Some of you may remember Charles Reed. His father was Rosier Cullum Reid (Reed) and his mother was Martha Belle Buck (both buried at Taylor Place Cemetery in Fentress County). Charles taught school in Fentress County before moving away. ------------------------------------------------ Charles Raymond Reed GEORGIA -- Funeral services for Charles Raymond Reed, 82, of McCaysville, Ga., will be held at 4:30 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Fairview Baptist Church in Georgia. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery with full military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard, led by Colonel George Pletcher. Mr. Reed died on Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, in Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga. He was born in Allardt to the late R.C. and Martha Buck Reed. He served in the Navy during World War II. During his tour of duty from 1943-1946, he served aboard the USS Hank as a torpedo operator. During this time, he survived three kamikaze attacks. He graduated from Tennessee Tech and was an educator throughout the East Tennessee area. After 34 years of teaching, he retired from the Polk County School system in 1985, as Principal of Copperhill Elementary School. Mr. Reed was very active in the community, serving on the Fannin County Board of Equalization for 10 years. He was also very active in the Fairview Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and on the Sunday School Committee. His family includes his wife of 26 years, Vellanea Wimberley Reed of McCaysville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Brenda Reed of Cookeville, and Shannon and Janet Payne of McCaysville; a daughter and son-in-law, Roxie and John Trovato of Copperhill, Ga.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alma Mahoney, Azra and Ruble Price, and Gladys Nixon, all of Jamestown, and Grace and Ernest Buck of Pall Mall; four grandchildren, Philip and Ginny Reed, Connor and Alexis Payne; special canine friend, Ginger; and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Welba Reed. Pallbearers will be Jack Suits, Calvin Cook, Keith Brooks, John Trovato, Andy Hyde and Sam Parr. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Jones, Darrell Moore, Mike Gobble, Alden Dilbeck, Gary Pantaleo, Royce Burnette, Nick Wimberley, Kim Campbell, Johnny Payne, Marvin Hyde, Dr. Bill Crouch and Edsel Deal.
