List Recently there was an address for the York web site listed - which I have misplaced. Could someone repeat it please? Thanks, sue
John Culver, b. 1792-93 in NC, was on the census rolls in Fentress County, TN from 1830 through 1860. He had a wife, Nancy, and several children. In 1863, he was allegedly killed by Champ Ferguson. In 1870, on the Clinton County, KY census, there is a John Culver, age 78, b. NC, his wife, Martha, age 37, b. TN, and a son, James, age 4, b. KY. In 1880, on the Ozark County, MO census, there is a John Culver, age 87, b. MO, his wife, Martha, age 48, b. TN, son James, age 14, b. KY, and daughter Ellen, age 8, b. KY. There is also an Arion Solimon, age 25, b. TN, a brother-in-law. I regard the birthplace of MO after John's name as a minor glitch. The Arion Solimon is Aaron Solomon, my grandfather and brother of Martha. They were both children of Moses and Nancy Solomon, residents of Fentress County at least from 1840 to 1850 and probably 1857. Nancy is believed to have died about 1857-58; Moses remarried in Wayne County, KY in 1860 and is there on the 1860 census and never found again. The 1880 MO census is how I first discovered who Martha had married, by searching for Aaron Solomon. One Culver researcher says that John died in 1878 and that he is buried in the Albertson Family Cemetery next to his wife, Nancy. I don't know if that tombstone has a birthdate on it or not. I wonder if this could be another John Culver, b. about 1832-33, the son of the 1793 John Culver. How could he die in 1878 if he was killed in 1863? I have posted this before and got little reaction other than the statement that John Culver died in 1878. So what are the possibilities? If he lived until 1878, then where was he on the 1870 census? Certainly not on the Fentress County census. Was his death faked in 1863? If he died in either 1863 or 1878, then who is the John Culver mentioned in the above two censuses? There are too many possibilities that John and Martha knew each other in Fentress County, and too many similarities in other information for me to believe anything other than this is the same John Culver listed in Fentress County from 1830 through 1860, despite the fact that he is alleged to have died on two different occasions. I have found no marriage record in KY or any other place, by the way, for John and Martha.
"I can't find a husband for NANCY CRABTREE. She is listed in Fentress Co 1900 as single. Has her having 11 children with 7 living. In her household was 4 children and her mother DORCAS CRABTREE. So if she married a BURNETT it would have been after 1900. I can't find her in 1910." My g-grandmother was Nancy CRABTREE b. 1845 d/o Hiram & Manerva Delk Crabtree. She married Robert STEWART. They had 11 children. In 1900 she would have been a widow. Her sister Winnie Crabtree b. ca. 1850 m. James Barnett. I have a Dorcas CRABTREE b. 1836 d/o James CRABTREE. Are these connected to the ones you are talking of? How? Linda
Hi JW & Sarah, I don't know about the age on tax list other than what the gentleman in Warren Co. told me. The tax list I copied from a book I found at the library, it didn't list the sons of Charles unless the names following his were the sons, if that is the case then Peter would be the son of Charles. However Charles did not list him in his will. I have copies of all of the land records in Wilkes Co. for Peter and his sons, also have the Storie land records. While at the court house in Warren Co. wrote down Joseph Lindsay will and other information as they will not let you make copies. Did not get a chance to check tax or land records while there. Had not seen the information on Dobbs Co. think that is up by Lenoir, NC (not sure) which would also be around the Wilkes area. Had seen the information about Abbotts Creek, but do not have copies of them. Think some of the other Riggan family members owned land there also. Trying to do some of this from memory but think I will have to pull out some of my notes. Mind seems to be the first to go as you get older! (grin) Sarah thank you for sharing about the records in Rowan Co. do you have copies of them and would you share? Had not heard about Charles and Peter calling each other cousin, but had heard that John Henninger Reagan had stated he was a cousin to my ggrandfather Joel. If this is true then it would connect at least 2 of the lines. I will be glad to send copies of land records or any other information I have. As for Thomas believe he is the same one that moved into TN, but do not know who his parents were. Pat
