    1. Fentress County to Indiana Migration
    2. Anna Bertram
    3. Ron, Little family farms, largely worked by hand, no longer could support a family, especially after the soil wore out from lack of modern farming methods. The industrialized north offered jobs with cash money that could support a family. Muncie, Indiana, and Dayton, Ohio, received many of the working people from Fentress Co., TN and surrounding counties. These cities were not over a one day drive away so there still could be ties to home. I don't know when the migration started for sure, but believe World War II was a turning point. I know my husband's 4 brother's-in-law all went "up north" to these two cities to earn a living and rear their families. Only one came back home to live. Anna Bertram abertram@heartoftn.net phone 615-765-5357 ----- Original Message ----- From: Ron Smith Over the past I've noticed many obits posted by Brenda, Willie, and others that have MANY families from Fentress county that have migrated to Muncie, Indiana and other areas of Indiana - mine included. Do any of you know when this all started, the reason it started, who started it, and why Indiana? I know my paternal Smith family all were born in Fentress county and were farmers but ended up near Richmond, Ind. (where I was born) shortly after World War II. Were there any others that migrated north earlier than that? What about the Great Depression? Were there other families that migrated during this time frame? I'm just curious as to how everyone seemed to end up in one area so far away. I know this is probably how many people ended up in Fentress and other surrounding areas that migrated from VA & NC. Many families left areas together to settle in other areas - they helped each other build homes, barns, and get the farm land cleared. But, many of the TN families were farmers and went north for manufacturing jobs. My dad worked as a "Tenant farmer" for years in Indiana, bouncing from one farm to another every few years. He eventually found a job in manufacturing and retired as a Tool & Die Maker for Alcoa in Richmond, Ind. Anyone have a story they can share about their family migrating to another area of the country and why?

    3. Thelma, Harmon Bates Smith whom Harmon Smith Lane was named after in Alpine, was b. March 24, 1906 d. June 29, 1989 buried Green Hill, Alpine. Married Velva Cooper, buried Green Hill, Alpine. They had 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. Neither were ever married before or after spouses death. The house they lived in is the first one on the lane, still there, has been remodeled. The lane makes a loop around, and comes back out. My granpa Milton Smith lived on down the next farm. But I haven't connected the two yet, working on it. 2. Hi, The name was Dorothy Long Bray and Wilker Bray. Wilkers brother in law, a Goodman owned a Grocery Store there. They lived on side of road and Wilker worked in the coal mines. Goodman owned a store in Oliver Springs also. They are all gone now. 3 years ago, my brother, Bill Clifton, Bitsy and I took a picnic and went to Sgt. Yorks home, cemetery, and park. I was swinging and fell out of the swing!!! This delighted Bill!!! I like all of that part of the world. Have you been to Muddy Pond? Those Mts. and water reminds me of Norway when we studied Geography years ago. I have a friend who takes me various places when I visit Tn. I plan to go back in Aug. We started a two room school reunion 4 years ago, Westel School Reunion in Cumb. Co. near Rockwood. We have former students attend from various states, all of the teachers are now deceased, we are the older generation now!!!! Thanks again. Eddie

    2. Eddie Who is your sister and when did she live in Devonia? It almost don't exist now. Trees have grown to the road. I could barely see the metal bridge work from the road.. I also lived in Fork Mountain which really don't exist anymore. I did find the area where our houses sat. We had lived in a double. It had our house on one side and another family lived in the other side. It sat on stilts on the rear and was actually in the creek. The creek had washed away the bank and it was under our house. When it rained hard the creek would swell like a river. Logs would float down. The noise was real scary and we would go across the road to neighbors. It sat way high on a hill...No flood could get us. After they moved we squatted the house on the hill......Guess what I live on a hill now..No flood could get me<G>Gotta watch those torados though. 3. Milly, I think Bolted Meal was a finely crushed and sifted meal. It was made from corn, however, not wheat, which would make flour. I'm sure that the "York's Special" Bolted Meal was ground in the York grist mill. The mill did grind wheat to make flour too. But this required a different set of grinding wheels, called rollers, that ground the wheat into the very fine powdery flour. I'm not sure, but Bolted Meal could have been used as a substitute for flour by those who couldn't or didn't grow wheat. 3. Milly, Those precious letters are held close to the heart aren't they. When are you planning on going down? Maudie (Young) Hancock lived in the little store for a while, she passed in 2002. She was a really sweet women. My step-grandfather Milton Smith's farm is on Harmon Smith also. His grandson lives on the farm now, but none of the orginal buildings are left. There was an old oak tree that stood there, but it went down in a storm a couple of years ago. The last time I was there, I could still see the old house in my mind, and all of us youngster taken baths on the screened in back porch. Funny how things go, Grannie's (my moma's mother) second marriage was to granpa Milton, who was not blood relation, but his first wife (who died) Fanny Newberry was my Daddy's relation. And my first granpa was a Smith also, and he and Milton were not related. It makes a line hard to follow, so I have two Smith lines I cannot connect yet.
