Pat, Thanks for the paragraph relating to service in the War of 1812. I'm assuming that this is the same James Findley whose daughter married John Reagan. There is much Findley research in Augusta Co, VA and the expert on Findley is the person in charge of that Rootsweb site. I have e-mailed her in the past and she can't figure out where James Findley fits in. Maybe you have more information and you and she can figure it out. But I just know he has to be part of that crowd. Here is something about James Findley: Petition of Inhabitants of Overton Co, TN to the General Assembly of TN . . .Feel disposed to have a part in the present war with Britannic Majesty's allies--Creek Nation of Indians . . . James Finley, Samuel Miller, John Miller, John Kennedy 1813 Overton Legislative Petition for Mounted men under Col Stephen Copeland. signed by James Finley, John Kennedy, and James Smith. I don't know whether this is ours. I tried to track back into VA and think it might be that James' father was William and his grandfather John, but those are guesses. William and John both have records in the Rev. War. I have put these other names from the same lists (Miller, Kennedy--connected to Findleys from VA, and Smith--connected to another side of my family and Fentress Co) because they turn up in my family line about the same time. They may have nothing to do with our descendants. Maybe just chance that they have similar surnames. I know what you mean about having to dig through records. Even a computer doesn't help me post and sort all of the possible connections. Sometimes it seems useless and endless.
Milly I do not have the same children as Brenda, I missed Freeman b. 1899, however Cordie is in the 1900 census too of Fentress Co. as Cordi Crabtree and she is in the household of A. B. Williams as hired, and she is 15 years old. Wilma
Milly and Brenda, Sherman (Scrooger) Burnett was married to Cora Dishman, b. abt 1904. I also have Scrooger as born abt 1904. Cora Dishman was the dau of Archie Dishman, b. 2-1873 KY, and Rebecca Ann Reno, 9-1866 TN. Scrooger and Cora did live in Muncie, but I will have to ask my mother more about it. Carlie Dishman, a sister of Cora was my step-grandmother. Yes, Sarah, I have gone as far as I can go. I believe Sampson to be possibly a brother or other relation to Moses Solomon (my great grandfather). They were living in adjacent households in 1850. They were both born in NC, Moses in 1805 and Sampson in 1815. There is this triangular (and speculative) connection between the Owen(s), Bowden and Solomon families. In 1850 Sarah Owen was living in Moses' home. We have never figured out her relationship, if any, to Moses. ----- Original Message ----- From: " Sarah Beale" <sjbeale@attglobal.net> To: <TNFENTRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: June 22, 2006 3:49 PM Subject: Re: [TNFENTRE-L] Sampson and Anna Beaty Solomon > Carletta, Have you tracked back in the Solomon line? Milly We have some sort of difference in the age of Nancy Crabtree Burnett, if I understand these e-mail right. I have Nancy born 12-25-1863 d. 6-15-1940 and I have Cordie born 1884, so Nancy would have been about 21 years old when Cordie was born, according to my records. I also have the same children that Brenda has, and one of the boys went more by the Burnett name than the Crabtree name. I also have Nancy's mother as Dorcus Crabtree, father unknown, and Dorcus was d/o James Crabtree and Nancy Huff. I only have one child listed for Cordie, Elizabeth Smith b. 1903. More comments, maybe we can get this puzzle worked. Wilma
Carletta, First,The best place to get help with the surname Beaty/Beatty or any other spelling of Beatty, is the Beatty Project 2000 both a mailing list (rootsweb.com) and a website. Website: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/main.htm I have gone through my own extensive files and although, I do have Solomons, in MO, I have no Sampson Solomons. I have lots of Owen(s) and by the Way lots of Keiths too. Nelda Nelda's websites - http://freepages.folklore.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/ yDNA tests for Hurst, Beatty, Gilpin; all male relatives
Does anyone have any information on these people after 1860? They are on the 1850 and 1860 census in Fentress County. Sampson was a witness to a deed in 1844 in Fentress County so he was there by that time. After 1860, I can't find them anywhere. They had 6 children by 1860. Two of their children were living next door to each other in Missouri on the 1880 census.