Hi List I am trying to find where my grgrgrandma ARTEMIA McGEE MILLER is buried. I just may never find out. She was born about 1814/ 1824 and lived in Fentress Co until before 1905. In 1880 Artemia lived with her daughter TRANQUILLA and son in law EDDLEY DELK. Where are they in 1900??? Did they move to Texas??? If so where.? Ann There is a Thomas M Angel listed in 1850 Macon Co., NC census. Are you familiar with this Thomas Angel? Pat, Reading your note in regards to Peter Reagan Sr. you explianed that the gentleman in Warren Co. NC court archives said Peter would have been 18 since he was listed on a tax list. I recently found out that in Colonial times, the Head of HH was at least 21 being taxed, and the males in the HH "16" yrs and over were also taxed. So since Peter was listed in 1766 tax list (IF listed for the FIRST time) he would have been 16. Therefore that would put his birthdate at abt 1750. You stated that Peter was listed on both 1766 and 1771 tx list in Bute. Was h the head of HH or was he in the HH of Charles and sons? How many sons did this Charles have according to tax list? Pat, I have only info on Peter Reagan Sr back to 1779 when he is in Wilkes Co. NC buying a land grant 100 acres on Naked creek. If you have additional info on him and his family/parents prior to 1779, including the Charles and Henry, & Thomas Reagan you mention, I would appreciate any material you can share with me. Thanks! My fathers side of the family is Story and his line came out of VA also. As of yet have not tied the Joshua Storie and the Thomas Story lines together. Although there was a Thomas Storie in Wilkes Co. NC. There were Guins, Storie, Reagan etc that were in Wilkes Co. before going into Fentress, think all of them went there about the same time. Think I know the Peter you are speaking of, is it the one that was the son of Michael? After talking with you about this a couple of years ago, tried to find some information. And best I can determine is that this Michael was supposed to have come out of Maryland. Have not found any proof of this, talked to a couple of researchers and that is what they thought. Found our Peter Reagan on the 1766 tax list in Bute Co. and then again in 1771, on the list it said Charles and Sons and then named some of the Riggan/Reagan thought possibly that Peter was his son. Asked the gentleman in charge of the archives in Warren Co. court house and he said that if he was on the tax list then he was already 18 yrs old which moved his birth date back to at least 1748. After the 1771 tax list then found him in Rowan Co. on a tax list (which I have misplaced) and signed up for Rev. War in 1774. With him in this area at the time was Thomas Reagan. Believe he was living in Wilkes area but at that time it was Rowan. Jemima Reagan daughter of Charles Reagan in VA think she married George Oliver, but she named one of her sons Peter and think George and Jemima moved into Orange Co. NC which would have been close to Wilkes. The Henry Reagan in Overton Co. was the grandson of this Charles Reagan. An this same Henry was witness to land records for our Reagan family. So our Peter Reagan has lived around the Charles Reagan line and the Daniel Regan line. But still cannot figure out which line he is from or if these 2 lines are connected. Have land records for the Storie family in Wilkes, if you will give me your address or P.O. Box will send what information I have. Have a great day! J.W., I will offer what I have found in various sources in hunting for Peter Reagan. Pat may have other or fuller details. I would love to have corrections and additions. I can't figure out how the Charles and Henry fit in exactly. And I don't know anything about Thomas.: Peter Riggin is listed with one white poll in the 1771 Bute Co, NC tax list. Peter Rigan and John Bowdown were witnesses December 22, 1772, in DB5 p. 288 Warren Co, NC, to John Rigan of Bute Co, to James Baskett, 25 pounds VA money for 121 acres in Bute Co on BS Great Fishing Creek, crossing at Piney Branch adj. Williams. Proved by John Bowdown, Bute August Court, 1775, Ben McCulloch, C.C. Reg: 12 October, 1775 by Jas. Johnson, P. R. In 1777-79 in Dobbs Co, NC Peter Riggins sold land to Micajah Hart (11:412). Few records are available for Dobbs Co, NC, but there is a list of land grants and an index to the now lost deeds. Micajah Hart is listed in 1780 tax list of Dobbs as in District 6 (near Snow Hill and Hookerton). Perhaps that is the site of the Riggins piece of land. 1779: Peter Riggins had 250 acres on Rich Fork of Abbotts Creek adjoining Jesse Gilliam and John Roberts for Compliment. From Rowan Co Vacant Land Entries 1778-1789. Lord Granville had a 60 mile strip along the border of NC with the south edge about the place where Rowan County north line is today. Granville died in 1763. Settlers had no legal title until the NC land office opened in 1778. Deed were recorded 15 years later than when people first settled in some cases. Land entry for Peter Riggen, Entry #2140, March 20, 1779--entering 250 acres of land in Rowan Co., NC on the Rich Fork of Abbott's Creek joining Jesse Gillom and John Roberts for compliment. Land entry for Peter Riggen, Entry #2844, January 29, 1785--entering 210 acres of land in Rowan Co on Jamey's Creek, waters of Abbott's Creek, joining Richardson Owen at the southwest corner. (Today on I-85 South in Rowan County Abbots creek is named.) November, 1779 Richard Jordan Mitchell and Hugh Leek lived adjacent to Peter Reggins in Rowan Co. According to one source Peter Reagan Sr. and Charles Reagan b. 1734 in Shenandoah Co, VA (d. Blount Co, TN in 1815) called each other "cousin."
