When my son, granddaughter and I came for my cousin WILLIS LEFFEW's funeral we stopped at Camp Nelson. Amazing place with so many military tombstones.. By the way no one has been arrested for Willis's murder. The detective told me he has a suspect but not enough evidence to prosecute. It's a shame... They lost my dad's youngest brother about halfway down the mountain when he got thrown off the back of the sled after hitting a big dip. 2. On my Dad's side in 1960 I wrote to his father Henry Ward in Anderson Co TN what my great grandparents names were. I was 19 years old. My Grandpa answered my letter and I still have it. It had his father Freland Hison Ward and mother Fair Sealy Byrge names on it but no other information. Later in Fentress Co I asked Granny Delk, my mother's mother about her parents and got that info, Jesse Young Patton and Melvina Crabtree. I put everything I found out about on the back burner to raise my children. We had 5. After my husband Bob died in 1997 I jumped into genealogy to ease my mind and here I am today. Bob was Canadian with grandparents from Hungary, England and the Wales. They all migrated to Canada. I have Hungarian marriage certificate. Of course I couldn't read it. I worked with someone who spoke hungarian and I had it deciphered. So I have all that information. Plus I have pictures of the Hungarian great grand parents. They are beautifully framed with antique frames my husband and I bought for them. My great grandma Phaircelia, wife of Freland Ward, had many different spellings. The first was on 1850 census as Tharsiddy couldn't find her again till 1880 and it was Farcelia. Thought she had died because I couldn't find her after that. About 6 years ago some one sent me an email asking about her....Then I found out she had abandoned her husband and 3 sons and ran off with her brother in law. In 1900 it Frassie and 1910 Rarlilie. She and the brother in law had 10 more children and he had left two children and a wife behind...Oh the things we find out.. It gives me great pleasure when I can help someone out...I was in the position of trying to find things and I was award a vast amount of info. I have a lot of 3 ring binders full of info and pictures that I have collected.... I have many things on my Grandma Mollie Owens Ward's side of the family. I have a picture of her grandfather John Michael VanHuss in his Civil War uniform. It is in water color. Just a few things.... 1. [TNFENTRE] How I got started in genealogy
    2. THOMAS JOHNSON
    3. About 26 years ago one of my sisters sent me a bundle of papers with notes my mother had collected on our family. My mother had tried to build a genealogy from interviewing older members. I decided to try and use the internet to see what I could find. There was a note about a Great Grandfather with information in a book., so I searched for him, Darius Willett. WHAM! Just my luck, someone had done a major reasearch project on the Willetts going back to Jamestown, VA and my father's name was in the list. Now I had to learn what a gedcom was all about. That was my father's paternal line so what about his mother's side? I grew up knowing and loving my Great Grandmother, Ada Howard. The notes told me she was born in Pall Mall and married in Hill Ham, TN. Needless to say, I found Pall Mall right away but "Hill Ham" took a few months and some odd clues. Soon I found myself spending several hours a day searching and I was thourouly hooked. There were names I had heard as a child like Bry Howard but there were no notes. I found some in Overton County and a graveyard near Clarksville, AR. It has been a great journey. I never expected to find so many relatives, living and dead. I never expected to learn so much history, how little was to be found in books and how much my ancesters were a partof it all. And, I never expected to find so many nice people on the internet. I follow the Fentress list. Not too many relatives there but mostly to listen to the stories and people. Tom Johnson

    3. First, loving to read about all of our stories. Perhaps I got interested in genealogy because my family always seemed to be moving and I was looking for roots?!! <grin> My only stable years were early on when I lived with my grandparents -grandpa was my most favorite person - loved being part of his brothers' families. It was only as an adult that I realized the traditions we observed - food & reunions & projects were part & parcel of our families for generations. Grandpa was born in Kansas but his family is from Fentress County - line if have followed is back through Robert Owen Davidson -b.7/9/1853 (my g-grand) son of William A Davidson b-1814 (& Margaret Owen) son of Abner Davidson-1780/82? & Annie Evans. I've found connections with their line to the Howertons from Virginia but have not investigated enough. I work full-time with a longish commute so time is something I never seem to have enough of!! This year I did buy an Ancestry membership - can't wait for a couple of free days to start searching. Would love to hear from any of my Davidson/Evans/Owen/Howerton Cousins! 