I have a strange problem again. There is a lady on my mailing list who tries very hard to be helpful. She sends things in from time to time and has been a great help getting the chatroom off the ground. Problem is she sent me some cemetery lists the other day. When I examined the file at the bottom it said Copyright 1997 Union County Historical Society. I know I can't use the lists because of ill feelings between myself and the Historical Society. (They don't like me giving away information on my site) They would never give me permission to use it. She had no idea of copyright or anything. How do you handle these situations? I really don't want to offend her. Chip Union County TnGenWeb

As I have stated before, I believe we as a State have all we can do to take care of ourselves (more people - more squabbling). USGenWEb is just a meeting place for everyone to get to the states to do their genealogy. How would the entity of US protect us? If I put up a major piece of work, I do want it to be protected. Would USGenWeb sue for me if my work was stolen and published? Fred has made some good points. Could we do a write in vote? Fred for NC? Not running for anything, just trying to work on my page, Judy
Chip: I have the same problem in Greene County. People are submitting wills, but they are the abstracts from Goldene Burgner's Book (you can tell, it's not a complete will). I don't put those online. I write back to the folks thank them very much for their submission, however since it is taken from a book that is copyrighted I can not publish it. Now if they find it on a microfilm in full text somewhere, then I will be glad to upload it. I've had no one scream at me yet. <VBG> You might want to suggest to the lady if she can get a microfilm of the WPA cemetery listings of that cemetery and transcribe it from that you will be utterly grateful and will gladly upload it and give her full credit. You'd be surprised what you get back in the mail -- somehow it works. LOL. Bridgett On 12 Jul 98 at 23:00, TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > I have a strange problem again. The folks handling the software for the mailing lists at rootsweb.com, after requests from listowners, have made it so any messages going to lists with attachments and/or HTML coding in the messages will be kicked back to the submitter. They will not be posted to the mailing list. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff
Bridgett, Fort Pillow is in Tipton County. Perhaps that host could help. There is a prison there now. I agree with Jess about the controversy over Forrest. As we were taught over here in West Tennessee, Forrest stopped the killing of the innocent Blacks when he found out about it. As you well know (VBG) he couldn't control all the hot heads in his command instantly - but he DID stop it as soon as he found out. Very much like the fact that probably all the Yankee generals weren't supportive of the Yankee soldiers destroying the South, - burning farms, killing innocent Whites, raping and stealing. Hi all, I think it is very important to have a separate list for discussing (arguing) the merits/methods of organizing TNGenWeb. Over at NCGenWeb, they are trying to elect a new state coordinator right now and it has turned into a nightmare (so I hear). There are many people here on TNGEN-L who do *not* want this list to become political. We should respect their wishes. Some cc's in NC have quit over the turmoil there. I suspect if we restart the politics here some of our beloved cc's will resign. We ought to take our "chat" over to TNCHAT-L and leave this list in peace. That's what Bridgett created that list for. Anyone who wants to engage in the fun is welcome to ask Bridgett to be put on the chat list. I think it is unfortunate that we even have to have this discussion here. Can't we agree on anything? :-)) My 2 cents, George of Lincoln On 11 Jul 98 at 9:08, TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > You know the old saying: > > You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't > please all of the people all of the time (or something close to > that). > > The new list was created because many people requested it, and after > the announcement of it's creation I got many thank yous for doing so. > I am not setting a precedence here by having 2 discussion lists for a > state project, their are other state projects that have them, and > only one of those lists is a required list, the one pertaining to > announcements. > > Bridgett > > > On 11 Jul 98 at 9:00, TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Bridgett, I don't see any need for another list. OK Bridgett !!! What are you trying to do, start a "race war" ? Are things getting too quiet for you :>) VBG, etc. Everyone knows something about Ft. Pillow. (I thought) That's where General N.B. George and all, To answer your question, no, I did not send to the wrong list by mistake. But yes, Bridgett did set up the TNCHAT-L list so that we could discuss things like incorporation. However, as you point out, I mailed to the TNGEN-L list. The reasons for this are: 1. The TNGEN-L list reaches all TNGenWeb volunteers. As Bridgett's latest message states, there are 110 subscribers on the official list. It is necessary that all important messages, announcements, calls for votes, etc, *always* be posed to the TNGEN-L list. 2. With only 26 CCs on the TNCHAT-L list, we need to increase those numbers so it can function well as a discussion list for us. I do not want important issues to be hidden on the TNCHAT-L without our folks on TNGEN-L knowing that the issue is on TNCHAT-L and that they have the option and right to subscribe. I originally suggested a second list (which is now established as TNCHAT-L). I did this because there are some CCs who do not want to be inundated with the same redundant opinion from the same author. Not your opinion, not my opinion, not over and over. We respect the wishes of the CCs who would rather do genealogy, their county pages and their special projects and NOT