Hey Ms. Millie, And Happy Thanksgiving to you and all Tennessee Fentress Site members. I too was in that way of wanting to ask the why's, where's, when's and so on. But in the last couple of years have learned to respect some of those sworn to secret to the grave in the name of "Protective Love" things that went on in our kin' days. Yes, I still look for dates of marriages, births, deaths, cemeteries, and those Beloved pictures. But I am content with not pulling the stories of old apart anymore. I have learned there were reasons for their silence. And I have decided for me at least, it is best to honor that. I would love a Thanksgiving where all the kin could be together again just to enjoy, share, laugh and love each other for who we are. I am so thankful for my kin, friends and this great country which is an honored to live in, and for all the help I have received from this site in looking for my family. You all have been very good to me. I truly wish all a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving. Patty
I've heard that a WARD researcher has a picture of Martha Jane Ward and SVB Carney. I believe a researcher in my line has this same photo. The photo she has is not labeled, but they believe it's the Ward/Carney family. If you believe you have this photo, please contact me. Hi List, May you all have a Blessed Thanksgiving and a safe one. Is there any thing you could wish and be Thankful for this Thanksgiving? If I could have my Thanksgiving wish to come true.....I would wish I had my mother, DOMMIE DELK WARD and two grandpas, JOCKEY DAVID DELK and HENRY WARD here to answer some questions. I would ask my mother why she wouldn't go to the doctor sooner. She would have lived longer. But, she was scared of doctors. I also would wish for pictures of the following.... She left behind 3 sons only to have 10 more children. I would ask Grandpa Henry if he ever saw his mother after that. I do believe he did. Names are the same for both families and their children. And Mark Voiles is the son of my first cousin, Jimmy Voiles. Jimmy's father is Elmer Voiles, brother to my Dad, Willard Voiles. Thanks for sending. Helen
Yes, Millie, Johnnie C. Voiles certainly is my kin. His father, John Voiles, was a brother to my grandfather James Henry Voiles. And Margaret Hicks, mother of this Johnnie C. Voiles, is kin to me also. My Voiles lived more in the FC area but this branch of Voiles lived East a little, in the Robbins area. Thanks for sending. Did you find this obit somewhere on the Rootsweb site? Helen
Ron, I am following with interest your efforts to sort out the SMITHS of Fentress County. I would be glad to help, but my SMith connection is four generations back and I really know no living Smith males that I am related to. My g-g-grandmother was Millie Ann Smith, born in KY in 1840 married Thomas Riley III. He died in 1864, a causualty of the Civil War, and his wife Millie died about 16 months later, in 1865. Millie was pregnant with their first child when Thomas was killed by Tinker David Beatys men. The daughter was born May 16, 1864, and named Lodema Thomas Riley. Millie Ann Smith's parents, Isaac Denton Smith and Zerelda Ann Smith, were first cousins, the children of Phillip Smith and Raccoon John Smith, respectively. Phillip moved his family to Fentress County and died here. Millie Ann Smith had a brother, Isaac Woolsey SMith who was a school teacher and superintendent of schools in Pickett County had two daughters. I know of none other of the male children who stayed in either TN or KY. Raccoon John (Elder John Smith) went to MO and died there. Zerelda Ann was his daughter by his first wife. Other children by his first wife were burned to death in a fire in Alabama. He returned to KY and remarried and had other children, but I don't know what happened to them. Anyway, good luck on your project. I am trying to do the same with our Beaty lines who settled in Fentress County. We have a DNA project and I am a donor and have secured the participation of at least four others of different lines that we know are connected, but in a couple of cases, haven't been able to prove it. My information on William Voiles, B 1808 TN, d 1913 KY, according to his DC. His name and the birthplace of his mother and father are not given on his DC. Any questions, corrections and additions would be welcome and appreciated. My line of Voiles is 1. WILLIAM VOILES, 2. ENOCH VOILES, 3. JAMES HENRY A. VOILES, 4. WILLARD HAZE VOILES, and 5. HELEN VOILES. