Since we are on the Smith line perhaps someone might be able to help me with this one. Anderson Allen Smith b. ca. 1800 marr. ca. 1830 Sarah Slaven b. ca 1803 buried in Chimney Rocks/Slaven Cemetery Scott Co., Tn. Thanks for any input. Ann cbrotzge@bullitt.net
Hi all, I have begun researching my son-in-law's family. He & his family have remained in the Franklin, Macon Co. area of N.C. His grandmother told me about some of the Angel's going to Tn., but she knew nothing more. She was not into genealogy. Do you think this is a possible connection? Thanks, Ann
Have been following this discussion with interest as I'm still trying to find RIGNEY Mountain which apparently is now called something else. I believe it was in the border area of what was once where the counties of Fentress (TN), Clinton (KY), and Wayne (KY) came together. I am looking for it to give me a place to look for graves of early ancestors, marked or unmarked. Part of the possible land where it could be is now Pickett Co., TN. It was not just mountains that were named for people. Roads, fields, hollows, and creeks, were among the land marks named for our ancestors. Even in recent years the town of Allardt in Fentress County, TN renamed (or named) roads and streets. It is my understanding it was done on a fee basis. Anyone could name a street for themselves or an ancestor for a fee, and on a first come first serve basis. The road where my husband was born and reared is now known by the name of a fairly new resident. In the rural Tennessee county where we live our farm is still known to the older locals as "The Arch Todd Place". We have owned and lived on it for 30 years and Mr. Todd has been dead about 50 years, but the name goes on. It's an interesting subject. I think someone could do a thesis on how places get names and how the names change, or stay the same, over a period of time. Hey Fabian, Thank you, I checked these and none of them matched who he had been married to prior my grandmother, but I heard from my Aunt yesterday and she said his daughter-n-law is still living and she gave me her phone number and address, and I will contact her. He is buried on the homeplace. I will put the info on when I get it in case my Smith line matches other Smith families. Again thank you. It is something how those stories stay with us. There is a place near Sheboygan that is called Silent Point by the locals, a little boy who was mute, slipped from a cliff on his way up to see his granpa who was manning a lighthouse. They say at certain times they can see him running the shores and cliffs still making his way up to the lighthouse. His family continues to man the lighthoue after all these years. Thank you all for the family names of the mountains. That is very interesting. So, if a family owned the land, is that the reason for that part of the mountain receiving it's name? I know of Walker, Alpine, Cub. Some of the names have stayed others have changed. I always wondered why and how they got their names. Here is Wisconsin what I call hills (here they call them mountains or points) are named after Indian Chiefs, tribes or who ever was in the area at the time that lived there and many have sacred burial grounds. It is sad how the state wants to make these areas "productive" for gain, but many have rallied to help protect these precious areas. I won't want a highway through the cemetery my family is buried in. We have lost enough history, and I want my children and on down to know their roots, kin and reason we are where we are today. Again thank you. Henen, Squire Angel's last name had several spellings: 1n 1822 his last name was spelt Angelea, 1830/33 Angel, 1840, Angla, 1850 Angely. I have, off and on been trying to research this Squire Angel b. abt 1799 from NC. Somewhere I found "The Anglea Family in America". It explains that the pronuciation an'jel was derivd from French 'engel', meaning 'a mesenger' and the latter part of the name 'lea was probably added after the family migrated to England. A'lea is an old English field or eadow where the family may have lived, hence the derivation of the latter part of the name. Th report explains that this is only an assumption and may have some entirely different meaning. Bardsley's Dicionary of English and Welsh surnames lists 'Angel', Angell', Angle', Angela' and Angelina.' French,Latin, and Greek: ('angele or 'engel, 'angle and 'angelos) respectively. In trying to identify his parents and his place of origin, I know that since both Squire Angel and his wife Mary Polly Storie were from NC, I believe that Squire Angel may have met Mary Pollie Storie in Wilkes Co., NC were Mary Polly was from. Again, there could be a possibility that Squire Angel was in Ky when he met Mary Polly before he came to Overton aft. 1820. Her father, Joshua was in Ky before he moved to Overton Co. before 1820. I noticed that Squire Angel is not in Overton Co., nor is Mary Polly for she is not in the HH of Joshua in 1820. They are apparently md abt 1819 according to the birth date of Catherine Angel b. 1820. I cannot locate him yet in 1820. They could have md in either NC, KY, or in TN. I have yet to find any documentation. Any thoughts or feedback? I can name a couple, Clark Mt after the family of Clarks,. and Huddlestons Knob after Huddleston family both in Picket Co., Coleman's Mt in Fentress after Coleman, and of course Angel Mt, also in Fentress, now Buck Mt. Gary, yes, that is why the Mt was called Angel Mt. It was named so because it was the area in which Squire Angel settled shortly after 1820. Of course now it is called Buck Mt. He and wife Polly, is buried on home place of Jess Crisps' parents somewhere in a field. I was given th directions, but yet to find the markers. TN Both buried in Frogge's Chapel Cemetery, Pall Mall, TN I had no parents listed for Cordia. You say d/o Nancy Jane Crabtree Brummet. Do you know who this Nancy Jane's parents were? Know the first name of her Brummet husband or is this an illegitimate child? Thanks, Fabian MPiros1120@aol.com schrieb: > Patty > > Haven't made up my mind yet when to go. What a neat story. Thank you for sharing. Helen
Some of you might find this interesting: When I was a child growing up in Jamestown, we would go down Angel Mountain to go fishing. I remember being told this story as a child: A little girl was lost on the mountain and was never found. Sometimes at night people would hear her singing. They told me that is why they called it Angel Mountain! And I believed it! My Grandpa Carl Fowler was a Tall Tale teller!!
Helen, Squire Angel's last name had several spellings: 1n 1822 his last name was spelt Angelea, 1830/33 Angel, 1840, Angla, 1850 Angely. I have, off and on been trying to research this Squire Angel b. abt 1799 from NC. Sounds like me. Somewhere I found "The Anglea Family in America". It explains that the pronunciation an'jel was derived from French 'engel', meaning 'a mesenger' and the latter part of the name 'lea was probably added after the family migrated to England. A'lea is an old English field or meadow where the family may have lived, hence the derivation of the latter part of the name. The report explains that this is only an assumption and may have some entirely different meaning. This is most interesting and I have not heard this before. I know that Angely is a name found in Italy from another researcher. Her sister has lived there and said it was a rather common name. Bardsley's Dicionary of English and Welsh surnames lists 'Angel', Angell', Angle', Angela' and Angelina.' French,Latin, and Greek: ('angele or 'engel, 'angle and 'angelos) respectively. Then this may explain why I got nowhere trying to make Italians of them, huh? In trying to identify his parents and his place of origin, I know that since both Squire Angel and his wife Mary Polly Storie were from NC, I believe that Squire Angel may have met Mary Pollie Storie in Wilkes Co., NC where Mary Polly was from. I have not researched NC at all for the Angels. I can't recollect what I have, right off, but will try to remember to find it. Please remind me in a couple of weeks if I have not answered this. They could have md in either NC, KY, or in TN. I have yet to find any documentation. Any thoughts or feedback? I don't believe I have any documentation for their marriage. Or really much about them at all. I do remember reading about a Bradshaw trial in one of those OC publications - or maybe it was a FC one. Squire Angel and a Story or two were witnesses. Do you know the one I am talking about? You know, there may not be any markers! I've never been back there although Robbie and his brother both told me where it was. Mom and I used to visit cemeteries - way back before we had the Internet - but some were so far out that we were afraid to go there because of snakes. I'm amazed how well kept those country cemeteries are. Helen
