    1. Re: [TNFENTRE] Preston Huff Killed by William Brooks?
    2. Martha There are lots and lots of indictments for murder, theft, at least one for treason, and Pleasant D. Pile was indicted for "harboring guerrillas." It was a bloody country after the war, so bad that the governor had to send troops keep the peace. The records seem to be incomplete and I think most all of the records burned in 1905, but O. C. Conatser had copied a number of the records and the county bought them back from him after the fire and therefore we do have some records. Shird and James Pile were indicted a number of times for one murder or the other, one case was moved to Scott Co., TN, it was dismissed, because no one showed to testify against them. Another case was dismissed in Overton Co., TN, because Judge Goodpasture, said they were following orders from superiors. They were indicted for the murder of Robert Richardson and James Payne, but I'm not sure if either of these are the cases tried in other counties. There is a Thomas Brooks mentioned in the records too, but I do not know if he and William were related. Wilma Gibson