want to receive overwhelming opinions. However, from the git go, Bridgett's stated position has been; whatever we do, it will be democratic. Right now, my posting to TNGen-L is the most democratic way. I would be pleased to move the discussion to the TNCHAT-L list. Lets have some more subscribers so more CCs are represented. Once we get past the incorporation issue, we will be able to use the list for discussions about county records, cemetery preservation, dogtrot architecture, and good ol' southern cooking. What do you propose for those CCs that don't approve of this incorporation? What will be the status of their pages? Will there be two USGenWeb pages for that particular TN county, one sanctioned by your incorporation and one not sanctioned? I believe the National Project is moving in the direction of internal state controls as it has basically always been. It is trying to set up or lead in the direction of setting up some sort of grievance procedures for those who come into conflict with state guidelines. Why bring up this issue now? Why not wait to see how the National Project gets thru the election process and see if the bylaws pass before going on this route? It may be of interest to some to know that the Page Police, as you call them, were an idea that came out of the Kentucky project. While I do believe we need some consistancy to show we are members of the same project, I see no need of page police. As the State Coordinator for North Dakota and Regional Coordinator for West Tennessee, I rarely 'police' my CCs pages. I let them know when a link isn't working or make suggestions to help them improve the visitor's experience when viewing their pages. I've made mistakes in doing this with some CCs who didn't even know I was the RC for their region and from misreading pages but I do mean to be constructive and helpful to them instead of being a pain. As a CC myself, I do appreciate others who comment about my pages. I realize that I see my pages with rose colored glasses and need someone else with a different view to tell what works and what doesn't. Bridgett, A response of 26 out of 110 isn't terribly low (that's almost 25%) concerning what name the TN CCs preferred for the official name. But this thread was stopped shortly after it started. Yes, I did indicate for you to "make it so" because you wanted the TNGen-l list to be for announcements, but it was your idea to have another list to discuss other issues and that's better than nothing. I said to "make it so" because a while back you said another list for discussions was being arranged and it just wasn't happening. Isn't the state-coord-l list there for the SCs to discuss problems, issues and how other SCs handle any number of situations that come up among other things? Having an open discussion is far better than private e-mails back and forth and it would seem to me a lot more constructive. In other words, my preference is and always has been discussion on the TNGen-l list, but if the majority of the CCs prefer it take place on the TNChat-l, so be it. But please, lets not get sidetracked from a discussion of incorporation whatever list its on. Bridgett, I don't see any need for another list. We have our TNGenWeb list that everyone is subscribed to. I thought that this list was to discuss anything that goes on with the TNGenweb group. If anyone is interested in chatting on IRC, I will be online (if I can get online and stay that way) tonight at 5 PM PDT (8 EDT, 7CDT, 6 MDT). I will be on irc.rootsweb.com, port 6667, channel #tngenweb If you do not have an IRC client (like mIRC -- I don't know what the most popular one application is for a MAC is called), you can go to http://www.hotfiles.com and enter in the search field IRC and it will take you to their list of files. FWIW mIRC is very easy to set up, you just about only have to open it up, enter a few things that are necessary and you are on your way. I chose this way of communicating real time, as it is the most cross OS platform way of talking in real time. You folks on AOL, can use it also. Mitzi Freemen indicated that you can d/l what you need out of AOL's software file. If you need help, she said she would help those on AOL her e-mail address is setraveler@aol.com. Once signed onto irc.rootsweb.com, you will type in /join #tngenweb and it will take you to the channel. Hope to see several of you folks there. Thanks Jess: Needless to say I have a ton on my mind -- and since the humidity is up here in Las Vegas Valley, connection problems have been my stable mate for the last 2 days. I heard of the name, just couldn't place it. I got a query from someone quote: "Could you tell me please where I may find information on Fort Pillow?" So instead of racking my brains at the present time, I decided to ask. Bridgett On 11 Jul 98 at 14:53, TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > OK Bridgett !!! > What are you trying to do, start a "race war" ? Those county coordinators that handle their own county directory of the Archives might be having a problem accessing the archives_ftp and archives_html directory right now. That's because there was a security problem, and we are currently working on it. In the meantime, the state Archives file managers/archivists have been asked to provide to me a list of those who should have access to county directories for their state. Dale Schneider will then set the "permissions" appropriately. Fred and Athol, I too agree we need to discuss all kinds of issues regarding the direction the TNGenWeb is going. Its been months since the subject of incorporation was brought up, but nothing has come of it. It seems to me there is interest in the subject of incorporation and it should be persued and I see no need to wait for the outcome of the elections. I think its been put off long enough. I also agree the discussion should be on the TNGenWeb list because it affects all of us. If the responses to what name we should/should not use is any indication of interest, then a good many of the CCs are indeed interested.
