She named her firstborn son William Shade. When he was 16 he was gored by a bull in the eye. It took three days to go by horseback to Nashville for him to be looked at by a doctor. He lost his vision in that eye. My grandmother always spoke very highly of her father and must have loved and respected him very much. She would tell me about the times she would go with him around the county on business and help him keep records. He had been sherriff at one time. He died very soon after I was born and my grandmother who was helping my mother take care of me had to leave to go to the funeral. In the book Autobiography of Rev. A.B.
