I have been trying to identify the mother of Wm Cooney Johnson b. 1861/62. I know her first name is Mary according to 1860 census. Wms father Wm Marion Johnson is killed in 1682. By 1880 Wm Cooney Johnson is in the HH of Wm Stepp. What happened to his mother, Mary? Is she deceased by this time? I have seen on a couple of websites, his Mother is listed as Mary Stepp, d/ John Stepp. But the problem I have with this is that Mary, age 15 is still at home in 1860. Wm cooney Johnsons' parents Wm and a Mary are listd in 1860 with a child, Elizabeth 1 yr old. This Mary is abt 24 yrs old. I dot think this Mary, w/o Wm Johnson, is the d/o John Stepp. Can someone please help on this matter? Thanks! If you would send me a few more details or dates maybe I can locate them. I'm a member of the Beaty Project 2000 [BP2000] and would certainly recommend you join that group if you are interested in Beaty research. It is a group of researchers of all spellings of the Beaty name and they have been gathering all the info on that surname for several years. It is free and easy to join. Here is the website: _http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/main.htm_ (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/main.htm) My Beaty family line is from Alexander & Catharine Beaty who lived just across the state line in Clinton Co., KY. They are directly related to many of the Beatys in Fentress Co. They are all part of BP2000 lineage 2, but have been broken up into several branches to help us research them. I don't see your Mary Elizabeth right away, but there are a number of girls named Mary E. in several of the branches. I can't find it on any maps I have. My Great-grandmother Rosa Lee Pryor and family were from there. Her father was John Reed Pryor, and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Beaty from Grimsley, Fentress Co. I know where that is.
