    3. We have over 110 people involved in the TNGenWeb project, hosts, co-hosts, helpers, etc. Of those 110, 26 replied to the request for a name. Mary didn't you write to me and indicate that I was to "make it so" regarding the chat mailing list? Change your mind? 3. You know the old saying: You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time (or something close to that). The new list was created because many people requested it, and after the announcement of it's creation I got many thank yous for doing so. I am not setting a precedence here by having 2 discussion lists for a state project, their are other state projects that have them, and only one of those lists is a required list, the one pertaining to announcements. Bridgett On 11 Jul 98 at 9:00, TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > Bridgett, I don't see any need for another list. We have our TNGenWeb list > that everyone is subscribed to. 1. [TNGEN-L] Incorporation (nonprofit)
    2. Fred Smoot
    3. Greetings fellow CCs, As our Tennessee Project enters its third year, it seems apparent that the project has grown enough that a small amount organization might be in order. As individuals, we may say we are here to honor our ancestors or because we love genealogy or because we have an obsession with HTML, but whatever the reason, our product is online genealogical information which we contribute freely to the general public. Our state project is a good project, it is getting better and better all the time. The dedicated efforts of, you, the CC Volunteers built this project and it is the efforts of you CC Volunteers that keep this project healthy and growing. Any organizational effort needs to respect both the product and those who give of themselves to create that product. In as much as the CCs donate their time in a totally volunteer nonprofit environment with absolutely no financial gain for themselves, any proposed organization structure must support and protect the freedoms that rightful belong to those CCs. A velvet glove approach is indicated, not that of an iron fist. Organization must not create a situation where the "Page Police" are looking down our necks. But the project does need some organization to protect the work we do and we need a "legal" organization to which we can "will" our work when we leave the project. Bridgett, Nancy and I have been working on a Charter that can be submitted to the Tennessee Department of State. It is a Charter for a nonprofit corporation. We would not be the first StateGenWeb to incorporate. KansasGenWeb has recently incorporated as a nonprofit. After the basic Charter is approved, we (all CCs), would have the opportunity to contribute to a fair and equitable set of Bylaws. Next, the Bylaws would need to be approved by a majority of the CCs. We would then be governed by the rules WE create, rather than being subject to outside intervention. Please note, there is nothing in this act of our incorporation that would change our relationship with USGenWeb Project. As long as the USGenWeb Project met OUR standards of free online nonprofit genealogy, there would probably never be a need for change. Before submitting the Charter, we need to hear from you. Please post your reply to this list so we all can share. We need to remain a team, and keep our three stars shining above the rest. Fred Smoot, a State Rights Westerner

    3. We all have gotten messages from folks who are just starting out in their research. As the SC I get several messages a week pertaining to "where do I go from here?" There is a mailing list called GEN-NEWBIE-L and know some of the people who subscribe to it -- not as newbies, but there to help them with their problems and/or questions. I have recently started telling people who write to me about this mailing list and have gotten a few thanks for the advise. I didn't know how many of you knew of this mailing list, but thought if you didn't it would be nice to know. You subscribe to it by sending a message to GEN-NEWBIE-L-request@rootsweb.com the word subscribe in the the body of the message ONLY nothing else. 1. [TNGEN-L] Humphreys County Update
    2. I have recently added the 1820 Census for Humphreys County. It is available through the efforts of a wonderful volunteer we have who is David Hooper. He has typed the 1820, 1830 and 1840...soon the rest of the years will be done too!!! I hope his ancestors migrated on to Perry County after that! Grin! Also, I would like to thank Bridgett for her help with this...ah, what a gem she is! Last but not least, Dave Worsham from Giles County--he helped me tremendously also. NOW, a word of warning...the 1820 census is still in progress. By that I mean it is a very large file which requires a long download time..about 1.5 minutes...(on my machine). I am in the process of splitting it into 3 files. I hope to have that done this weekend. David Hooper is creating a name index to go with it so it should be very functional when we have it done! But for now, it works...which is a miracle in itself if you knew how much I don't know about html! >From dreary (today) San Jose Alisa Researching: McKeel NC TN KY OH Horner TN Cox WV OH Hutchison WV OH MO KS Stanley OH Benner OH Beck GA AL Would love to share! **************************************************************************** CoHost: Humphreys County TNgenweb site: Http://www.tngenweb.usit.net/humprheys CoHost: Perry County TNgenweb site: Http://www.netease.net/perry

Hate to bow out this early in the game but the great outdoors is beckoning and I am off on a ten day camping trip. Cheryl (the co-listowner finally said "I do"!), is in charge and any problems should be reported to her at adamscd@ne.infi.net . Have fun, and I will catch up on your postings when I get back. By popular demand (as in people were wanting to have a logo that they could put on their pages to show support for the USGenWeb and to advertise the project to their friends) a new page has been put up on the National USGenWeb Site. Please see: http://www.usgenweb.org/friends/friends.html Those people who want to display the logo showing that they are a friend of the USGenWeb, can also register their pages on which the logo will be displayed. The URL of the logo will then be displayed on the friends list at: http://www.usgenweb.org/friends/friendslist.html We also have a new section for success stories. We have been collecting them and sharing them amongst ourselves for a little while, but they belong to you all. Donald L. 3. Mitzi Freeman, host for Loudon and Campbell counties, has graciously agreed to become one of our Regional Coordinators. She will be taking the counties listed under my name on the Regional Coordinator Page (http://www.tngenweb.org/adoptco/regional.htm. I'd like to thank Mitzi for volunteering to do this for the project. The counties effected are: Anderson Blount Campbell Carter Claiborne Grainger Hancock Hawkins Jefferson Johnson Knox Sullivan Union Washington If I am working with any of you hosts on a special project and/or problem I will continue to do so. Also, the County Host Guideline page has been changed. You might want to take a look at the page. No more new requirements, just updating old information, like our URL, and the fact that the TNGenWeb autobot is now working (it was still saying "coming soon"). I tried to put a notation when something has been changed with the date of change underneath the change. ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Bridgett Smith TNGenWeb State Coordinator http://www.tngenweb.org/

    3. Several of you have received this message, however for those who haven't you might want to look at this website, see if your county is mentioned and if so you might want to link back to them. The genealogical society went to great lengths to link to the various areas, states and counties, within this article. A link back would be nice. Bridgett ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- From: Kirk Stephens <kirks@wcu.campus.mci.net> Subject: Families from Jackson County, NC Greetings East Tennessee Folk; My name is Kirk Stephens. I am webmaster for the Jackson County (NC) Genealogical Society. I wanted to share a couple of items with you regarding some SURNAMES that we have in common. As you probably know, many families from Jackson county traveled to your TN counties in the early and mid-nineteenth century. The cemeteries of Jackson County are filled with names that are common in your counties. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that one of our local historians has written an article about the migration of Jackson county families. Your counties are mentioned and I have created links to your pages. Perhaps you will have time to view the article, and if you see fit, mention us on your LINKS page. I hope that maybe we'll be able to put some researchers together.
