To our sister societies: Please send this email to your members, if possible. The Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society has several announcements for you this month! Please join us Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE) at the Edmondson Pike Branch of the Public Library, 5501 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN. Our speaker is Dr. Carole Bucy, professor of History at Volunteer State Community College. She will discuss her own experiences exploring her family history and her husband's, locating these families in the broader story of Tennessee and American history, including the Coal Miners Wars in East Tennessee and the Panic of 1893. The title of her talk is: "Historian Becomes a Genealogist: Putting a Face and Feelings on Facts" We look forward to seeing you. ******************************************* This past month I received the following email which I think will be of interest to our members: The Nashville Public Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of HeritageQuest Online, including remote access! We believe that this resource will be very useful to genealogists at all levels of expertise, whether they are working in the Nashville Room downtown, at the branches, or from their homes (remote access is available to all library card holders). HeritageQuest Online includes: * all of the images, and extensive indexing, from the 1790 - 1930 U.S. federal censuses * more than 20,000 book titles, including nearly 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories * more than 250 primary-source documents, such as tax lists, city directories, probate records, and more * the Periodical Source Index (PERSI), which covers more than 6,300 genealogy and history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800 * the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, which identifies more than 80,000 American military, naval, and marine officers and enlisted men * the forthcoming Freedman's Bank Records, a database that documents more than 70,000 bank depositors and their dependants and heirs. The Freedman's Bank Records is considered one of the most important resources for African-American genealogical research. You can access the database at any Nashville Public Library Branch, or you can access it in the comfort of your own home with your NPL library card. Please go to our Online Resources at http://www.library.nashville.org/Links/onlineresources.htm and click on the HeritageQuest Online link. If you are accessing the database from home, you will be prompted for your name and the barcode from your library card. You will also be prompted to create a PIN number. More information on the PIN number is available at http://www.library.nashville.org/Newsevents/PINs.htm. Aimee B. James, C.A.
