Thanks, Jack! I'll add you to the list. Right now, I think it will be classroom-oriented. But, we're working on development of a CD-ROM training tool for Tennessee Genealogy research, using interactive gaming as the structure. Know any good programmers who'd just love to be part of it, with love and affection and cookies as their payment until the thing is sold? UT-Knoxville is offering genealogy classes next semester -- both "regular" research and Internet-based. The University would like to contact genealogical societies in East Tennessee about getting copies of the organizations' mailing lists of "local" members. I offered to assist in contacting the societies, and it would be great if I could do it via e-mail rather than a trainload of long distance calls. If you have the e-mail address of an officer of a society in a county within a reasonable driving distance of Knoxville (say 60 miles), would you please forward it to me so I can get in touch with the organization? UT wants to send the mailings out by the end of this month, so I need to do this as quickly as possible. Thanks for your time and assistance. I'll post an announcement to the list as soon as I have the full details about the classes. <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> Billie R. What I would like to know is, what authority do you have to relieve Billie and appoint Bridgett? I know what your title is but I don't see where you have the authority to do something like this. I thought each State was independent of one another and of the USGenWeb as long as they followed the guidelines set out by USGenWeb. Do the County Coordinators not have a say about who is fired and who is hired? And about what goes on in our State. As much as I think of Anne Hood and I thank her for all she has done for me, I disagree with her about the "Monarchy" or "Dictatorship" as someone else said. I spent 27 years of my life in the U.S. Army to preserve our freedom of speech, and our choice to elect our leaders, in everything. I think that each CC should have been consulted about this before it took place. Not to get up in the morning and check my e-mail to find that a coup has taken place. Was Billie even told that it was going to happen? It didn't sound like it from her reply in her "Administrative details" message. I guess it was a shock to her as it was to me. Like Anne, I wouldn't like the job either but would like to have had a say in it. >This is not a step taken lightly, but Billie's communication problems >have come to be nearly insurmountable. I've spent a month trying to >work out the problems with her, but either she isn't receiving my mail >or not responding to it, more often than not. I will be the first to admitt that Billie hasn't been there a lot of times when I needed her, and not answered the many messages that I sent to her. I had to rely on someone else. (Mostly Anne Hood.) My Dekalb County page was the third page in the State to go up in June of 1996. If it hadn't been for Billie it wouldn't have been done. When I started I was new to the Computer, new to the internet and new to Genealogy. I have since learned my way around the internet, do pretty well with the computer and learned HTML on my own and am now maintaining my own personal page as well as the County page. Any way I think that Billie got a raw deal the way it has worked out. Or appears that way to me. >Billie has done a great deal of really magnificent work with this >project, which I would be the last one to ever want forgotten. Yes I believe that Bridgett will do a good Job. That was not my concern. It is the way it has been handled. I know something needed to be done, but not this way. As several others have indicated I would like to be able to upload my own files. Well I have had my say. I guess I will be the next one to be fired. If so, So be it. I've just been scanning all the messages being posted about the State Coordinator position. To some it's a "bloodless" coup; as for me, I'm not concerned. I feel sure that the person named is well qualifed. However, we County Coordinators ought to have more say in who gets the position. Democracy has made our country a great place to live - we ought to incorporate it into TNGenWeb. We County Coordinators could rebel against and refuse to work with the new person, but I don't think that would do much for TNGenWeb - such action could well jeopardize the project. Let me propose that we move toward a more democratically run organization as follows: I move that we accept the newly named person. I further move that a month from now we have an election for assistants to the State Coordinator (SC) - at least two. These assistants would work closely with the SC, helping in the decision making, and when necessary, filling in for the SC. Anyone wishing to be on the ballot for assistant would submit their qualifications on this forum - this to be the only campaigning allowed. I further move that we have an election one year from now for the State Coordinator position. Those assistants which we elected would have gained the knowledge and some experience that would give them give them a valuable qualification for the the SC position should they decide to run in the election. However, any County Coordinator or interested person could choose to enter the race because of the way our election would be carried out (as I further move in the next paragraph). I move that in the election one year from now the person receiving the most votes for SC be considered to be elected as such. The next highest vote would be elected as an assistant, and the next and the next, until the number of assistant positions are filled. Anyone else have any ideas? Jim Pulley Wilson Co. CC

Hey All, I seem to be getting a late start on all of the changes about the state coordinator position and the USIT issues. I think I am definately going to have to find a new email and ISP (things seem to be behind). I first want to say thanks to Billie for all of her hard work and making the TNGenWeb what is today. <CLAP> <CLAP> Second, today I sent an email to Billie, Anne and Bridgett about some features that I saw on the USIT internet site that may be of an advantage to us. Since things have changed, I will recap and send to the whole group. I know that everyone has their own way of doing things and coding their pages, but for those of us (and there may only be a few), that use Microsoft Frontpage to maintain their pages, USIT now offers Frontpage Extension support. What this means is that we could use Frontpage to develop html pages that have forms used for queries/ posting information and AUTOMATICALLY update the HTML pages. Frontpage has an "autobot"/"webbot" (something like that), that is already coded and handles form generation and maintenance easily. There are many other extensions that we could take advantage of... One that might be possible is... (for users of Frontpage), we might be able to update our own web pages WITHOUT uploading files to the server via FTP (frontpage can handle this for you). (I am not sure exactly what all is involved with this, so it might be more trouble than it is worth). I am sorry about the run on sentences and this run on email, if any one wants to know more about the different extensions, I will be glad to talk with them. But I guess to sum it all up, on MY WISH LIST, I would like to be able to use the Frontpage extensions and autobots. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help out. Thanks a bunch! This is certainly good news. I just wish the Webmaster had given me the option for "new configuration" during our ongoing correspondence over the past few months. That would have alleviated a large number of the headaches we've all had, and I might have been able to invest more time in site development and less in researching ways to get around some of our constraints -- like access to county directories directly by county hosts. Jim Cole and I have spent a long time researching ways to work it out, while maintaining the security on the server with only one user account. I'll be very interested in the options, since my personal pages and many of the users I support are on USIT's servers. OK Finally finished the whole thread. Boy my systems picks the best times to go KAAAAPLUCK. Not sure about a lot of things at this time but want to thank Billie for all she has done. She, with the help of a few, gave birth and raised the TNGenWeb Project. In the same spirit I am willing to help where I can. I must be open however to let you know that my personal future is unclear. I can definitely promise support and assistance until about Sept. After that point there may be some major changes that could take me out of the picture for a couple of months. With that in mind I am willing to do whatever is needed to keep the project alive. As for server space I think this brings up a very important subject in that the project needs to be located on a server where space is available and availability is not dependent on anyone person. I me who knows the state coordinator good me hit my a train the very next day. This project is too important to let wither away. In the same mind it should be structured in a ways that allows for perpetuity In closing I would like to offer Billie a standing ovation for all her hard work & dedication. -----Original Message----- From: Bridgett Smith <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, December 03, 1997 8:53 PM Subject: Re: State Coordinator >Leave it to David to put a smile on our faces. > >LOL > >At 02:30 AM 12/4/97 +0000, David L. I concur.. This would be the biggest "one" improvement that could be made. It certainly would free a lot of time for the RC's to do more worthwhile things.
