Patty, Yeah, obviously, I was out-of-date on my thinking about the cost for out of state subscription, but glad you got the right information. That's interesting that your grandson is taking Grist Mills to school. Will be interested to know what comments he gets from it. I found another mill site Saturday, and actually found about half of an old millstone. It was the old Levi Hull Mill on Big Creek. It was located at a waterfall, and there was a wooden dam above the falls. It was washed away in a flood sometime in the late thirties or early forties the best I can figure. Anybody know any more about it? I have been trying to identify the mother of Wm Cooney Johnson b. 1861/62. I know her first name is Mary according to 1860 census. Wms father Wm Marion Johnson is killed in 1682. By 1880 Wm Cooney Johnson is in the HH of Wm Stepp. What happened to his mother, Mary? Is she deceased by this time? I have seen on a couple of websites, his Mother is listed as Mary Stepp, d/ John Stepp. But the problem I have with this is that Mary, age 15 is still at home in 1860. Wm cooney Johnsons' parents Wm and a Mary are listd in 1860 with a child, Elizabeth 1 yr old. This Mary is abt 24 yrs old. I dot think this Mary, w/o Wm Johnson, is the d/o John Stepp. Can someone please help on this matter? Thanks! I have Mary Stepp the wife of Meremon Johnsons being the daughter of John Stepp & Amanda F Hicks (Hix). Later she married James E. Brannon and appears in the 1910 Fentress co. Census: 1910 Fentress Co, TN census Garfield Branom 27 TN; farmer; Dist 1 #2. Garfield Branom 27 TN 1882-1883 Mary Branom 55 TN 1854-1855 widow 1 of 1 living. Maybe she lied about her age or she did not know for sure herself. Remember many of our forefathers were illiterate. In my experience Ages in census are usually unreliable and should be treated as a barometer as to approximate time they were born. Fabian, Thanks for our response. In doing more research on the Mary Stepps of Fentress Co. Looking at the 1860 census, I find a Mary Stepp still living in the HH of one James Stepp at age 18 and the another Mary Stepp in the HH of John Stepp at age 15. This is the Mary who is supposedly md to Wm Meremon Johnson. However, in 1860 HH of Wm Meremon Johnson lists him already md to a Mary with one child Elizabeth. So now I'm questioning if he was actually was md to a Mry Stepp. According to 1860, Mary Stepp, d/o John Stepp could not have been Wm Johnsons wife. Is there any evidence or document that a Mary Stepp was actually w/o Wm Johnson? Any help/comments or feedbach appreciated! Willie I live in Indiana and think for out of state subscription is $40 per year, it may be more this year, for everything has gone up. Right now it says for out of county $25 per year. Wilma
Patty, At the Jennings web site you will find a link to two of their funeral home books. I think they cover about 1957 to 1983. Fentress Courier doesn't have an online obituary site, and I think an out of state subscription is about $25. You can email them at FENTRESS COURIER fencourier@twlakes.net and they might be able to answer your question more directly and accurately. Hello list I am researching info on Mary Stepp, w/o Wm Meremon Johnson. They were md abt 1858. first child was Elizabeth b. abt 1859, then a son, Wm Meremon "Cooney" Johnson Jr b. abt 1861. I found two Mary Stepps' in the 1850 Fentress Co census. A Mary Step age 8 in the HH of Thomas and Mary Hix. Thus she was b abt 1842. Next door is the other Mary Step age 4 in the HH of her father, John Step. Thus, b. 1858 So one of the Marys' has to be the wife of Wm Johnson. By looking at the dates of birth and marriage and birth dates of Childen, the Mary Stepp in the HH of Thomas Hix has be the w/o Wm Johnson for she would have been age 16/17, whereas the Mary Stepp, d/ John would have only been abt 12/13 yrs old. Can anyone confirm this info? Who is the Mary Stepp age 8 in the HH of Thomas Hix age 69 and Mary Hix age 51? Any help/info or comments would certainly be appreciated! Thanks JW Garrett
Willie, Thanks for putting the link on. I found three I had been looking for. I suppose you have to go to the library and look through the microfilm for years further back. Do you know if The Fentress Courier has an online site for obits, and the address and price for a subscription for out of state? Ronald, Try this link to Jennings Funeral Homes' Obituary Archives. http://www.jenningsfh.com/archive.htm To my knowledge, however Mundy's Funeral Homes does not have an online obituary archive. Hi Fabian, Mary Elizabeth Blake and John Stewart were my grandparents. My mother Avo was their daughter. They both died when mom was 10 or 11. Mom used to tell us stories about Wolf River and the things her mother and her grandmother talked about. I can't remember who mom said had the indian baby but I have heard her talk about it. She said the woman was captured by the indians and when the men came home from the war--they went to get her. The indian let her go but wouldn't let her have the child. Mom said the mother would walk to see the little boy and it would take her all day. I have heard that Joe Blake was an Indian I've never been able to prove it but I've always heard this. His mother was born in GA and turned up in TN somewhere around 1830. Some census has her as Dorcus Blakley, one as Bleakley, and I believe there was one as Dorcus Blakeslee. Linda has a military record of one son that says his mother's maiden name was Dorcus Laury or Lawry. She said the name was hard to make out but she thinks that is what it is. James, I seem to have copied the Campbell County census data into my various databases under the notes section of the families involved. I don't think I can recall and recover all of it. However, Campbell County GENWEB site has the census information online.
