Syracuse Herald Journal (Syracuse New York) Sunday May 23 1943 Mrs Mary York dies at 77: Mother of Hero of Last War Pall Mall TN May 23 Mrs mary york 7 who in 1917 told Sgt Alvin C York her son, "to go and fight there and I'll work and Pray that you get home," died last midnight at the mountain home of the famous son. Mrs York who had been blind and bedridden for many months was known throughout this Tennessee mountain region as Mother York. It was to her that York repeatedly offered all credit for his heroism in world War I. Funeral services were set for Saturday afternoon in the Pall Mall church. She is survived by eight sons, Alvin, Henry, Joe, Sam, George, James, Albert and Robert and two daughters Mrs Lillie Stewart and Mrs James Rains. All her children live in Pall Mall.