Hi Sarah, From the book One Hundred Years in the Cumberland Mountains by A.R. Hogue Charles Sevier Certificate "Monroe. February the 9th 1814" This is to certify that Peter Reagan who was ordered out of Capt. Finleys old company as one of its quota in the requisition under Division order of the 18 January, that he has furnished Jacob Skipper as a substitute equipt as the law directs and is thereby entitiled to a credit for a tour of duty for the same. Charles Sevier, 2nd Maj. 35 Regt. Dept. of M.... A few years ago I sent away for records on James Finley and Peter Sr. but they showed no records on either. Pat
Hi Brenda You have 6 children listed for NANCY J CRABTREE BURNETT but CORDELIA-CORD CRABTREE SMITH is not listed as Nancy's child. She was. In 1910 CORDIE was married to HIGH SMITH and was 35 years old. That wouls have made Nancy 12 to 14 years old according to the census ages when Cord was born. I spoke with my cousin Janet Smith granddaughter of Cord Crabtree Smith tonight. She has lived in Muncie about 50 years. She said that SHERMAN a.k.a SCOOT or SCOOCH BURNETT a HUGHES girl and had lived in Muncie at one time. I have a picture of him taken in 1940's. Probably early part. He was with my great uncle DEAN BUBBY DELK. I asked Janet if she knew who was Nancy's children's father(s). She had no idea. Excuse me for butting in here, but I have CRABTREE listed in my family records also. I have a CLARA CRABTREE, born 1897, married to Peter Counts. Any relation here to your NANCY? Also have BURNETT families from Virginia and New Jersey, who married into my NASH and Kitchell families. Thank you, Good Luck with your research. Hi Sarah, Wilma is a nice person and very keen on her family, I haven't been down for about 3 yrs now. Really need to go see her she will be 98 yrs. old on Oct 7 of this year, she and my mother were born in the same year. Remember going down there many times as a young girl and even into adulthood. I have a lot of happy childhood memories from down there. Wilma always said our family came to TN about 1818 and had never even thought about the 1812 notation in Hogue's book, they would have had to been there then. Will dig out the book and send what it says to you. Sorry I keep saying dig out and look for it, but 3 yrs ago my husband and I bought a 27 ft. travel trailer and that is what we live in on a campground, we love it. But most of information is in a storage unit and some is with me. Am never sure what is with me or in the unit. Think the last date I have is 1806 on one of the deeds, it has Peter and Nancy's name on it. I could not find Peter Jr. in census for 1800 or 1810. And haven't found him on any papers in TN before 1820 census. I didn't see the book by John you are talking about, wish I had. Agree with you we each have a lot of information and putting it together might solve our mystery. Do you know if they have papers on the War of 1812 at archives here in NC, found a Capt. James Findley and Charles Rygen from Wilkes, think this might be Peter Jrs. brother. Pat

Thank you Wilma, will check those counties. Pat
I'm not related to the Reagans that I know of but, if you check Jefferson and Grainger Cos., TN, it seems a lot of people who are in the area of Fentress, Morgan and Scott Cos. TN came from one of these counties, or had family that lived there. Wilma
Pat, Don't think twice about an apology. I never felt any offense. I'm glad we can put heads together on this. It is amazing that we have so many little bits of information. Wilma had a hand written (it looked like on canvas) book of exercises to copy that had been John Reagan's. A lot of them seemed to be math problems. I was visiting Wilma with Colleen Manz, another cousin who lives in Utah and was visiting TN. I feel very honored to have seen Wilma. If the Hogue book is correct and Peter was buying his way out of the War of 1812 in TN , then was he in TN that early? Have you found him in east TN anywhere before the land purchase in Overton/Fentress? What is the last date in Wilkes Co, NC that you have? I spent several days a few years ago in the Knoxville genealogy library. It was great fun, but these Reagans are elusive. I spent a long time in Knoxville looking at addresses for undelivered mail during those times. It will take weeks at such a place to be sure we haven't missed anything. Sarah
My computer has been down for a few weeks, so now I'm back online trying to catch up on the mailing list. I did find Nancy Crabtree married to Isaac Burnett on the 1910 Fentress County Census: (Fentress County, TN: ED# 18, District 2 (Old District #7 and #8), Page 10A, Household 177) The census is light and hard to read. - Isaac BURNETT, head, age 67, KY,KY,KY; married 3 times (looks like it shows marriage to Nancy as 1/2) - Nancy BURNETT, wife, age 47, TN,TN,TN, married 1 time; 5 children and 4 living (looks like it shows marriage time as 1/2) - Ulis G. CRABTREE, stepson, age 10, TN,KY,TN (this would be her son Ulysses Grant Crabtree) - Sherman D. CRABTREE, stepson, age 7, TN,KY,TN (he also went by the Burnett surname) Isaac Burnett (b. January 27, 1843, KY; d. October 29, 1913, buried Wolf River Cemetery, Fentress County, TN). He was the son of William Burnett (b. abt. 1817) and Elizabeth ? (b. abt. 1820). They lived in Wayne County, KY. I have Nancy Jane Crabtree (b. December 25, 1863; d. June 15, 1940, buried at Upchurch Cemetery, Fentress County, TN) as the daughter of Dorcas Crabtree (b. 3/1836, d. aft. 1900). Nancy Jane Crabtree and Isaac Burnett were married October 12, 1909 in Fentress County, TN (according to Fentress County marriage records). The children I have for Nancy Jane Crabtree are: - Claude Bascom Crabtree, born 5/1/1887 m. Laura B. Jones - Loranza Crabtree (female), born 3/1893 - Joseph Edgar (Joe) Crabtree, born 3/13/1896, d. 12/1971 - Freeman Crabtree, born 4/1899 - Ulysses Grant Crabtree, born abt. 1900 - Sherman D. (Burnett) Crabtree, born 4/23/1902, d. 8/1985 in Wayne County, KY), m. Sarah J. Jennings on 9/6/1924 in Fentress County, TN, then married Cora A. Dishman on 3/14/1926 in Fentress County, TN (after Sarah died in 1925) See the 1900 Census record (Fentress County, TN: ED# 16, District 8, Page 10A (ancestry.com page 7), Household 170) for Nancy Crabtree and her children. Her mother Dorcas Crabtree (b. 3/1836) was living with Nancy and her children. I have Dorcas Crabtree as the daughter of James Crabtree (b. 1808) and Nancy Huff (b. abt. 1814). See also the following census records for Dorcus Crabtree: 1850 Census: Fentress County, TN: District 5, Household 524 1870 Census: Clinton County, KY: District 5, Page 6, Household 44 (These census records show her birth being closer to 1838/1839) than the 1836 as shown on the 1900 census) I'm not related to these families, just have their information in my database.
