Sarah, Think I owe you an apology, a few years ago I was kind of short with you in one of my e-mails. It was not an intentional thing nor did I mean for it to sound that way. Have no excuse but at the time one of my sisters had a terminal illness and was trying to help take care of her and at the same time my youngest daughter ran into some hard times and had my 2 youngest grandsons aged 4 & 7 at that time. I have felt very bad about this ever since and hope you will except my apology. We are from the same line my ggrandfather Joel was brother to your Susannah (think I have this right.) The book you are talking about was that John's bible? I used to visit Wilma and talk to her by phone she and my mother were 1st cousins and she always said I was her 1st cousin once removed. Also have all of her books but 2. Vanlandingham researchers think Nancy was married to George Vanlandingham son of Dawson. I cannot agree or disagree with this as I have not found any proof of it. Do know that Nancy's father James was married 1st to Mary Magdalene Pile and they had 3 or 4 sons and then he married Elizabeth (possibly Vanlandingham) and had Nancy and her siblings. Would have to find my copies of court records I found at the library, but think John also had a daughter Nancy. Sarah these are just my thoughts, but have wondered if Nancy was married to a Vanlandingham why would she marry under Cauthon? And if she is the one that married Peter why didn't she name any of her children after her side of the family? This is 2 of the reasons I had reservations about our Peter Reagan being married to Nancy. You have the same children for Peter Jr. as I do. Noticed that your birth year for Caleb was 1799, a few years ago another researcher had that birth year also. Think this possible but have always put 1801 what Wilma had, since Peter married in 1800 (?). In a book by A. R. Hogue it shows that Peter had another man stand in for him in War of 1812 (think the man's name was Skipper) and Peter would be credited for serving. I do not have a will for Peter Sr. or Jr. Wilma stated that she had hired someone to clear out the old homestead and a lot of family information was thrown away and burned before she realized what they were throwing away. Let me know your thoughts, enjoy having someone to hash out these question with. Have a great day! Pat
My apologies to those who know Mrs. Wilma Reagan Pinkley, whose names I got reversed in an e-mail concerning her family history articles. I was too intent on the Reagan line. Is Mrs. Pinkley ok? I only met her once but I have great respect for her work. Sarah
Pat, In reading your mail, I see that Charles Reagan Jr md Priscella Lindsey. Our Peter Reagan Sr md Rebecca Lindsay. Both Priscella and Rebecca are sisters, d/o Joseph Lindsey. Chances are Charles Reagen Jr and Peter Reagan are either cousins or brothers. It would help to view the will of Charles Ragan Sr to confirm his children/sons. Good evening, Can anyone tell me who Joe Hedgcoth's grandparents were? He was the son of Roy Hedgcoth. Thanks so much, Dusti --
Pat, Unless there are a lot of mistakes among my branch of the family, the Peter Reagan that married Nancy Cauthon is the son of Peter Reagan and Rebecca Lindsey. Of course it is hard to tell about all of these names without wills. Do you have any for Peter Reagan? Most of what I have came from articles by Wilma Pinkley Reagan. (She has a magnificent book that was John Reagan's.) I have taken some of her work and gone from there. Here is a piece of record for Nancy Cauthon Reagan from the Vanlandingham genealogists: Nancy Cauthon married a son of Dawson Vanlandingham about 1788 in Warren Co, NC. Peter Riggin was her second husband. The child Winny is mentioned in the Nov. 1793 Will Book #7 entry. Will of John Cauthorn 26 June, 1794; Nov. Ct. 1794. Wife Sarah. Extrx; his three children by her, all minors: Polly, John, and Thomas. Mentions land bought from his brother Thos. Does not indicate relationship but names Winny Vanlandingham dtr. of Nancy Vanlandingham. Extr: Friend Dennis Paschall. Wit: John Short, (Jurat), Dennis Paschall(Jurat) and Nancy Vanlandingham. Apparently Winney Vanlandingham was left in Warren Co, NC, as Nancy and Peter Reagan went west. There is a detailed version of how that was determined on the website. Here is a land transaction from Deed book D of Overton Co, TN. Peter Reagan Sr. from John McIver--350 acres Peter Reagan Jr. from John McIver--352 acres Here is a land transaction in Fentress: #3--February 1, 1825 Peter Ragen Sr. to Peter Ragen Jr. for $50 102 acres beginning on the south side of Obey River at the lower end of the bottom on which Peter Sr. now lives Here are the children I have for Peter Reagan and Nancy Cauthon. Caleb L. seems to be named for Rebecca Lindsey Reagan's brother. My family is from John Reagan. John Reagan's first son was named Peter. Children of PETER REAGAN and NANCY CAUTHON are: 2. i. JOHN6 REAGAN, b. February 08, 1802, North Carolina; d. October 05, 1876, Little Crab, Tennessee. 3. ii. WILIAM BILLY REAGAN, b. 1811; d. 1895. 4. iii. CALEB L. REAGAN, b. 1799, NC; d. Seneca, MO. 5. iv. CHARLES REAGAN, b. June 04, 1803, NC. 6. v. ELIZABETH REAGAN, b. 1805, NC. vi. JOEL LUCY REAGAN, b. 1807, NC; m. MARGARET Here are some more bits and pieces. I apologize for not being able to tame the computer to get things copied in a more manageable way. I have no idea whether these are all about the same Peter Reagan. I haven't been aware of a son of Charles named Peter who was around this area too. It will take all of us and more to figure out these Reagans. March 12, 1830, Peter Reagan lived on Crabb Creek. Peter Reagan, clergyman, is listed as a resident of Fentress County, TN, in 1838 and attests to a man's truth in his Revolutionary War application. The application was for John Hood, #S1534 April, 1833. Peter Reagan marked his name with X Bought 153 acres approximately 10 miles west of Jamestown in 1819. Enlisted Men, War of 1812 From TN: Peter Ragan, Pvt. Col S. Wear, Capt. Joseph Calloway. Mounted Infantry

