Happy Birthday Bruce and thank you for the outstanding work you do... Milly WARD Piros My Mind is like Lightning.....One Brilliant flash and pooooooooofffffffff It's gone
Bruce, I have one for you: In PAF, if I have an entry JAMES EARL JACOBS but remember him only by EARL JACOBS, how do I search for him? Also, what about by a nickname, such as Sugar Bill, when I can't remember his real name? In 2011 I need to learn how to use more of PAF's features. Willie God created families so that we would always have someone who cares, and someone to care for.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, Bruce York! I dare say the retirement date will be more significant for you than your birthday, so HAPPY RETIREMENT ON JANUARY 7 too. cousin Willie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce York" <bruceyork1243@yahoo.com> To: <tnfentre@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 2010 11:59 PM Subject: [TNFENTRE] York's Fentress Co, TN database exceeds 294,000 Names Hi Friends: As we near the end of 2010, I want to thank all of you who have contributed to growing and improving York's Fentress County, TN database. Stan, Sometimes I find the marriage record, or sometimes the maiden name is on a tombstone, in a parents' Last Will & Testament, Bible records, a surname passed down as a given name in the family, a census record that shows a household with an in-law in it, maybe a neighbor always present throughout moves, Death Certificates, and oral family traditions. If her given name is fairly uncommon in a given area I will hunt for her line by line in the census immediately prior to her marriage. Most of the time the maiden name will be found but occasionally it will not. In those cases when I am entering the female's given name in my data base I will add her married name in parenthesis. This makes it easier to find on the index. I will remove the name in parenthesis when I find the correct maiden name for her. If you give me a specific example I will try to give you ideas on where to look. Gerri, I we probably should be looking for these SURNAMES for Elmyra in either Russell Co KY or Fentress Co TN, as Joseph Sr was living in Russell Co KY in 1810 census. Don't know when Joseph Jr (Elmyra's husband) came to Fentress Co, whether before or after he was married. 1850 and 1860 census has all Joseph Jr's children born in TN, but 1870 and 1880 has Thomas, Mary, Elisha and Jonathan being born in KY and the later ones starting with Nancy, born in TN 1838. This would place Joseph Jr and Elmyra in Ky until about 1836 and in TN by 1838. Chances are, Joseph Jr married in KY before January 1, 1830 and lived there six or more years before moving to TN. So, the SURNAME of Elmyra would logically be someone who came through Russell Co from NC since Elmyra is said to be born in NC. Does this make sense? Milly, Sorry for your loss. My Father passed Oct 5, 2010. It hit me a lot harder than I thought it would, but we must realize that they are in a better place & no more suffering. Milly, I expressed my condolences on facebook, but want to add my personal regrets here, and also to add that when my mother died on July 26 of this year at age 92 years 2 mos and 27 days we knew it was a blessing for her, but a great personal loss for her 5 living children, her grandchildren, g-grandchildren and gg-grandchildren - 101 in all. I have been recently going through some of her personal things - scrapbooks, photos, old birthday and Christmas cards - and am just now realizing just what a wonderfully loving and loved person she was. I doubt that one ever gets over the death of a parent, but we can certainly rejoice in coming to understand them better. Our prayers are with you in this time of your personal grief. Remember that there's One who will stand beside you through your pain, Who understands all your grief, and Who is able to strengthen you for whatever you must endure. Hi, Please, don't think that I'm biased and completely disregard, the women, in the family. Most of my ancestors, I have been unable to find the maiden names of their wife's, how do you go about finding them? Thank you for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it. Sincerely, Stan ArneyWichita, KS
I have a Q? for all of you, about your genealogy research. When you began tracing your family surname, did you only concentrate on that surname, therefore only the men, who could carry on the family name? I will be honest, I have never taken a single course or workshop, on the hobby of genealogy. I never had anyone, sit me down, and show me, step-by-step, just how to go about all of this, the correct way. I know there is no perfect plan to research your family, but it would have been nice to have some pointers. How did I begin, I asked my paternal grandmother about our family, and she handed me a small sheet of paper with some names on it. She also told me, I might want to write a distant cousin, whom she knew who was into genealogy, and see what he could tell me. Well, he sent me a hand-drawn family tree, it wasn’t complete mind you, but it was a great start. Hey, at least I wasn’t starting from scratch. I knew my family was basically in Tennessee, so I began looking up some of the names in the US Federal Census microfilm rolls. Wow, that was a joke, at first no one told me they had index books to check first, so I spent hours rolling through page after page of microfilm, and getting frustrated that a person, next to me, suggested looking in the index books, first. The problem with only using the US Federal Census, is it doesn’t give you the maiden names of any of the wife’s. I began my research back in the mid-1970’s, and I still have so much more to learn, and need to know. “Brick walls”, as they are know by, in the genealogy community, are the most frustrating. Especially, when you feel you are all alone, trying to solve that mystery. I only concentrated, on the men, the ones who carried on my family surname, from one generation to the next, disregarding the women, basically altogether. After all, they do not carry on the family surname, so why keep track of them, right? I have come to learn, as this year comes to a close, that my way of thinking, genealogy wise, has been way too narrow. After all, if I want to know “where do I come from?” I come from both a father and a mother. I’m a mix of their blood. My mother’s family blood is just as much a part of me, as my father’s family blood is. So, that means my mother’s relatives, are (excuse the expression) relative to genealogy research. After all, if my mother’s family has Native American blood in them, then so do I, or if my father’s family has Asian American blood in them, then so do I. There is an added benefit to keeping an eye on, what I call “non-surname carriers” and that is they may lead you to information on a “surname carrier” that you haven’t been able to find. Has anyone else, made this same error of judgment, in their research? Stan ArneyWichita, KS
