Hello. This is my first posting to the Franklin list. I am researching the BURRESS line and possible connections in Franklin County. In 1823 the Tennessee legislature passed an act regarding a turnpike road in several counties. The act lists a possible ancestor of mine in Franklin County: "Be it enacted that Hercules Jones and Jesse Grason be, and they are hereby authorized to cut out and open a turnpike road, beginning at the foot of said mountain, near the upper end of Marion County, running acorss said mountain the nearest and best way to Captain Burriss' in Franklin County." John Briggs, Jonce Laster and James Roberts were named commissioners of the road. Do any of these references sound familiar to anyone? Any idea if Capt. Burriss was John Burriss, or possibly another person? Thanks for any assistance! Chuck Burress Galax, Virginia CBurress@tcia.net
