Dixie, My Carl and Roscoe are distantly related to you, I think. I have Mathias Austin Wright (b. 1815) as the son of Mathew W. Wright (b. 1789) . I have Elizabeth Jane Wright (b. 1817) as daughter of John Wright (b. 1787). Mathias Austin and Elizabeth Jane Wright were first cousins who married. My family {descendants of Samuel}believes that Samuel Wright (b. 1810) was another first cousin born of David Wright. David may not have made it into Fentress (but Samuel did) and David was a third brother to Mathew and John. Even if all of this is accurate, we don't know the source of Roscoe and Carl. Mine seem to be the oldest so far. I would love help in sorting all of this out. Sarah
Hello, People: I do have another WRIGHT family that has the names of Roscoe 'Hollis' WRIGHT and his brother, Carl WRIGHT. Roscoe 'Hollis' WRIGHT was born July 25, 1914, and died September 25, 1998, both in Casey Co., KY. He is buried at the WHITED Cemetery in Casey Co., KY. He was 5y on the January 19, 1920, Census of Casey Co., KY. The information I have on Carl is his birth year was 1916 and the 1920 Casey Co., KY Census has him listed at 3y 9/12 m and they are both listed as the sons of James David and Martha 'Issabella' (CHOATE) WRIGHT. Carl died in 1931 and he is buried at the AUSTIN Cemetery, in Casey Co., KY. Neither of these sons married. The parents were from Fentress Co., TN and had a total of 13 children, the first 5 being born in Fentress Co.: the rest in Casey Co., KY. The Father, James David WRIGHT was the son of John Taylor and Elizabeth A. (KING) WRIGHT. The Mother, "Issabell' was the daughter of Matilda Emeline (known as Aunt Ev) (SCOTT) WHITED and William Thomas (SHOAT) CHOATE. Issabell was raised by her husband's Grandparents: Mathias Austin and Elizabeth Jane (WRIGHT) WRIGHT. James and Issabell are both buried at the AUSTIN Cemetery in Casey Co., KY. "Aunt Ev" was the daughter of my Great Grandfather; James Tunis and his first wife, Asenath (ANDERSON) SCOTT. She married Alexander W. WHITED December 17, 1885, in Casey Co., KY. Alexander's first wife died about 1880 and they had two sons: James B. and Daniel Boone WHITED. I do not have the name of this Mother. If anyone has this information, I would love to know where to find it. Alexander was a Pvt. in D Co. of the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He and his wife, Aunt Ev, and the two sons are all buried at the WHITED Cemetery in Casey Co., KY. All of this information is in my files and I have been in and searched in both Counties when I can. I live in California, and I would welcome any corrections and any other information. Surely there is some connection to these three WRIGHT Families. Thank you all for your interest. Dixie (SCOTT)
Lily Mae Wright (b. 1889) had a brother Silas Roscoe Wright (b. 1887). It just seems odd that there are two Wright families in Fentress Co using Roscoe and Carl as names and not being related. And we don't know where the names come from. I do not think that A. B. Wright is related to the Samuel Wright family, but I find the Wrights very difficult to sort out. Samuel Wright Sr. was born 1810. Thanks for any clues. Sarah
I am looking for information on the Wright family beginning with A. B. Wright who was a Methodist Episcopal Circuit rider in the later 1800's. A school was built in Burrville in Morgan County in his honor. His daughter Mary Jane Wright married Tobias Peters who them were the parents of my grandfather, Timothy victor Hugo Peters. If you could go back farther in the ancestors, we might be kinfolks. Hi all, I'm new to mailing lists so please forgive me if I'm not doing this right. I'm looking for information about my husbands family. His grandfather is William Jackson Scroggins, born in TN, Aug. 1895, died 1929. . Williams fathers name is George, also born in TN. The 1900 census for Fentress County lists a William J. Scroggins with the birthdate of Aug. 1895. The census lists him as the grandson of A.J. Scroggins. I'm wondering if this could be the same William. Does anyone have information on this family? Sincerely, Michele Scroggins
My father, born in Fentress Co in 1908, was named Carl Wright Jenkins. I asked him who he was named for, but he had no idea. Does anyone know where the name Carl among Wrights would have come from? I also wonder if the two were from the same Wright lineage. Ancestors of my father's Wrights were Samuel Wright/ Celia (Celina? Seely) Smith and Samuel Wright, Jr./Sarah Samantha Owen and then Lily Mae Wright and Daniel Thomas Jenkins. My father was born around Wilder or Crawford. Thanks, Sarah
PARKER CITY - Carl Wright, 84, Parker City resident, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 2, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Colleen (McGhee) Wright; son, Jerry Ray Wright (wife: Paula) Parker City; four grandchildren, Joellen Early (husband: Dwight) New Lisbon, Jerry Ray Wright II, Parker City, Jason Randall Wright (wife: Missy) Parker City, Jessica Wright, Parker City; five great-grandchildren, Jerry and Jodi Munday, Jesse, Zachary, and Olivia Wright; three step-great-grandchildren, George, Brooke, and Colby Early. