Pat, I meant to reply to your inquiry sooner, but my mail was lost, and now was just able to retrieve my mail a few days ago, and also I was out of town for Christmas. In regards to James Winningham, he was brn 29 Feb 1756 VA. According to my sources he is the brother to Richard Winningham Sr b. abt 1758 VA. Both remove to NC where Richard dies in Randolph Co. NC. Their father is listed as James Winningham. Nothing else is mentioned about this James Winningham Sr. Researching the Winninghams in VA, I find a John Winningham who recieved land in Jul 1738 in Amelia Co. on lower side of Winninghams Creek. Anone know the identity of this John Winningham? He has to be born at least before 1718. Found this at library in Salisbury: James Winningham Those of us who research the Winningham family can only wonder and speculate upon the time and place of debarkation of those first Winninghams. One conjecture is that they landed at a port on one of the tidal rivers of Virginia, leaving their port of entry to settle in the interior. In the early and middle 18th century the Winningham name, spelled a number of ways, appears in a number of counties through the deed books, quit rent and poll tax records. Our chief interest is with the James Winningham. The "family tradition" as written by Alma Winningham in 1929, states that James was born in 1756 in Virginia. No mention is made of his parentage. He later moved to Granville County, North Carolina, where he was living at the time of the Revolutionary War. He served two enlistments and received a Rev. War Claim of $20.00 per annum. This document was dated 16 March 1835. James Winningham married Sarah Nichols in Iredell Co. NC on 13 June 1792 or 1793. No record of this marriage has been found. In Sarah Winningham's claim of a widow's pension, she stated she was uncertain of the year because the family Bible has been lost. James received a license to operate an "ordinary" 18 February 1801.James and Sarah Winningham had a family, but the names of only two of their children are known. The oldest was Gaines Winningham, born 11 Feb. 1794 who married Nancy Moffitt. The other child was Rachel who married Thomas Gordon. The children of Gaies and Nancy (Moffitt) Winninham are of particular interest because a number of modern day researchers are descended from these children. The oldest was Adam, born 1817, who married Dorinda Brown, Rebecca born 1819, married John Moon, William born 1821 married Sarah Allred, James Newton born 1823 married Nancy Fox, Francis born 1825 marriage unknown, Sebert Francis Marion born 1826 married Laura Ann Lyndown, Jesse born 1829 married Elizabeth Campbell, Winci born 1837 married Isaac N. Rollins, Sarah E. born 1839 married Zachary Williams. The census records throughout the 19th century show the Winninghams to have scattered all across the south and into the mid-west. Many of these Winninghams are thought to be siblings, cousins and descendants of James Winningham.
