Hi List While going through some old papers. trying to down size..but just hate throwing things away that looks intresting. My father got out of the navy, came to Pall Mall to get Mother and me to live in Devonia, Anderson County. We had moved February 1946. I found an old letter my mother wrote to Granny Delk. It was written on the bcak andhalf the front of a bill that that Sgt York sent to her. It was dated 1-23-1946. The letter head below Sergent Alvin C York & Son Dealers in General Merchandise and Groceries "York's Special " Bolted Meal What would "Bolted Meal be???? Mother owed him $39.59. I would expect it was a lot in 1946. She mentioned a WHEELER and FRANK. Suppose it was first names. Also, EDD DELK. She was very upset because they had lost her can of lard. Milly, That was very interesting. My Grannie used to say she wished she had some bolted meal. She said it was meal that was ground very, very fine. She used to sell it in her little Grocery Store on Harmon Smith Road in Alpine. That little store is still standing and they have planted tons of beautiful flowers all around it. It is so charming. My Papa had built on to the back of it before they left Alpine. If you take corn meal and grind it in a blender, you will have bolted meal. Thanks for bringing back that memory Milly. My heart clings to them stories. Milly, I think Bolted Meal was a finely crushed and sifted meal. It was made from corn, however, not wheat, which would make flour. I'm sure that the "York's Special" Bolted Meal was ground in the York grist mill. The mill did grind wheat to make flour too. But this required a different set of grinding wheels, called rollers, that ground the wheat into the very fine powdery flour. I'm not sure, but Bolted Meal could have been used as a substitute for flour by those who couldn't or didn't grow wheat.
