In 1973, she was named Humanitarian of Muncie by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She and her husband hosted many AFS students and Ball State international students and teachers in their home. Marie is survived by son, Frank Schwartz, (wife, Rosalee), Indianapolis; their five children; nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren; son, Tom Schwartz, Muncie, his children David, Denver, and Kristin, Australia. 3. Stan, it was not just Muncie but also other industrial towns in Indiana and other midwest cities. Men and women wanted to better their lives and the lives of their children. At some time every child of my paternal grandfather's went to Indiana or Ohio. Only one did not stay. Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Everett moved back to their section of granpa's land. If you check other towns you will see the same thing. I truly believe if all the people in New Castle, IN, who had Tennessee/Kentucky roots were to return to the land where their ancestors lived in the early 1900's; New Castle would be a ghost town. Many prefer not to remember or connect to these roots. In the late 40's and 50's weekends were often a mass exodus of those returning to their homes in Tennessee. There were some who went for a few years but that way of life was just not their way. Punching a time clock for some was just not what they wanted to do for thirty years. I could write an essay on this. Check Bruce York's site York's Fentress County. There you can browse and see all of those who died in that area but were born in what I consider God's country. 3. My grandparents/parents are from Jamestown and Byrdstown as well, yet my parents met in Muncie. My mom told me at the time- whatever time that was- mid-60's maybe, that Muncie was full of work and considered a good place to raise a family. Not sure if this is so, though. ~Sam Oliver On May 12, 2011, at 11:36 AM, Dusti Ide wrote: > I've always wondered about this too as there were a great many who > made the > move.
