And I pity you with the name of Smith to research. Or is it really any harder than another name? I can see that it would be for sure, as far as having a larger volume of everything to deal with. Otherwise, I don't know how it could be any harder than for the Voiles family. A fellow Voiles researcher and I are in the process of trying to identify every Voiles (of any spelling) in early Greene Co., TN, hoping that it might help us piece together our own branch. Have you ever realized the vast amount of information there is in Greene Co. and I suspect that it is because it was a central point of migration west from several directions. So if ever you run across researchers who are connected to East TN Voiles, past or present, if you have time direct them my way and I'll be glad to confer with them. Thanks Gary, for all you do in the genealogy field. Helen
Hi List, Somewhere I found a post of someone looking for James Winningham, couldn't remember where but knew our list had quite a few researching this name. So hope the following is helpful. Found this at library in Salisbury: James Winningham Those of us who research the Winningham family can only wonder and speculate upon the time and place of debarkation of those first Winninghams. One conjecture is that they landed at a port on one of the tidal rivers of Virginia, leaving their port of entry to settle in the interior. In the early and middle 18th century the Winningham name, spelled a number of ways, appears in a number of counties through the deed books, quit rent and poll tax records. Our chief interest is with the James Winningham. The "family tradition" as written by Alma Winningham in 1929, states that James was born in 1756 in Virginia. No mention is made of his parentage. He later moved to Granville County, North Carolina, where he was living at the time of the Revolutionary War. He served two enlistments and received a Rev. War Claim of $20.00 per annum. This document was dated 16 March 1835. James Winningham married Sarah Nichols in Iredell Co. NC on 13 June 1792 or 1793. No record of this marriage has been found. In Sarah Winningham's claim of a widow's pension, she stated she was uncertain of the year because the family Bible has been lost. James received a license to operate an "ordinary" 18 February 1801.James and Sarah Winningham had a family, but the names of only two of their children are known. The oldest was Gaines Winningham, born 11 Feb. 1794 who married Nancy Moffitt. The other child was Rachel who married Thomas Gordon. The children of Gaies and Nancy (Moffitt) Winninham are of particular interest because a number of modern day researchers are descended from these children. The oldest was Adam, born 1817, who married Dorinda Brown, Rebecca born 1819, married John Moon, William born 1821 married Sarah Allred, James Newton born 1823 married Nancy Fox, Francis born 1825 marriage unknown, Sebert Francis Marion born 1826 married Laura Ann Lyndown, Jesse born 1829 married Elizabeth Campbell, Winci born 1837 married Isaac N. Rollins, Sarah E. born 1839 married Zachary Williams. The census records throughout the 19th century show the Winninghams to have scattered all across the south and into the mid-west. Many of these Winninghams are thought to be siblings, cousins and descendants of James Winningham. Endnotes: Alma Winningham, Report of Historian of the Winningham Family, Washington, D.C. 1929 Declaration of service to obtain benefit under Act of Congress of the 7th June 1832. State of North Carolina, Randolph Co., Court of Pleas and Quarter Session, August Term 1834 War Dept. Rev. Claim, 15 March 1835 L.P. Waldo, Court of Pensions, Letter to court by Elisha Smith, 2 April 1855 State of North Carolina, Randolph County, Licenses to keep Ordinary 18 Feb. 1801 Written by Mary G. Winningham Does anyone know if this might be a brother to our Richard Winningham? Have a good day! Pat
Dear Sarah, Don't believe for a moment that you are not good at researching! From what I have seen you are a searcher of the truth the same as I am. Would love to meet with you, so we can share information. Maybe when the weather is warmer though. Thank you for the e-mail address. Merry Christmas! Pat
Pat, Here is the site with Carmen's e-mail at the bottom of the introduction to the Augusta Co,VA rootsweb site. I hope you can figure something out. I was just mystified. I would love to try to arrange a meeting perhaps at the Salisbury library one day this year. I'm not a very good genealogist, and I haven't worked diligently in several years. But I'm ready to do better. Happy holidays. Sarah Carmen J. Finley / Santa Rosa, CA / finleyc@sonoma.edu Augusta County Coordinator
