prompt you before creating cookies if they are in your Internet zone, and never allow cookies if they are in your Restricted sites zone.
I have received several pieces of e-mail since my post on Geocities pop up windows. Most of it has been good but some has taken me all wrong. The banner ad at the top of most Geocities pages cause no errors that I know of. What I am speaking of are the popup windows that contain the word popup in the URL, that people have to close to see your page. I have looked around the TnGenWeb and found that most of you have these turned off and replaced with Geoguide. Once again Geoguide causes no errors that I know of. If you want to see an example of a Geocities page that causes no errors check BFoster's at Anderson County http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/4916 And also Athol's Fosters in Dekalb County http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/3627/ These pages contain the geoguide in place of the full page popup. The Geoguide is actually quite useful with the navigation bar. But to say again I am not blasting Geocities, Xoom, Angelfire or any other free services that sell advertising. It's the way they make money as is my own Maynardville.Com. I did try to explain something without getting my point across. (My usual fate) To see a better description of computer crashes caused by Geocities popup pages and why they happen visit: http://freeweb.digiweb.com/entertainment/snicker/geopops.htm I'm not endorsing their opinions at all but they do explain the problem better than I can.
