    2. Hershel Lee Miller was the son of William Ernest Miller (b. July 25, 1911, d. July 12, 1978) and Lora Mae Hall (b. June 08, 1915, d. April 30, 1984) -- both buried at Hanging Limb Cemetery in Overton County. Lora Mae Hall was the daughter of Andrew Burton Hall and Ova D. Owens, who are both buried at Campground Cemetery in Fentress County. ---------------- MONTEREY -- Funeral services for Hershel Lee Miller, 58, of Kaneohe, Hawaii, will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, at 12 noon at the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Burial will be in Phillips Cemetery in Hanging Limb with full military honors provided by the Veterans Honor Guard. Family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 8, from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Miller died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born April 6, 1948, in Overton County to the late William Earnest and Mae Hall Miller. He was the sixth of eight children. Mr. Miller was retired from the U.S. Custom and Border Protection, having served as Port Director in various locations, including Detroit, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. After graduating high school in Red Key, Ind. in 1966, Mr. Miller volunteered to serve in the Army. He served a total of three years of active duty, one of those being in Vietnam, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts among many other medals. After completing his service, he furthered his education. He then went to work for the Justice Department. Later, Mr. Miller was employed as a Port Director with the Department of Immigration and Naturalization, now known as Homeland Security. Although he had many posts all over the world and had to be away from his family, they always supported him in his endeavors. He spent his entire life working to make the U.S. a safer place. After retiring, Mr. Miller settled down in Kaneohe, Hawaii. His family includes his wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Amy and Joy Hayashida, both of Oahu, Hawaii; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Arthur Dee and Myma Miller of Monterey, Harold and Phyllis Miller of Crawford, Paul and Sheila Miller of Cookeville and Mark Miller of Monterey; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Sharp of Monterey; a sister-in-law, Velma Miller of Monterey; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin C. Miller, and a sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Bob Roberts. Pallbearers will be Jack, Randy, Scott, Rex, Dee, Ben and Alan Miller, Doug and Mitchell Roberts, Jeff Sharp and Gareth Tokunaga. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through Goff Funeral Home or to Hospice Hawaii, 860 Iwilei Road, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96817-5018. Bro.
