    3. Jess, I had to go around my elbow to get to my thumb for this one, but finally found it. I believe the word "ranch" should be Ranch, but have been told in the past that these URL's are no longer case sensitive. She could have been uploading a new page at the time that we both were trying to get to it, or GeoCities was down momentarily. Try it again, if it doesn't work with the lower case "r" try upper case, if that works then I'll have to change the county list page to reflect it. Bridgett At 06:20 PM 11/16/97 -0500, Jesse K. 3. Thanks Bridgett- Yes, I have been in there editing today. And geocities is having some difficulty in their counters. (I dont think I have had THAT many hits to the page!<G>) Geocities has been doing some system upgrading and I dont think they have all the kinks out yet. I have been able to access my other pages where some of my relatives that have aol cant. But, usually when you cannot acces the page and get the "geocities cannot access" page, that's what we're doing....editing. Thanks for the message. Hope this explains everything. 1. Query Pages..
    2. Several Weeks ago I asked any county coordinator that wasn't doing their own query pages to contact me personally and ask me to maintain their page for them, if they wished me to continue. So far, I have six more counties start maintaining their own pages, out of my original "dirty dozen". There are still many counties that have county coordinators, that I am doing pages for. As I get new querys,I will send them, and their page to their county coordinator, and mark them off the list of counties I am doing. I don't subscribe to this list, so if you want to conact me, please E-Mail me at [email protected] As Always, Anne

    3. Hi Folks, The Benton County, Henry County & Danville Crossing WebSites suffered major crashes sometime on Friday. Some errant phone line or modem noise signals scrambled not only the whole site directory, but also most of the files & site access data during my last upload. It's a MESS!!! A complete site reload has not solve the problem, and the Site providers' "techies" don't work on the weekend. They just LOST a customer!!! I am in the process of moving the county sites to: http://home.att.net/~DLSNOW/benton.htm http://home.att.net/~DLSNOW/henry.htm http://home.att.net/~DLSNOW/danville.htm The above pages have been moved & are active, but none of the links work and most of the graphics & image maps are not working. This will take a few days to get them switched. Please make a note of the new URLs. I apologize for the inconvience. 3. Denise A couple of things. First you need to have a directory that is accessible via FTP. I don't know if we have such a directory on USIT or not. If not I can sponsor a few files on my ISP account. Second they should be in a zip (preferably a ZIPped and UNZIPPED format) ZIPped for those that can support it and will be a quicker download, UNZIPPED for those that don't support it but it can be displayed in text format. What happens is that on most servers if the extension is say .txt or .ged (anything but zips exe, and coms) it will be attempted to be displayed. Other servers have it set that unless it has an archive extension (i.e. zip, tz, gz, gc etc) it will be displayed. Jack E. 3. I don't know about the allowability issues...but the technical issue is: make it a .zip file, then it'll kick to download. Also by zipping you shorten their download time....but you probably should add a link for where to download winzip or pkunzip, in case the person doesn't have it. megan -- PLEASE NOTE URLS BELOW: [email protected] * [email protected] Megan Zurawicz, National Coordinator USGenWeb http://www.usgenweb.net -- http://www.usgenweb.org

    1. Changes and questions
    2. Bridgett Smith
    3. The following changes have been made to the County List page. Blount -- new URL* Claiborne -- new URL* Dickson -- removed ALT URL (per Linda's request) Hamblen -- new URL* Johnson -- new URL* Lawrence -- new URL* Unicoi -- added asst county coordinator *the new URL is just a reflection that these county's main pages are now in their own directory. A redirect page should be in place for those counties for the people who have bookmarked the old site. Changes on the main Query page: Dickson -- took out ALT address (per Linda's request) Lawrence -- new URL* *Lawrence now has it's main query page in the Lawrence directory. Please, if you know of any other changes that need to be made notify me. If you are in need of a redirect page, I have a generic page set up where I can just insert the appropriate county name and URL. There are several counties that have been adopted, and have been for awhile, but have no pages yet. We need to get these pages up as soon as humanly possible. If you find that you can not take care of a county please let us know so we might find someone else who is willing and/or waiting to take on that county. I don't know if anyone has noticed or not, but our main entry page has registered over 200,000 visitors, very close to reaching 201,000. Congratulations goes out to everyone in their effort to make TNGenWeb one of the best States to visit in the USGenWeb project (my opinion of course <G>). Let's keep up the good work with updating pages regularly, getting those queries uploaded in a timely fashion (errr, I am way behind ::sigh::), and enjoyable for those who visit the first time and all the returnees. Hint: Nothing is more frustrating than a bad link, please make sure all your links work. I am trying, as well as Billie and Anne, to keep the links working on the main pages. Your help in advising us of any changes that are located on those pages. Someone has uploaded a graphic to the main directory in CAPS, this won't work unless your link is in caps also. The graphic's name is COURTHO~1.GIF (that's how it appears on my FTP client, I don't know the full name of this graphic). If the person who uploaded this graphic would let me know the full name of it, I can go in and change it to lower case. Congratulations to all of you for your good work, let's keep it up <G> Bridgett Bridgett Edwards Smith [email protected] ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~* The Bible Family: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bible Home Page: http://www.wizard.com/~bascs/mypage.htm Greene Co TN: http://www.usit.net/tngenweb/greene

    2. Denise Waterworth
    3. Hi everyone! I've got a programing question. How do you setup downloadable links? What I'd like to do is have a page of links that when you click on them you can download the file (a gedcom type file) that I have uploaded for others to access. Some people in the county have a lot of information on their families and are willing to share information with others. I thought if I could have a downloadable gedcom available that might help. Is there a space concideration? Is there a limit on how much space each county can use on usit.net? I could still use how it is done so I could set up my homepage with downloadable files. Denise Waterworth P.S. If you have any links to Blount County please check and make sure it is this one http://www.usit.net/tngenweb/blount as we have moved all the files into the blount directory and I'm no longer at http://www.usit.net/tngenweb/blount.htm

    3. I am a regional co-ordinator. Because of the way my counties send me their files (we use a naming scheme to id each update pkt. If interested in more I will respond one-to-one) I also have a complete mirror of each counties' site. This serves as an "off-site" backup. So in case of a real "disaster" any of the my counties could be uploaded to another server at a moments notice. Everyone spends a lot of time on their site trying to get everything just so. An onsite and off-site backup is just good practice for that occasional mishap. It also helps when someone gets carried away with those housecleaning chores and delete too much. Jack E. It has crossed my mind that with the downfall of dsenter.com due to the weather, and the loss of some pages that were on the server (mainly the FAQ page and a few others), that this might be a timely reminder to keep a backup copy of your current pages either on your own HD or a floppy. I am sure most of you do, but just in case there was just one of you out there that isn't doing this and this tip saves some heartache, I'm sure you don't mind this posting.