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of WILLIAM VOILES - - - - Family lore says that Wm was first married to a woman of Indian heritage. They are supposed to have had two children, boys I believe. I have no documentation for any of this and have not found anyone who has. That doesn't mean that it didn't happen, just that I haven't found verification. The names of BETSY and TRAIL, which have been given to this Indian wife, do strike a note. BETSY is a well-known nickname for ELIZABETH and TRAIL was the maiden name of ELIZABETH WARD's mother. ELIZABETH WARD is the first documented wife of WILLIAM VOILES. WILLIAM VOILES was born January 03, 1808 in Mohawk, Greene Co, TN and died December 05, 1913 in Russell Springs, Russell County, KY. He was buried in VOILES Cemetery, Glensfork-Fairplay Community, near the Adair-Russell Co. line. He married (1) ELIZABETH WARD February 23, 1843 in Greene County, TN, daughter of ENOCH WARD and SARAH (TRAIL?). Elizabeth was born Abt. 1819 in TN, and died in Fentress Co., TN., most likely. Some family stories say that Elizabeth died in childbirth with Nancy but I don't believe that is true. I found an Elizabeth Voiles later than that in Fentress Co., TN and believe that she and Nancy lived with Ward relatives for a good while. I have yet to find her death record. Also, I need to find the divorce record for her and William, if indeed one exists. They were divorced after the birth of Nancy in 1861, and William moved to KY, along with some of his children. William and Elizabeth's children: 1. ENOCH VOILES, b. 1846, Mohawk, Greene County, Tennessee; d. Abt. 1895, Adair Co, KY. m. Artema Gentry October 7, 1868 in Wayne Co., KY. Her parents were William J. Gentry and Sarah (Sallie) Hicks. Enoch Voiles is buried in Voiles Cemetery in KY, along with William. Artema is buried in Love's Chapel Cemetery in Scott Co., TN. 2. Alvana was born Abt. 1838 in NC, and died abt.1894 in Adair County, KY. This marriage was given as the second for both Alvana and William on the marriage certificate. Alvana was listed as Mrs. Alvana Auterson. Also given were age of William - 69 and of Alvana - 40. Alvana and James Viles were found in the 1860 Overton Co., TN Census as husband and wife. Identity of this James has not been determined and he is gone by the 1870 census. Any information on the identification of this James would be great! The 1870 Clinton Co., KY census lists Alvana as Alvana Voils, housekeeper in the Thomas Crabtree household. James Voils and wife Mary, along with William and son Philip, are enumerated next door, in the same household. I would like to know Alvana's relationship with Thomas Crabtree, if any. Or perhaps Thomas is connected to the VOILES family? Any help appreciated on this one. These children are listed in the 1870 Census with Alvana - couldn't read their birth place. Any help would be welcome. Hopefully another descendant of one of these children will do some research in the records and help us out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William Voiles married (3)PRUDA ANN COLLINS March 07, 1894 in Columbia, Adair County, KY. She was born 1849 in Adair County, KY. They had no children. Age on marriage certificate for WILLIAM 80. For PRUDA - 45. And yes it is true that WILLIAM left his land to a descendant for taking care of him in his old age. By that time WILLIAM and JAMES were the only original Voiles of this branch left there in Adair Co., KY, I believe. Philip had moved to Missouri and Penelope had moved to Terre Haute, IN. Sources of information: Cemeteries/Tombstones Death certificates of William, his daughter Penelope, and his son, Phillip. Marriage Certificates for three of William's marriages. Family interviews or correspondence with several branches of the family: Ann Vaughn and Martha Adams, descendants of Nancy. Ralph Voils and Jewel Ashley, descendants of James. Occupation: Farmer; Herb doctor Religion: Baptist Residence: Greene and Fentress Counties, Tennessee; Clinton and Adair Counties, Kentucky Notes for ELIZABETH WARD: William and Elizabeth separated sometime after Nancy was born in 1861 and William moved into KY with some of his family. Notes for ALVANA AUTERSON: Alvana 18 was listed in the 1860 Overton County, TN Census, along with James Viles 25. In the 1870 Clinton Co., KY census, she is listed as Alvana Voils and is in the household of Thomas Crabtree, 74, born in VA, with these children: Tennessee, 9, born TN; James, 8, born Tn; Lucinda, 6, born TN; Alex,4, born KY; and Amanda, 11/12, born KY. If census is correct, Alvana would have moved to KY between 1864-1866. Alvana was listed as Mrs. Alvana Auterson on her and William's marriage certificate in 1878. The 1880 Adair Co.KY Census lists William