JW are you researching the Janes/Jaynes line also. Have a great day! Pat
Pat, in regards to the Tax list, Charles Reagan, if he had sons, would normally be listed after him in parenthesis as a tithe, same for Tithables and Personal Property tax. If indeed Peter is listed in Charles Reagans 1766 HH, Peter would have been listed as a tithe (at age sixteen). then by 1771 Peter would be on his own Head of HH at age 21 listed on 1771 Tax list. Thus his birthdate would be abt 1750. The tax list I copied from a book I found at the library, it didn't list the sons of Charles unless the names following his were the sons, if that is the case then Peter would be the son of Charles. However Charles did not list him in his will. I have copies of all of the land records in Wilkes Co. for Peter and his sons, also have the Storie land records. While at the court house in Warren Co. wrote down Joseph Lindsay will and other information as they will not let you make copies. Did not get a chance to check tax or land records while there. Had not seen the information on Dobbs Co. think that is up by Lenoir, NC (not sure) which would also be around the Wilkes area. Had seen the information about Abbotts Creek, but do not have copies of them. Think some of the other Riggan family members owned land there also. Trying to do some of this from memory but think I will have to pull out some of my notes. Mind seems to be the first to go as you get older! (grin) Sarah thank you for sharing about the records in Rowan Co. do you have copies of them and would you share? Had not heard about Charles and Peter calling each other cousin, but had heard that John Henninger Reagan had stated he was a cousin to my ggrandfather Joel. If this is true then it would connect at least 2 of the lines. I will be glad to send copies of land records or any other information I have. As for Thomas believe he is the same one that moved into TN, but do not know who his parents were. Sarah, From reading your info. regarding Peter Reagan/Riggins of NC there must have been 2 Peter Reagans/Riggins in NC. You mention a Peter Riggins in Dobbs Co., NC 1777-79. He then is in Rowan Co., NC 1779. In 1785 Peter is still in Rowan Co., NC. The Peter Reagan I have been researching enlists in Rev War 1774 in Rowan Co., NC then is in Wilkes Co., NC on Naked Creek area from at least 1779 till the time he moves to Overton Co., TN aft 1806. Possible cousins? Or am I missing/overlooking something? Thanks JW Garrett -----Original Message----- From: Sarah Beale Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 10:16 PM To: TNFENTRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNFENTRE-L] Storie family--Reagan connection J.W., I will offer what I have found in various sources in hunting for Peter Reagan. Pat may have other or fuller details. I would love to have corrections and additions. I can't figure out how the Charles and Henry fit in exactly. And I don't know anything about Thomas.: Peter Riggin is listed with one white poll in the 1771 Bute Co, NC tax list. Peter Rigan and John Bowdown were witnesses December 22, 1772, in DB5 p. 288 Warren Co, NC, to John Rigan of Bute Co, to James Baskett, 25 pounds VA money for 121 acres in Bute Co on BS Great Fishing Creek, crossing at Piney Branch adj. Williams. Proved by John Bowdown, Bute August Court, 1775, Ben McCulloch, C.C. Reg: 12 October, 1775 by Jas. Johnson, P. R. In 1777-79 in Dobbs Co, NC Peter Riggins sold land to Micajah Hart (11:412). Few records are available for Dobbs Co, NC, but there is a list of land grants and an index to the now lost deeds. Micajah Hart is listed in 1780 tax list of Dobbs as in District 6 (near Snow Hill and Hookerton). Perhaps that is the site of the Riggins piece of land. 1779: Peter Riggins had 250 acres on Rich Fork of Abbotts Creek adjoining Jesse Gilliam and John Roberts for Compliment. From Rowan Co Vacant Land Entries 1778-1789. Lord Granville had a 60 mile strip along the border of NC with the south edge about the place where Rowan County north line is today. Granville died in 1763. Settlers had no legal title until the NC land office opened in 1778. Deed were recorded 15 years later than when people first settled in some cases. Land entry for Peter Riggen, Entry #2140, March 20, 1779--entering 250 acres of land in Rowan Co., NC on the Rich Fork of Abbott's Creek joining Jesse Gillom and John Roberts for compliment. Land entry for Peter Riggen, Entry #2844, January 29, 1785--entering 210 acres of land in Rowan Co on Jamey's Creek, waters of Abbott's Creek, joining Richardson Owen at the southwest corner. (Today on I-85 South in Rowan County Abbots creek is named.) November, 1779 Richard Jordan Mitchell and Hugh Leek lived adjacent to Peter Reggins in Rowan Co. According to one source Peter Reagan Sr. and Charles Reagan b. 1734 in Shenandoah Co, VA (d. Blount Co, TN in 1815) called each other "cousin." ==== TNFENTRE Mailing List ==== Fentress County List has the best, most helpful and friendly people on any List...You ALL are the greatest.....
