Peggy, Having been instrumental in the saving and ongoing maintenance of a historic old cemetery in White Co., TN, I have learned a lot. First, there are no government monies for maintenance of private cemeteries in TN. There are laws that permit relatives and descendants to visit and maintain the cemeteries. There are also laws that empower local courts and law enforcement people to enforce the TN Cemetery and Burial Laws, but the results are quite inconsistent and usually reluctantly followed or flatly denied. Diplomacy, compromise, and sweat equity, however, have worked for us in White County rather than law enforcement. The cemetery in White County, TN is the burial site of William BUTRAM, II, who is the ancestor of all the BERTRAM descendants in Fentress Co., TN and surrounding area. Here are some links to websites that should help you. The third one can be downloaded in pdf format if you have free Adobe software. (From almost any government website.) http://www.savinggraves-us.org/tn/index.htm http://www.tngenweb.org/law/cemetery-law.html http://www.davidsoncocemeterysurvey.com/Tennessee%20Cemetery.pdf#search=%22TN%20Cemetery%20laws%22 Good luck! Sincerely, Anna Bertram abertram@heartoftn.net Peggy Yates Riley smriley@indy.net wrote: It has recently come to my attention that older, rural cemeteries like the one at Bill's Creek are not always being maintained. Or, perhaps more correctly, some sections are not being maintained. A family member has noted that stones marking some of the graves had been thrown over the hill and that other markers had been moved from their original locations. Apparently individuals who had been mowing the cemetery found it easier to collect the stones and stack them to the side and then mow. After mowing stones were returned to positions on the graves. This may explain why my father always insisted that many of the stones were not where they should have been when we went back to visit. Does Tennessee have any type of program that allows for state funds to be used in the maintenance of these older cemeteries? Or, is it the family members' responsibility to maintain these sites? If this task belongs to family members, can anyone suggest a reputable firm for mowing and maintenance?
Hi all, I have the names of Waldon Delk & Mollie Patton children as: Betty, Brenda, Bill and Dennis Bruce York's website only lists them as "living", but provides spouses names: living Moles living Bowden living Wright living Fowler http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=bruceyork&id=I82527 Which of these spouses belong to the names above? Thanks
Living persons names should never appear on the internet without their permission. My two cents worth! What do the rest of you think? I disagree, In that case every obituaray that has ever been printed would not be able to appear on-line. However, I do agree that posting some information on living individuals is questionable. As I live in Germany, far away from any library or court house record in the USA, I primarily research on-line so 98% percent of my findings come from the internet. It is my view that if it has been printed to the public in a newspaper then it is public property and can be used. If it was generally held that no information about a living person can be made public then: -marriage & engagement announcements (common in all newspapers) -birth announcements (common in all newspapers) -death & obituary announcements (Like Jennings Funeral Home) Would not be possible. I for one would not like to see these dissapear from newspapers...would you?
