Hi, Fabian, Jonathan Allen "Voiles" was indeed the son of Elizabeth Goddard and Steve Allen. I don't know what happened to Mr. Allen but William Voiles and wife, Elizabeth Goddard Allen Voiles, raised him and siblings, along with the children from their marriage. I don't believe that he was known as James M. I have his CW pension file and information from members of that Voiles family, in addition to other research. "Allardt Gazette: "Armathwaite Jan 9 -- Mr. James M. Allen of Carmi, Ill, is visiting friends here. He is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Voils of Robbins, by another husband. She formerly resided here. He left here in 1853, and was a soldier in the late war. He talks of moving here in the spring. 12 Jan 1893." As for James M. Allen, several of us Voiles researchers had wondered if he might be the James Voiles listed as husband of Alvana Auterson in the 1850 (or 1860?) Overton Co., TN census. We never knew what happened to this James but Alvana turned up later in the 1870 Clinton Co., Ky census with no James. Does anyone know the answer to the question of whether James Voiles who was enumerated with wife Alvana in 1860 census is the same as the James Allen from Carmi, Illinois who visited his mother in 1893?
