Houston and Stewart Counties are alive and well. But now you are asking for a heckuva mouthful when you ask what the most "memorial things" were as a TnGenWeb host... there were so many success stories this year I couldn't begin (and a lotta fun too! Didn't we, Cher??), but I guess I could generalize and say it was the "explosion of sharing" that hit Stewart Co. The site doubled, tripled, multiplied.... the researchers got on a roll of sending in whatever they had and it has been quite an amazing year. The list has turned into a family atmosphere and such sharing and caring and swapping I never dreamed possible. Never ever a bad word outta ANYBODY...and plenty of caring. Houston is still taking baby steps as I just got that this fall, and Susan just came on board. Plans upcoming??? With apologies to Mr. King.... "I have a dream...." I have a dream of seeing ALL possible public records ONLINE and available to every researcher of both those counties at the touch of a button, the click of a mouse. I have a dream... oh yeah. I want those sites and those lists to be something more than facts and dates and names too.... I want them to reflect the "downhome feel and spirit". I want researchers to feel like they really HAVE come home when they find us... I don't want a cold site, or a boring site, or a "strictly business" site or a site like any other site (and heaven forbid a "bare bones site"). Has to reflect the mood of sitting on the porch downhome...has to have the stories and the tales, the old way of doing, the beliefs and values and heritage of the people, the swapping and the sharing..... has to have everything but the smell of homemade biscuits emanating from the monitor!!!!!! (and if we could figure out how to make that happen, you betcha that would happen TOO!!!!!) There ya are (probably more of a roll than ya wanted me to get on!!!) jan Houston Co. Being the first of the month it is roll call time again. I know some of you :::groan::: at the thought <VBG>. What i would like from you though also is to post what was one of the most memorial things that happened to you last year as a TNGenWeb host. And also, what are your plans and hope to accomplish as a host this year. I am just curious, that's all <G>. I guess my memorial moments from last year is the incorporation of the project as non-profit, being elected to the national board (I was totally shocked). Also the the great people who are with this project have made being associated with the TNGenWeb Project really super. Hmmm, oh, yes, *finally* the Greene County Genealogical Society agreeing to work with me on a few projects. I guess I'll have to replace those eye-teeth <VBG> This year I hope to be able to get more data online for Greene, of course, and later on this year I will have more time to do so. The folks on the Greene County mailing list are really great and sending in and posting a lot of information now, and this is wonderful. Okay, that's my donation for memorial moments of last year, and hopes for this year. Bridgett
I received a message from him (not a query), we are contemplating putting up a Researcher's for Hire type page for such folks. Please don't put it on your query page. I will write him personally and let him know our plans. These records are all kept in St Louise, MO. You can only get copies if you are of an immediate family. Why? These records are still covered under privacy laws. For some reason grandkids don't rate as immediate family. ...tim west... Mitzi Freeman wrote: > > Is it possible to obtain WWII military records of a veteran who fought and > died in the war? from Building An American Pedigree by Norman E. Wright BYU Press 1974 pp. 337- 343 "Modern reocrds concerning personnel who have been separated fromt eh service are deposited in the National Personnel Records Center at St. Louis, MO. The records are not open to public inspection, but genealogical data will be provided close relatives upon application. Suffiecient identifying information must be submitted with a request in order for the personnel to locate the proper records; usually required are the name, service number, branch of service, and approximate time period. Records pertaining to personnel who are currently on active duty or on reserve status remaines with their units -- gnerally "Headquarters Company" or equivalent.. The Veterans Administration also has records pertaining to servicemen and women who have been separated from the armed services where pensions, insurance, or other benefits are concerned. Such records are generally housed in the nearest regional office to the home of the veteran or his family. Again, the records are confidential the genealogical facts from the files might only be available when proper credentials are presented." Hi everyone, I'm looking for someone who is interested in helping me as Host of the Blount County page of the TNGenWeb. I am overwhelmed and behind with the work and need help. I'm willing to train someone. You would need to be familiar with HTML programing or comfortable about learning how. Denise
With Bridgett's blessing, I would like to introduce my new co-CC of Houston County, Susan Knight Gore. Susan has been a lot of help already with the building of this site and contributions to area researchers. I think we have a fine new addition to TnGenweb in the form of Susan, and I am certainly looking forward to working with her. Susan...this is as fine a group of people as you would ever want to be a part of anywhere... just really a sharing, caring bunch always willing to lend a hand, and very committed to online genealogy. There are a few of us ya have to just overlook...but then you are already well acquainted with the antics of Frick and Frack, alias Cher and myself.... jan Houston Co. Greetings all, Bridgett had asked me about researching Tennessee Land Grants. Rather than answer her privately, I am send this to the list. Perhaps this will help a few of you folks. First, the Tennessee State Library and Archives holds Tennessees land grants records and microfilms of them can be purchased. I believe that $20 per roll + $1 shipping is the price. There are *many* rolls. These records include the pre-statehood North Carolina grants because many NC records were copied eons ago by TN. The way to access them is to use the card file index at the library. Of course, if you live far from TSLA, this could prove difficult to access that index. Maybe one of our CCs who is connected with TSLA can answer about surname lookups, obtaining copies of individual grants, etc. Not my bailiwick. There is another way to do this. The genealogy bookmonger, Bryon Sistler has a series of seventeen paperback surname index books made directly from TSLAs card file index. http://www.mindspring.com/~sistler/tnland.html Note that while Bryon sells the books by alphabetical order, he is planning to publish a complete two volume hardbound set. He currently has a pre-publication discount. Looks like a shipping date around July. I will order the two volume set and might do an occasion lookup for our CCs, but *not* for the general public. But dont ask until late summer. Once the "proper" ancestor is found in the index, then photocopies of the grant may be ordered from TSLA. Bryon claims his index books holds 162,000 entries. How many microfilms would that require for full text originals? And at the $20 each. Oy vay! Fred