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Milly, I have done nothing but pray for these families and hold my breath each time a new update comes on the television. I can't begin to imagine what they are going through. My daddy and two uncles all worked in the coal mines in Wilder. My one uncle died of black lung. Milly this isn't an off topic, coal mining was a part of our families, and history. Thank you for putting it on the site. And our families and history is what makes genealogy. Pat, I meant to reply to your inquiry sooner, but my mail was lost, and now was just able to retrieve my mail a few days ago, and also I was out of town for Christmas. In regards to James Winningham, he was brn 29 Feb 1756 VA. According to my sources he is the brother to Richard Winningham Sr b. abt 1758 VA. Both remove to NC where Richard dies in Randolph Co. NC. Their father is listed as James Winningham. Nothing else is mentioned about this James Winningham Sr. Researching the Winninghams in VA, I find a John Winningham who recieved land in Jul 1738 in Amelia Co. on lower side of Winninghams Creek. Anone know the identity of this John Winningham? He has to be born at least before 1718. So hope the following is helpful. Found this at library in Salisbury: James Winningham Those of us who research the Winningham family can only wonder and speculate upon the time and place of debarkation of those first Winninghams. One conjecture is that they landed at a port on one of the tidal rivers of Virginia, leaving their port of entry to settle in the interior. In the early and middle 18th century the Winningham name, spelled a number of ways, appears in a number of counties through the deed books, quit rent and poll tax records. Our chief interest is with the James Winningham. The "family tradition" as written by Alma Winningham in 1929, states that James was born in 1756 in Virginia. No mention is made of his parentage. He later moved to Granville County, North Carolina, where he was living at the time of the Revolutionary War. He served two enlistments and received a Rev. War Claim of $20.00 per annum. This document was dated 16 March 1835. James Winningham married Sarah Nichols in Iredell Co. NC on 13 June 1792 or 1793. No record of this marriage has been found. In Sarah Winningham's claim of a widow's pension, she stated she was uncertain of the year because the family Bible has been lost. James received a license to operate an "ordinary" 18 February 1801.James and Sarah Winningham had a family, but the names of only two of their children are known. The oldest was Gaines Winningham, born 11 Feb. 1794 who married Nancy Moffitt. The other child was Rachel who married Thomas Gordon. The children of Gaies and Nancy (Moffitt) Winninham are of particular interest because a number of modern day researchers are descended from these children. The oldest was Adam, born 1817, who married Dorinda Brown, Rebecca born 1819, married John Moon, William born 1821 married Sarah Allred, James Newton born 1823 married Nancy Fox, Francis born 1825 marriage unknown, Sebert Francis Marion born 1826 married Laura Ann Lyndown, Jesse born 1829 married Elizabeth Campbell, Winci born 1837 married Isaac N. Rollins, Sarah E. born 1839 married Zachary Williams. The census records throughout the 19th century show the Winninghams to have scattered all across the south and into the mid-west. Many of these Winninghams are thought to be siblings, cousins and descendants of James Winningham. Cathy, Wanted to answer now before things start going again!! You may have written and it got lost when my hard drive crashed and I lost so very much. Had backed most of it up, but of course, lots still has disappeared. My Richardson are: 1. William Richardson "Buckeye Billy", d: 1835, Smyth Co., VA. m: Rebecca Hays, d: 1809-10, Smyth Co., VA. 2. Isaac Richardson b: 1770-80 d: aft. 1840, Franklin Co., IL. m: Nancy Wiley d: abt.. 1840, Franklin Co., IL. 3. Alexander Wiley Richardson b: 1802 d: 1868, Franklin co., IL. m: Sarah E. Gibbs 1824, Knox Co., TN. I am not sure when the movement of my Richardson's started moving westward. Their home was in the Rich Valley, Washington Co., VA. area. From what I have found all 11 children of William & Rebecca were born there. The Co. changed names, but don't think their home moved. I believe that at least 6 of these children lived in Fentress Co. 1. My Isaac & Nancy had at least 7 children I believe. All of them born in VA., but went west with their family. My Alexander married in Knox Co., TN. 2. John H. d: bef. 1849, Fentress Co. Buried in/at Pall Mall, Fentress Co. wife was Abigail Hildreth. Have a note in files that he was Clk of CO. Court 3. Elizabeth d: aft 1850, Fentress Co. Buried in Campbell Cem., Fentress Co. m: Joseph Campbell 4. Jane m: Arthur R. Frogge, went through Fentress Co., d: 1838, IN. 5. Robert H. d: 1864, Fentree Co., (killed by Beaty's men, don't know who this is) m: Margaret Frogge 6. Sarah d: aft. 1850, Fentress Co. m: Strother Frogge 7. Mary T. m: James Stitt, d: IN. 8. Jesse m: Sally McCarty, both believed to have died in IN. My line of Isaac & Nancy I have almost nothing on! They were m: 1973-97, VA. Believe to have had at least 7 kids. Alexander Wiley, dau., nane starts with N., William, 2nd dau., Robert R., male, Isaac b:1811 & married a Mary abt 1834, Wayne Co., KY. Believe they were in TN. abt. 1820-21, - maybe Knox Co.?, by 1826 in Fentress Co, 1830 in Wayne Co., KY. but in Fentress Co., ??. Then in the mid-last 1830s they moved to Franklin Co., IL. They were there in the 1840 census. My Alexander & Sarah m: 1824, Knox Co., 1st son David b: Knox co., 1825, then dau. Nancy b: Fentress Co., 1826., 3 more children b: in either/& Waynbe Co. KY & Fentress Co., TN. by 1829. In 1830, they had moved to Franklin Co. IL. and joined a church there. So a lot of things happened to my family in Fentress Co. in 5 yrs., + or - a yr. or so. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year also Milly. Thank you for all you do . Sure wish I could give more info than I receive. But I am thankful for all on here that help and enjoy reading many of the memories. I have two daughters: 27 and 29. Eight grandchildren: 3 boys, 11 and 13, one deceased, would be 9. 5 girls, 10, twins 8, 5 and 3. My wish, that these babies didn't grow up so fast. They are treasures.