I have no idea if the Angels from Macon Co., NC are related to the Tennessee ones in Pickett and Fentress Co. Wish I did - sorry! It is entirely possible though, don't you think? Helen

Jo, I have found the Lindsey family (Joseph Lindsey the father) in Warren Co, NC, and his daughter Rebecca married Peter Reagan. Some sources guess at McCart but I am sure that this is the Peter Reagan and Rebecca who end up in Fentress Co, TN. Joseph Lindsey: Listed in the NC State census of 1784-87 in the Granville county section with 2 males 21-60 and 4 females. One slave. In the 1787 taxes of Warren Co, NC he is listed in Captain Daniel's Districe with 420 acres and white poll and 1 Black poll. Listed in Bute Co, NC in 1768 and was on a list to help build a road. Listed as a trustee in the transfer of property for the Presbyterian Congregation in Granville County, NC July 7, 1767. Joseph Linsey took the Oath of Allegiance in the Nutbush District of Granville Co, NC, in 1778. Abstracts of Warren Co, NC Will Book 7: 203--Will of Joseph Lindsey, 5 March, 1793; Nov, CT. 1794. Names: Wife Rachael; Sons Laban and Caleb (Extr); Daughters: Rebecca Ragan, Mary Hartgrove Searcy, Zellah Ragan, Milly Thurman, Darkas Lindsey, Sarah Lindsey, and Fanny Watkins. Co)Extr. Friend Dennis Paschal. Wit: Anderson Paschall (Jurat), Mary Paschall, and Dennis Paschall (Jurat). I hope this helps. I suspect that you and I are related through the Wright connection too. Sarah

Pat, Do you have all of these families (Guin, Storie, Reagan, and a lot more that look familiar like Lindsey and Bowden ) who went to Overton/Fentress in the early 1800s coming together in the northern parts of early Rowan Co, NC (probably in Lord Granville's tract in which deeds were not recorded until after1778 even though they had been settling there any time after 1763 at Lord Granville's death) before they came to TN? Did they all get land from John McIver of Fairfax, VA, as did Peter Reagan? And would that have been before they left NC, or did they just come upon the opportunity after they got to TN? The deed is recorded in the early Overton Co, TN deed books. Does anyone know about John McIver? Did you find any evidence that Peter Reagan was a descendant of Michael Reagan? I speculated about that, but I haven't found anything except that Michael Reagan had a son named Peter, and no one else seems to have that name in the line. It would be interesting to see if there is any proof of those names in NC or VA. Thanks for the help. Sarah

Thanks for the help, Pat. Do you have the Storie family traced back into NC and VA? I am still looking for clues for where Peter Reagan came from in the mid-1700s before he turns up in Bute Co, NC. I've been driven to trying to find the source of allied families. The Bowdens come from Isle of Wight, VA. A very large number of Fentress Co names are in that Bute Co, NC, area in the late 1700s. Reading the deed books for Bute, Granville, and Warren Counties is startling. Any clues? Sarah