3. I always knew that my father's family came from Scotland. After I had traced them back to the early 1800s I started on my mother's family. I knew she was born in Wilder in Fentress County. My mother's family are descendants of Marrietta Ramsey and Sam Houston Rodgers. I found out that they were buried in the Banner Springs Methodist Church cemetery. In a trip to go to the "Worlds Longest Yard Sale", and by making inquiries I was given directions to the church but did not see a cemetery. I then drove a few feet east of the church and spotted a mail box with the name Rodgers on it. I knocked on the door and was invited in. I asked Mr. Rodgers if he knew where San Houston Rodgers was buried. He replied that he could because he had attended the funeral. He got in his pickup and led us down a dirt road about 200 yards behind the church where the cemetery was. He was actually one of my ancestors. He showed us the graves of Marrietta and Sam. Regretfully I did not write down the name of this gentleman and if anyone knows who he is and whether he is still alive, please let me know. If anyone knows of any Rodgers in this family I would appreciate receiving any information about them. I know some of them lived in Cookeville and Monterey. BTW, I have seen the name spelled Rogers also. If anyone can give me proper spelling, I would appreciate it. I live in Alabama near Birmingham. I have found that the members of this List are very helpful. Walter Kirkwood

    3. Anna, my interest in genealogy came about much like yours.  When my grandfather died my mother and aunt decided my grandmother should not be alone at night.  Since we lived only a half mile away, we grandchilden would ride our bikes or someone would deliver us to Grandma's house in the evening.  The next morning we rode to school with Grandma (a teacher), or rode our bikes home if it was summertime.  I remember asking her one night how someone, whose name is long forgotten, was kin to us.  I fell asleep snuggled in her bed, listening to her recite kinships.  She had an interest in genealogy herself and knew many of the family lines.  Oh how I wish I had written down every word I heard her say on those nights!  It wasn't until many years later, after my children were nearly grown and my grandmothers much older, that I began to understand that I needed to write down these things.  I was also blessed by inheriting an occasional scrap of paper where my grandmother wrote names and by her one known diary.  How I treasure the paper things! I am enjoying everyone's stories of how they got started. Judy The May Sexton McGlothin Foundation is now online at maymcglothin.org!  Help us keep the dream alive! 3. During my childhood I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and other relatives of their generation. I cut my teeth on stories of the good old days. When my maternal grandparents took me visiting or had company in their home they would make a "tent" for me by covering a table with sheets. They would put a blanket or two and a pillow under the covered table. That is where I was encouraged to take naps or play quietly in my special hiding place while the adults visited for hours. Instead of sleeping I tried to stay awake to hear the conversations. I learned much about my grandparents' childhoods, courtship, adventures, trails, tribulations, and triumphs. As I became a little older I began asking questions. Both of my mother's parents had been school teachers so they reveled in relating the stories of their lives to my eager ears. (My grandmother especially liked to attach morals to each story.) When my grandfather died he left a small bundle of letters from a distant cousin in Texas. The cousin had been asking him about his family and telling about hers. They had descended from the same great-grandfather although they had never met. My mother dabbled in the buying, refurbishing and reselling of antiques from our home. As early as I can remember I would go with her to antique shows and stores with my hands clasped behind my back as taught. ("see but no touch".) I asked and was told the stories behind various antiques on these trips. I developed a great appreciation of old objects as well as people. My interest extended to visiting old homes on tours and reading historical novels while still in grammar school. I still enjoy all these things. When my daughter was about 16 years old she began to ask me questions about our ancestors I could not answer without some letter writing. My search really intensified, however, a few years later when my daughter gave me a five generation Pennsylvania Dutch style wall chart for Christmas. It was the kind that has spaces for names and dates and is suitable for framing. I realized I would have to do more research to complete it. That was about 25 years ago and I'm still actively researching as much as time permits. I have my daughter to thank for her nudging me into an avocation that has brought me much pleasure, many friends, and more information than I would have ever dreamed possible when I would finally nod off in my little "tent" listening to my grandparents talk.
