Odie, She married into the Matthews line. Did you mean you had seen Elmyra's maiden name as Choate? Gerri, I we probably should be looking for these SURNAMES for Elmyra in either Russell Co KY or Fentress Co TN, as Joseph Sr was living in Russell Co KY in 1810 census. Don't know when Joseph Jr (Elmyra's husband) came to Fentress Co, whether before or after he was married. 1850 and 1860 census has all Joseph Jr's children born in TN, but 1870 and 1880 has Thomas, Mary, Elisha and Jonathan being born in KY and the later ones starting with Nancy, born in TN 1838. This would place Joseph Jr and Elmyra in Ky until about 1836 and in TN by 1838. Chances are, Joseph Jr married in KY before January 1, 1830 and lived there six or more years before moving to TN. So, the SURNAME of Elmyra would logically be someone who came through Russell Co from NC since Elmyra is said to be born in NC. Does this make sense?