Voils, 70, TN along with Alvana, 40, NC, and the following children: Tennessee, 20, TN; Lieusinda, 15, TN; Alexander, 13, KY; Amanda, 11, KY; Mary F., 7, KY; Matilda, 3, KY; Joan, 2, KY; and James S., 17, grandson. Mary, Matilda, and Joan have been born in the years since 1870. Does anyone know the identity of the grandson, James?????? Researchers, including descendents of Alvana, have not been able to determine who is the father of these children. Conjecture covers the gamut - James is an absentee father; William is the father; and any number of other possibilities. One fact is that William is listed as the father of several of the younger children on their marriage certificates. However, that alone does not prove anything - children often took the name of a step-parent. Hopefully, at some point a descendent of one of these children will do further research in the records. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Generation #2 - ENOCH VOILES & ARTEMA GENTRY - my line: 2. Hi Millie and everyone, I hope everyone has a fantastic & blessed Thanksgiving this week! As everyone probably knows, we have had a terrible time trying to separate and identify all the different Smith lines in Fentress County. Recently, I was contacted by Becky Smith who descends from Matthew "Mathie" Smith & Ebba ??? who lived in Dist. 11 of Fentress Co. My g-g-grandfather, George W. Smith and his wife, Judith Garrett also lived in Dist. 11 with their family. Dist. 11 was called the "Olympus" area on the census' that were taken. I strongly believe these two families may have been connected because they don't show up in Oma Smith's book with any amount of mention. Also, because we can't seem to find any records on them - Fentress Co. Courthouse burnt down a couple of times - I believe the only way we can positively identify these and other Smith lines is to ask male Smith family members who have researched their families to participate in a Y-DNA project. My brother, Scott Smith has already taken and has his Y-DNA posted on the Southern Smith's Y-DNA page. There are now well over a hundred other Smith's that have also tested and posted their family trees. I would like to try and organize a 3 county Smith Y-DNA project for males with the SMITH surname that have ancestors from Fentress, Overton, and Pickett counties. If you are trying to research the Smith's from any of these 3 counties, please contact me at: rsmith0127@yahoo.com Please let me know which line you are researching, what county, and who you might have that would be interested in participating. This project would only be for male Smith's because the test only checks the Y-DNA which is carried only by the males of the line. I would suggest a minimum 25 marker test because the 12 marker test really doesn't tell much. Here is the link to the Southern Smith Reconstruction Project: http://www.southernsmiths.org/smithdnaproject.htm If you can't participate, but have a father, uncle, brother, or cousin with the Smith surname, you can submit them if they are willing. You can go to the above link for more info. Also, if you go to the "Test Results" and look in Haplogroup I, you will see Kit #9011 - George W. Smith, Fentress Co., TN - this is my brother, Scott's Y-DNA.
Yes Wilma, the EVANS I mentioned were JESSE and DEAN DELK EVANS children. Milly Piros*Garfield Heights I have been to the end of the Earth. I have been to the end of the Waters. Milly I have a picture of Palmer Evans here someplace, it was given to me by my Aunt Pauline Crabtree, but I do not have a clue about Willlard Evans. Wasn't they Jesse Evans sons? Their mother was Dean (DeAnn) Delk. Wilma
Helen I have to look at my records but I believe Willard was too young and maybe enlisted as an older person. There is also an ODIE DELK age 22. In my Granny's photo collection there is a photo of ODIE but no last name. Could they be one and the same? For some reason my computer hangs up on my web site _www.geocities.com/millyella/listofpages.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/millyella/listofpages.html) Click on Strangers In A Box. Millie, I don't know about Willard Evans but I do know that more than one underage soldier got into the war. "Fraud enlistment" is a new term to me, though. Helen

The following is for Fentress For Fentress Co there was a WILLARD EVANS listed with no age and it said Fraud Enlistment. Did this mean he was too young to be in the army? I think he was younger than Palmer Evans his brother. They were my mother's cousins. Milly Piros*Garfield Heights I have been to the end of the Earth. I have been to the end of the Waters.
