Henen, Squire Angel's last name had several spellings: 1n 1822 his last name was spelt Angelea, 1830/33 Angel, 1840, Angla, 1850 Angely. I have, off and on been trying to research this Squire Angel b. abt 1799 from NC. Somewhere I found "The Anglea Family in America". It explains that the pronuciation an'jel was derivd from French 'engel', meaning 'a mesenger' and the latter part of the name 'lea was probably added after the family migrated to England. A'lea is an old English field or eadow where the family may have lived, hence the derivation of the latter part of the name. Th report explains that this is only an assumption and may have some entirely different meaning. Bardsley's Dicionary of English and Welsh surnames lists 'Angel', Angell', Angle', Angela' and Angelina.' French,Latin, and Greek: ('angele or 'engel, 'angle and 'angelos) respectively. In trying to identify his parents and his place of origin, I know that since both Squire Angel and his wife Mary Polly Storie were from NC, I believe that Squire Angel may have met Mary Pollie Storie in Wilkes Co., NC were Mary Polly was from. Again, there could be a possibility that Squire Angel was in Ky when he met Mary Polly before he came to Overton aft. 1820. Her father, Joshua was in Ky before he moved to Overton Co. before 1820. I noticed that Squire Angel is not in Overton Co., nor is Mary Polly for she is not in the HH of Joshua in 1820. They are apparently md abt 1819 according to the birth date of Catherine Angel b. 1820. I cannot locate him yet in 1820. They could have md in either NC, KY, or in TN. I have yet to find any documentation. Any thoughts or feedback? We believe that Angely is an Italian name. I am wondering about Italians in those TN mountains. Does anyone know anything about this possibility? Hi all, I have begun researching my son-in-law's family. He & his family have remained in the Franklin, Macon Co. area of N.C. His grandmother told me about some of the Angel's going to Tn., but she knew nothing more. She was not into genealogy. Do you think this is a possible connection? Thanks, Ann
